To be fair, I never read that haki isn't part of swordsmanship, it was always about Conqueror Haki and how advanced Conqueror Haki may manipulate weather or be used as a fighting style itself towards the end. That they just turn haki off altogether would make no sense and I haven't seen anyone argue it. Whenever I see those Haki discussions it usually is only about advanced CoC and how it may be opening entirely different fighting styles by itself (which then comes in folks like Roger, Rayleigh and Shanks as presumed Conqueror Haki specialists).

I think a huge flaw of the arguments against Mihawk is the fact that people ignore that there is probably NOT an official "strongest swordsman commitee" in the world that gives out the title. It is simply something earned via recognition or maybe even sensational media like Luffys emperor title. Basically, if people accept you as the title holder, you are the title holder. And everyone, without any outliers, just accepts Mihawk as the one. What is my point? My point is that there is no such thing as techniques that would not be appropriate in a swordsfight. If Big Mom beat up Mihawk and she mostly used her devil fruit but she also used her sword, the world would see it as "The strongest swordsman was beaten!" and that's it. Simple as that. There is also no sort of haki technique that could ever exist that has no place in a swordsfight because the large majority of the world won't care and Mihawk would definitely not be a sore loser and start acting up like "Hey that's unfair! No haki spirit bombs allowed in a swordsfight! :( " If Mihawk lost to Shanks with Shanks using some super haki that has nothing to do with swordfighting, Shanks gets the title because he still beat Mihawk in a fight while using a sword. The population won't care about the technicalities. That is very important. The people of the One Piece world won't go into the technicalities and semantics. They will simply take it as "Mihawk was beaten in a swordsfight." and thats it! So my point is, I also dislike the simplistic argument of "Mihawk must beat anyone that is holding a sword." just because that is too simple to explain the issue. The real argument here is that Mihawk should be able to beat people that use swords in conjunction with other OP abilities simply because the people of the world would not accept his title anymore if he was beaten, no matter if Big Mom used Zeus. She still beat him. So yeah, Mihawk needs to be capable to beat those kinds of people for his title to actually be serious business. Or else Mihawk just has the title because he was lucky enough to never fight Big Mom. I hope you understand my point here cause I am using the exact same logic you used. If Big Mom beat Mihawk in a fight using her sword, the world won't care about the details and Big Mom now has the title. There is noone to enforce the "rules of a swordsfight" in One Piece so there are no rules beyond using a sword in a fight. So yeah, i actually believe Mihawk has to be stronger than any given person using swordsmanship in conjunction with other op stuff or else his title would only be his because he was lucky enough to never face Big Mom and he would really be a fraud. But since he is Zoros dream, there is no way he is a fraud. So his title must be 100% foolproof legit, meaning there is no eventuality under which someone could snag his title. Meaning Big Mom could not just kill him and then claim the title, telling the world she used her sword and the world has no way to disprove her since her sword is a prominent part of her fighting anyways. I think I made my point very clear, but feel free to argue even though I think there is nothnig to argue here unless you believe Mihawk to be a fraud.

Think about it. Mihawk is prideful enough to lose I terest in challenging Shanks since he lost his arm, as winning would mean nothing. Yeah Shanks and Mihawk are probably roughly equally strong, at least close enough that non-all out fights won't give a decisive outcome, and since Mihawk is all about swords he's been labeled as the strongest swordsman in the world, while Shanks, who probably mixes swordfighting with other stuff, is just known to be extremely strong, just not as a pure swordsman.

I never thought that Shanks was untouchable because of his fighting power. I always thought he held overwhelming political power through his connections due to having the world's highest level of practically applied charisma, with a really deep reach into the world's powers itself. Somewhat similar to Whitebeard, but more universal and with less direct enemies. To me it felt like that to other characters, that something crazy like 50%+ of the world politically is his ally and can agree with his stance(s), so you can't make him your enemy, especially if it would make you seem like "the bad guy" politically or narratively. He can stop Marineford, because anyone who says no is risking a lot of backlash and loss. Not to mention him and his crew are still quite strong to be there in person.

I place Mihawk as the WSS alongside Roger and Ryuma. If Shanks is as strong or stronger than Mihawk after losing is dominant arm, that would greatly diminish the narrative weight of his sacrifice for Luffy. That wouldn't even be a sacrifice, but an equivalent exchange for greater power. for him to have lost out on potential strength makes much more sense logically and narratively.

