Navy Chief who just commissioned today as an LDO. (Surface Operations). Jake is telling you the cold, hard truth. You guys have NO IDEA how difficult commissioning in service as an enlisted guy is. If you already have the degree, just join via the officer route. These programs are incredibly competitive and are quota controlled. All the OS, STG, CTT, and QM E6's-E8's are applying. When i got picked up, only 12 slots were filled for FY 24 out of the whole damn Navy. You can be a rock star and still not get selected (I know plenty of em). Im not against enlisting at all. Hell, i loved being a Chief. But if you ALREADY HAVE A DEGREE and are thinking about joining the service. Go the Officer route. Period. That "well, i can always drop a package while I'm in" fall back plan....ok, man, good luck.

whats up man @reidtatusko7970. I'm pretty much at the same spot in life as you rn (graduate decemeber, have plans to go OCS then Ranger/SF). I also had to face the touch decision of OCS vs Enlisted. Ultimately after much research (like this video) and soul searching, I decided that the officer route was the best one for me and my future. I definetly reccomend reading "Ruck Up or Shut Up" by David Walton. Its the most comprehensive guide to SFAS regarding everything from the culture and lifestlye, to team week and how to specifically prepare. Its written by a retired green beret officer who studied SFAS for the past decade.

Here's the Infantry Officer timeline to SF or Regiment as College Op OCS.....Basic Training 9 weeks, TDY to Benning a few weeks to wait for OCS class start, 12 weeks OCS, wait a week or two for IOBC or whatever it's called now, 16 weeks IOBC, wait a week or two for Airborne, 3 weeks five jump chump, wait a few weeks for Ranger School, 61 or up to God knows how many days (took me over 61).....ship to your first duty location - pray you get a good Platoon Sergeant....do your PL time, usually 12 -18 months, put in a Ranger packet and hope to get picked up for RASP2....or if you want to go SF put in selection packet as a 1LT and go to selection, if you pass you go to the career course as an O3 and then attend the Q Course after the career course.

My honest take; I think this guy would be much happier continuing his life as a civilian instead of in the military. Maybe I’m wrong, but I had a very similar personality as this guy when I was younger, minus the mullet and mustache, and I had a very bad time in the navy with my sights set on becoming a SEAL. Too much BS in my short-lived military experience. Some of the best, yet most unsatisfying advice that I was given was “just play the game”, but I just couldn’t play that game. It wasn’t a game to me, and I didn’t want to “play a game”. I was very dissatisfied with the lies the BS that I ended up having to try to navigate only to end up getting discharged early. Maybe the army is different, I don’t know.

Army Street to Seat Warrant Officer Flight training is super competitive. Since it does not require a degree to be a WO1 & Rated Aviator. The Army gives zero points to the recruiters for the effort to process an individual for a Warrant or Commission package. I left the USMCR for Army flight school instead of pursuing a USMC Commission & Flight School because I was worried about my ears and eyes quitting. At Quantico Apparently they had heavy weapons training at the end of the basic school so people would show up Deaf at Pensacola. Heard of a few guys not passing the hearing test, it made me move over to the for Army WOC quickly. The USMC needs more infantry officers than aviators. Flight school is all work with all the academic demands, prepping every day for flight line, Army Crap & PT, etc. if you’re married, it’s zero time for a wife. Flying comes first & military flight training is a fire hose learning environment. In dealings with recruiters you have to push them to get what you want, flight school and officer programs scare recruiters away, you may have to shop for another recruiter. Military wide it’s now a 10 year Active service obligation after Winging, more than halfway to retirement with a lot of deployments under your belt. The best way to go to flight school is get a Guard or Reserve unit to sponsor you & control your clear by moving units if you need too. Reserve component flying units are great networking opportunities. Reserve components have the recruiters and they to do their own hiring. Retired CW3, USAR.
@jakezweig
@jakezweig 11 ай бұрын
did you end up going and flying in the ARmy?
@samuelcook7179
@samuelcook7179 11 ай бұрын
@@jakezweig Yes, I did fly & retired from USAR. As a Warrant Officer Candidate you were on SGT pay with Officer expenses in 1985 at Fort Rucker. The Married WOC’s we’re on food stamps & we were required to live in the barracks under a rigid OCS system, while learning to fly. My commissioned side of the class was heavy West Point, since I had a Fall class start after the 2LT’s had finished their Officer Basic Course before flight training. My first time to be exposed on a equal training level with Commissioned, since WOC’s were poor enlisted & my commission classmates had a pay for everything when we went out & study groups. The 2LT’s complained WOC’s were expensive. As new WO1 I got paid back with my Crew Chief, who like to eat on long cross country trips. The first Navy SEAL I ever saw was at Rucker, he was on medical hold for a heat stroke. Apparently he had been an E-6, moved over to the Army for flight school & tried to prove how tough he was to the TAC Officers during the six week harassment OCS course before Primary. The flight surgeon permanently grounded him, can’t have a heat stroke and fly. In Aviation you get put on medical hold you’re probably never fly again & processed out the military. SOF seems to have the same medical rules. In Army Aviation as WO you have a lot of autonomy as an Aircraft Commander, but you will sleep in Tents & deploy a lot. And will have sometimes complete idiots as your Command Structure making you play Army against your will when you want to be flying. Enjoyed your video.

