It’s episode 3 of Hard Earned. Hard Earned is a documentary series that puts aside economic debates and follows five families around the country to find out what it takes to get by on $8, $10 or $15 an hour. The series turns an intimate lens on this group of 21st century American dreamers as they fight against all odds to thrive when it takes everything they have to simply survive.

here is the thing. (now I am an Australian) so. that being said we get more money. but guess what. we pay more for rent food fuel/ (well except eggs I guess) but yeah it is pretty expensive. and the more a business has to pay and gets taxed the less workers they get. (they invest in alot of things like robots and self serve) if govt cared. (which they don't) they would outlaw things like self serve like at mickies. and grocery stores. (and they would banned robots like robot fork lifts etc) and instead hire people. they should actually tax a little less if they do. and tax real high if they do. they also need to make less taxes like pay roll etc. and put min wage down etc.

My ring was $20 at Kohl's, my husband's was $40 on ebay. We spent so little because buying our first home was more important. A ring is just a ring, honestly we're happy with our cheap rings. This is the story of so many people. Yes some responsibility falls on the people for choices they've made, but the system is also not making things easier. It's a small group at the top who are trying to keep things to stay the same while their money keeps going up. The one woman said something that I think is a huge fear of a lot of people. It's the whole stepping outside your comfort zone to try and improve your situation. It's easy to get complacent and comfortable. We all have those moments. I did notice a lot of the people featured live in cities with a high cost of living. Would like to have seen people from more around the country. I know so many people who go into crazy debt for a engagement/wedding. It's all about impressing other people. Wonder why the wedding industry is a billion dollar industry. My wedding was simple and people granted a lot of favors. The money we saved was used for home improvement and travel.

My fiance gave me a beautiful ring for under $1k, we're planning to have our wedding in a park or the backyard of the home we plan to buy this year, and we make combined almost 3x what that couple makes. People really need to get their priorities straight and live within their means.
@JustAGrl007 Жыл бұрын
Just because someone wants more than you doesn't mean their priorities are not always straight. Everyone doesn't want to settle on everything. I make double/triple alone what most of these couples makes and already own my home. But I'm not judging because I've also been here before.

I love the idea of doing this then throwing a reception bash for friends and family as an anniversary celebration down the line. Also, having a ring in mind (the one you may really want) as an anniversary gift at 5 or 10 year anniversary. Living in San Diego minimum wage is $15.50, working full time thats about $2,000 after taxes Rent is around $1,900 You need to me 2.5-3x in your income to rent. If you’re a single person and have absolutely no one else to lean on how do you do that A mortgage is around $3,000 Impossible to save a downpayment Working 2 jobs is an option but why should one have to work 80 hours just to pay their bills and no money left for anything else… the point of life is to live it.

I guess wedding rings are a very cultural thing, because it's not a big deal where I grew up. My parents told me they sold their wedding rings decades ago to make the down payment for a house. As long as I can remember, they've never worn wedding rings, but they've been together now for 37 years.

The $3,000 wedding was fantastic. They had their family and friends with them for one of the greatest moments in their life. I'm depressed that 60%+ will end in divorce. Finanancial stress and the proliferation of social media has had an incredibly destructive effect on the family unit.

Thank you for this excellent documentary ! I used to work at Walmart. My store was great, but the wage was impossible to live off of! I made $9 per hour and only got 30 hours work per week. I moved back to Sweden again. I got sick and I’m on benefits, which is about 1000usd per month. Not much to live off, especially in an expensive country. I’m not complaining though, I have almost free healthcare. It was super tough making it in the US, I wish it was a less elitist country! I loved the people there and the beautiful nature. @@extendedpinky Thank you. I´m now thinking to go to Switzerland or Luxembourg. Maybe i could go to the US only to visit or to get a girlfriend but from the things i saw about the US it´s not a pretty country for someone poor or in the middle class specially for an immigrant that is alone without knowing nobody. The quality and the price of the food, gas and the rents are very high and that together with the high taxes it´s not appealing at the moment for me. Since i was little i always wanted to go to the US, but the US from today is completely different from the US from the 80´s. Even the culture has changed and each year are more divorces than successful marriages. I guess there are 2 US. The US that belongs to the rich and the US that belongs to the poor. In the US maybe i could get as an engineer/ computer programmer, a slave job in the Mcdonalds to start my new life but i think i would not be able to save money in the end of the month. I applied for the lottery visa so i will be waiting for the result. Usually this type of visa is only for poor African countries or for the Latin American countries, not for Europe.