I don't see there being a problem with Mihawk being stronger than Shanks and one of the strongest in the verse. He doesn't have a crew and doesn't really act like other pirates. Mihawk likely has a code which forced him into fights with the marines and others but he generally seems like he just goes about his business sailing and challenging other swordsmen or accepting challenges but being as strong as he is most people just try to avoid him, much like you would a natural disaster. If Mihawk were to go against the marines or a Yonko crew he'd lose but 1v1 against a Yonko or Admiral he may well come out on top, and since he doesn't go around causing trouble he wouldn't have a Yonko level bounty but the name recognition is there.

At the start of the war, Mihawk wondered what was the distance between somebody like him and Whitebeard. People shit on him because Jozu came to block his attack, but that was the philosophical answer. Mihawk can't reach Whitebeard because he has countless loyal crew member ready to fight for him and get in the way. Later in the war, Mihawk see a similar ability in Luffy and call it the most terrifying power. Oda made a pretty good job at putting a spotlight on Mihawk's weakness and explaining why he's ultimately "weaker" than the Yonko. WSS isn't a competition and neither is world's greatest swimmer. It's a subjective title, with some objective facts. So, if Lebron beat Phelps in multiple different swims, multiple times then you could say Lebron is a better swimmer than Phelps even without the gold medals and competitions to back it. You would have a better point if we were talking about a world record then without officially clocking it in a sanctioned event then Lebron could never be the record holder and Phelps would still have the record.

Let's say Michael Phelps trained the same way he has in real life, but he stopped competing after high school. He wouldn't be an Olympic Gold Medalist, and he wouldn't be called the all-around greatest swimming athlete of all time. He would just be a guy who is really good at swimming, beats everyone he goes up against, but "who knows if he is or could have been the best? After all, he never competed for any titles." That's the idea here. That Shanks is like Michael Phelps if he had kept training the same way, but stopped competing in official competitions. He'll race against anyone who challenges him, but he won't do it for official titles or recognition. Shanks is clearly a globally recognized "competitor". Could he take the title? Yonko is likely a higher title than "Strongest Swordsman", so perhaps Shanks has no reason to duel when he has attained a higher pedigree.

Those arguments have nothing to do with each other. Morj stated that if Michael Phelps and LeBron James competed in a swimming contest that encompassed everything swimming has to offer than, if Lebron won, he should be considered the best swimmer because he beat Phelps in that specific duel no matter what his "main profession" may be = Shanks and Mihawk duel, the duel is purely sword-based, whoever wins is the strongest swordsman. Later, Morj picks the idea that twelve years ago Mihawk was stronger and got the title but Shanks became stronger with time and never came back for the titlte. Here he argues that this isn't the case and that Mihawk is still stronger than Shanks in a sword-based duel (mostly because it wouldn't make sense narratively for Shanks to be the actual strongest swordsman), he doesn't dismiss the notion that you must duel to earn the title. Mihawk beat and would most likely still beat Shanks in such a duel otherwise Zoro's goal would be hollow, that's his argument. This Zoro factor is how we know that, while not dueling since Shanks lost his arm, Mihawk still is the strongest swordsman