If you don't have a mercenary attitude and realistic expectations for what the military is nowadays you're going to end up bitter and disappointed. Worst affected are the guys who joined 2011-2018ish. Right on the tail end of the constant combat deployments they were promised which statistically they ended up missing. And right as they get deep enough into their career to make NCO the culture wars started in earnest and now the whole organization is a different beast entirely from what they signed up for. You dudes REALLY need to think about what you are going to put yourself through, just so you can deploy to a random location to drink beer and lift.

Bro, this is the truth. Very well put. I joined in 2010 and wanted to deploy. By the time I finished training and put in a deployable status, they announced the drawdown in 2011-2012. Deployments came to a full stop and I missed the cutoff by literally a couple months for my career field. From that point, the military was starting to get more gay and politically correct. Got out in 2014 and don’t regret it. My sister joined this year and the culture war shit has gotten so much worse since the 10 years I’ve been out.

They don't have a reenlistment problem. They have a recruiting problem. E4 is the biggest rank in the Army. People getting in and out in the first contract is the norm and its expected. Nobody is saying if the E4s stayed the situation would change.

Hey Jake, informative video as always. I wanted to ask you about enlisting in the Army and getting a 4-year degree while serving in Infantry/Airborne, then going officer later in my career. Is that a good plan for someone pretty much out of high school with no degree? Thanks.

Best advice if you have no college is get to your first duty station, be a dude (run fast, ruck hard, shoot straight) then get your ranger slot. Come back after ranger and drop your Green to Gold Active Duty Option packet. The ranger school part is important because if you don’t have 2 years of college already, they’re going to board you for a 4-year option and you need something to stand out.

@Britton_Thompson Жыл бұрын
I'd imagine he'll say it's a worse choice than SEALs because it's just as difficult as BUDS, but there's even less positions to actually fill on a SWCC boat crew. You'll spend most of your time either on a crowded Navy ship with all the other depressed sailors or alongside the Coast Guard looking for possible drug smugglers. You'll most likely never actually receive a primo SOCOM assignment to insert and retrieve SEALs at any time in your career. There's really nothing for SWCC to do during peacetime but the day-to-day boring stuff. You'll spend your Navy career like everyone else doing the same training drills over and over again for average pay, with the downside of having no combat to tell your grandkids about someday

From the talks with my recruiter hes told me I can go enlisted 11B, get my degree then transfer to officer. I am interested in the Regiment and an option 40 contract. As a 11A My question is the following.. Which path would you recomend I take? Go in the army as enlisted ASAP and trust that Ill be granted the change from E to O? OR Focus no finishing my bachelors then joining as an officer? Thank You, hope to hear soon.

@@chrishernandez4640 the line units in regiment are basically the exact same in structure as regular army. You are still light infantry. There are differences, but a rifle platoon still lives inside of a rifle company. Get familiar with what an 11A does a PL in big army. If you have a degree and go to ocs, regardless of where you branch, you’re still a sir/ma’am from day 1. There’s no reason to go enlisted whatsoever. This is “peace time” army so being enlisted means a lot more time cleaning toilets than cleaning up a bad guys brain matter.

I think he is talking about being an officer in the Ranger Batt. All officers move around to different assignments in order to move up. You could go to Ranger Batt as a PL for a couple years and then have an opportunity to become a company commander with a unit at 10th Mountain (if there are no opportunities at Batt) or you could come over from a conventional unit as Captain and put in a few years at Battalion before moving up. Officers have to take commands at various assignments in order to be best positioned to make Colonel and then eventually have a shot at being a General.

@@parawill7074right on target bro. You have basically 15 minutes to be a pipe hitter as an officer in regiment and that’s a 1LT PL. Watershed moment after 1LT. If you are hitting captain and you still wanna “make that thang go bang” it’s basically SF selection, Virginia, or the Bearded Batt Boys. Other than that, gonna hop in and out of regular army and regiment