I think ppl overestimate shanks' power as an individual and underestimate the power of his crew. shanks could (and probably would) lose a 1v1 against kaido or mihawk, but the redhair pirates are the strongest out of all the yonko-crews, since ben beckman, yassop, lucky roo are much stronger than the sweet generals or the calamities. This is hinted at in ch. 957. So imo the redhair pirates are overall the strongest crew rn, which makes shanks as their captain the strongest yonko, but shanks is neither the strongest individual nor the strongest swordsman. Morj, what do you think about the possibility of advanced conquerer’s being some form of weather manipulation? I think Roger’s battle vs Shiki is a strong hint towards this. Some other hints toward this could be how when Yonkos clash the skies split and it could also be Dragon’s true powers. Also back in East Blue, Mihawk visited Shanks on a random island to tell him about Luffy’s first bounty. At first, the skies were cloudy and dark and Shanks was in a bad mood. When he found out about Luffy’s bounty, he got happy and the sun came out. In general, controlling the weather really goes along with the idea of being a king or a conquerer. Started off great then went down the rabbit hole. 1. Swordsman by definition is anyone who welds a sword. If you pick up a sword to fight seriously yes you are a swordsman. Only the op fandom so seriously debates what a swordsman is because their favorite character or character they prefer doesn't have the WSS title but a laid back dude that barely acts does. Extra abilities doesn't stop you from being swordsmen. Kaku who uses df, martial arts and swordsmanship is still a swordsman. Why? Because he picked up a sword and decided to make it a main part of his fighting style even tho he was a more than capable martial artist. 2. Connor v mayweather is a dumb argument for op because sword fights in op have always been overall ability vs overall ability. So no it's not like swordsmen in op hold themselves back from using abilities then once some rule gets lifted they can then fight a full ability. No swordsman in op always are allowed to use full abilities. Zoro vs ohm where ohm used a cloud dial and a dog to fight yet he was a swordsman in op fighting zoro a swordman. 3. It doesn't matter if haki doesn't have something to do with haki. Brook uses ice and soul powers to fight. Cabaji used spinning tops, a bicycle, fire and swordsmanship to fight. This idea that shanks somehow will get something more he can use outside of swordsmanship so can be stronger is dumb. How can you read op and say this when just reading this post i've used 4 cannon characters that used abilities other than swordsmanship yet are swordsman. 4. Again with the extra abilities? Why can shanks get these abilities but mihawk the WSS just can't? Why can't mihawk have this super advance haki that shanks magically may have? This argument is the worst cuz you specifically think up something shanks can have solely so shanks can be stronger yet don't do it for mihawk. No mihawk is a simple swordsman with basic haki. I can generally accept all of Morj’s arguments, however I will say as a separate issue that shanks haki is probably better than Mihawks, and Mihawks swordsmanship is probably better than shanks even before losing an arm. That said, I do wonder if oda himself even understands this own power scaling in this regard. What does it really mean to be a swordsman in one piece? And how does being the strongest at swordsmanship specifically play out when there’s other forms of combat that are utilized in this verse? And how does this play out in a situation where you also have a character like shanks, whom is only ever portrayed to engage in combat with a sword but is also supposed to be stronger than Mihawk because of the narrative. Oda could’ve literally avoided this confusion by making shanks fight the same way Garp does. Then there’s no question that mihawk is a better swordsman because shanks wouldn’t even use a sword. We literally could have a situation where shanks haki is so fucking powerful, he essentially grows an arm of haki and uses it to fight. I doubt anyone would question he has the best haki then.

Mihawk is stronger than Shanks. It's not even a debate at this stage - and I prefer Shanks. The Warlords were created by the Admiralty in order to balance the powers of one side against the Four Emperors, which until Luffy and the Strawhats came along and started dismantling the institution, this worked, and the Emperors had been locked in a 'cold war stalemate' against the Admirals and the Warlords, which means some aspects of the Warlords stopped the Emperors from making moves. Mihawk was absolutely one of those Warlords. Some facts: Mihawk walked alone into Shank's Camp, no back up, and ready to throw down in a fight in the presence of Shanks, Beckman, and others. Mihawk took a swipe at Whitebeard with no fear of repercussion or worry about what might come back at him. It was a simple, lazy swipe of his hand and it took Jozu, an admiral level commander to stop it with all of his efforts. Another swipe in Marineford demolished an Admiral's Ice-wall like it was wet tissue paper. He didn't run from Shanks, he just respects Shanks too much and at that stage had begun to see the merit of Luffy's power that he simply decided the fight to protect Marineford wasn't worth it. So far, the strongest people in the One Piece World have been marked as such, The Worlds Strongest Man (Whitebeard), The Worlds Strongest Swordsman (Mihawk), The Worlds Strongest Beast (Kaido), are arguably the three strongest beings in One Piece, hands down, and probably in that particular order. Raleigh is a Swordsman - which means Mihawk is stronger than Raleigh, and Raleigh is considered 'The Dark King', the Shadow of the Pirate King, the one man who could/could have threatened Roger's status as Pirate King but instead chose to live in his Shadow. Raleigh = Whitebeard = Garp, and if Raleigh, Whitebeard and Garp are in the same bracket, that means Mihawk being stronger than Raleigh means that he may even be Pirate King level material - which makes sense, given that if Zoro has to surpass Mihawk, by virtue/proxy, Luffy does too in order to become Pirate King.

saying mihawk is pirate king level is a stretch. also, thats not what the title "dark king" means at all. rogers rival was whitebeard (or rocks), not rayleigh. whitebeard would destroy rayleigh and he would have destroyed mihawk too. saying that mihawk is pirate king level would mean that by the end, after zoro beats mihawk, he could be pirate king, just as luffy which is just dumb.

I think where people get hung up is that there is very little, to nothing in terms of visual evidence that has shown Mihawk to not only be stronger than the Yonkou in terms of swordplay, but also the Marines, other than his title. Even something as little as clashing with Whitebeard or an Admiral or even a flashback with some of his feats (since Oda's clearly waiting to show him fighting Shanks) would have gone a long way I think

This is a Shounen. It's simple. Whoever has named attacks with a sword is a swordsman. Whoever uses it as a primary weapon is a swordsman. Kaku used kicks yet he called himself a swordsman but Big Mom uses a sword an punches yet does not call herself one so we automatically disqualify her as being such? It seems like a stupid argument to have. Roger, Shanks, Mihawk, Oden, Scabbards, Rayleigh, Big Mom, Law, Hawkins even Whitebeard is a swordsman because his blade is a Supreme Grade one. There's no debate to be had here.

100% agree with you based off everything that’s been said. Apologies if I’ve misunderstood something, but the most important point that seems to not be mentioned is that theoretically there may well and truly be a stronger swordsmans than Mihawk at any point in the story. *However* until that person decides to fight and beat Mihawk, the title will stay with Mihawk. So the issue here is that we don’t know whether that person is stronger than Mihawk until they beat Mihawk. And I feel this may be the argument with Shanks now where the story is currently. He *maybe* could beat mihawk now in a sword fight, but until that happens, Mihawk is indeed the strongest swordsman.

This to me is basically going against the author. Zoros dream is to become the strongest swordsman by defeating Mihawk who is known as the strongest which has been established by Oda himself thus saying for example Shanks could defeat him but doesnt want the title is basically saying Zoros dream in the end will be empty since he doesnt know there is a stronger swordsman. Unless Oda establishes that Mihawks title is not absolute that its just what people think of him it was given to him there is no reason to against it

There could very well be someone stronger than mihawk. *BUT* until that person fights mihawk, we won’t know whether that is the case or not (so theoretically there may be someone stronger, or there may not be). So the point with current shanks is that he *may* be stronger than Mihawk, but again until he actually beats Mihawk in a 1v1, we won’t ever know.

Other than that Oda has stated that there is no swordsman alive or hidden stronger than Mihawk and its of course because he wants there to be no doubt about Zoros dream. It wouldnt make any sense that Zoro has basically been trying to reach that top where Mihawk is waiting for him at just to somehow show Zoro that it has been a lie all the time or when he defeats him have some secret swordsman come out of nowhere who has always been stronger

@@HazzyDevil So the problem for me is some people think about the WSS as just a title and not that he is the strongest in actuality but Oda himself has established he is the WSS in NAME and ACTUALITY that means he has no worthy challenge anymore which is the reason he is waiting for someone mainly Zoro now. Thats what Mihawks character is about reaching a point he became bored because no one was worthy and the only rival he had lost his arm basically gave up their rivalry.

But again, *UNLESS* mihawk loses to this person (most likely zoro), we’ll continue to acknowledge him being the strongest. It’s not that hard to understand.

I think when people have the Mihawk vs Shanks discussion/debate they get carried away by powerscaling, headcannon and their personal desires/agendas so they forget the essence of how One Piece as a story has been fleshed out by Oda. At the end of the day what is most important is Zoro achieving his dream, how he goes about doing that is what the focus should be on.

It doesn't matter what abilities someone has outside of swordsmanship. Oda showed in ch 16 that no abilities a swordsman possesses can exclude them from being a swordsman. Whether it's haki or a devil fruit. Projectiles or elemental breath attacks. They're still swordsman. The only exception are those who cannot distinguish between what they want to cut, and what they do not want to cut, characters such as Big Mom. Because, as Mihawk says, without subtlety a sword is but an iron bar.
