My dad used to take the dinty Moore beef stew, add an extra can of mixed veggies and serve over rice. It would feed me, my mom and him for dinner. It even has a recipe for Shepards pie on the back. Great video and great timing. I just bought a bunch of canned soup that was on clearance so now I can stretch it even further.

My mom did something similar...this was in the mid 1960's...she'd open a can of Dinty Moore Beef Stew, dump it in her cast iron skillet and add a couple of diced raw potatoes, a diced large carrot, and add enough water to cook the veggies but not dilute the gravy..cooking it down evaporated the water..she'd add some salt and pepper for the extra veg and on the side she'd serve a 10 cent can of applesauce which she sprinkled with cinnamon and she'd put a stick of margarine on a plate (b/c it was cheaper than butter) with some slices of white bread which was around 25 cents a loaf back then..that would feed her, my grandmother, my brother who was 7 and myself who was 14. Mama knew how to stretch a dollar b/c she had to...she waited tables working for $1.50 an hour plus tips to support us..she got no child support and there was no welfare back then and she was too proud to go to the gov't surplus food band..I learned to 'use it up, wear it out, make it do, do without" and I'm so glad I did after living through the 70's, late 80's when a fixed mortgage interest rate was 15% and the current horrendous inflation...when people moan about the 7% interest rate I laugh b/c when we got a 7% rate in 1993 we were thrilled..never ever thought we'd see the 2.99% rate we gotl in 2021... Of course houses weren't as expensive back then...we had $62 thousand in a new home and 11 acres of prime farm land with a LOT of road frontage... but wages weren't as high either. In spite of all the financial ups and downs over the years we've been able to save a lot of money b/c of our frugality...when money market interest rates were paying 10% interest and passbook savings was paying 7% in the late 80's we didn't have much cash ...I keep wondering when we are going to see those rates again ...the best I've seen locally is 5.5% on a 10 month CD..

Rebecca, I have been following your KZbin channel for several months now and keep planning to comment but haven't until now. To say I appreciate you and your content would be an understatement. I am in awe!! The additions to regular soup is amazing! I was raised to cook and bake by my Mom when I was 7 and had to stand on a chair. Everything from scratch. I've been a single working mom and now I am a retired senior trying to stretch my social security check to cover everything. Yes, I swallowed all my pride (false?) and use services as available. I get food stamps - $23./month - not a typo. I just did the math and I have a list of 18 items from Dollar Tree and now I want to put together a menu plan. Starting now with this current soup plus idea. Blessings to you BTW I am 88 and live on my own and just signed up with our Food Bank. No shame in the game!!

You should check out Southern Frugal Momma, she has a lot of tips and recipes like this that are immensely helpful and tasty as well. I bounce back and forth between these two to help me simplify meals and use what I have on hand to eat happily and plentiful. I also really like Frugal Fit Mom, she taught me how to make my own no knead bread with only a few simple ingredients that are immensely cheap, without a Dutch oven or anything fancy. Thank God for youtube right now! I never learned how to cook, for some reason my family never taught me to, so I have these lovely ladies to help!

I'm a retired firefighter. Many years ago, I worked with a guy who had served in the Vietnam war. Whenever we cooked biscuits, he had to leave the kitchen when we opened the container. The "pop" the container made when opening reminded him of an initial sound from some type of munition. He suffered from PTSD before we really knew what it was. Thanks for these videos.

Barley can be cooked in the microwave and added to any soup. It's really good and it's filling. It's especially good with that beef pot roast. Can also add leftover vegetables. Baked potatoes can be cut up and added in. The cheddar broccoli soup is good over baked potatoes or topped with instant mashed potatoes. I'm a lover of soup both as soup and as a meal.

In all my years I have never thought to put rice or noodles with the canned soup! I actually do not mind the tomato based soups but was never a big fan of cream sauces/soups....still am not but my son did find a dish that he made that is true pasta alfredo. Luckily for me I am blessed to be able to not have to struggle with food now that I am an empty nester and it's just me (well..now my son is back home). But for those of you who are struggling with a family, I have been there with a family of 5 and both parents unemployed so I get it. And with the prices these days....well...you know. I still look for the best prices (drives my son nuts) for all things. I almost never pay full price if I don't have to. It just takes a bit of creativity like these meals to survive and feel full. Thank you for sharing and always giving an honest review of your concoctions.

Thank you for sharing! That makes me happy because I thought that even if the idea of this video would be considered common practice, there is always someone out there who may need the information so it’s always worth sharing. I for one never ate canned soup as anything but canned soup and someone turned me onto the idea of eating it over rice or potatoes and it’s been such a game changer. Especially when I need quick meals that are small portions just for myself and don’t want to eat leftovers for days 🥰

Great idea using rice to bulk up a can soup. Soup over backed potatoes.... you've given me some great inexpensive meals. When we were young, 5 kids, my Mom used to make soup, homemade or can, and cut in quarters, pieces of canned biscuits. To use as dumplings in the soup. We loved it ❤

Love this! You can also buy those $1-2 bags of frozen vegetables while you're at the same store, then match what makes sense to the soups to bulk them up. Any cream based soup tastes great with those "california blend" vegetables that have broccoli, carrots and cauliflower. The more tomatoy soups are great with potatoes, onions, peppers.

You are amazing! You got me with the soup rice and all the others! This is a game changer for me. I'm so sick of the same thing over and over. You are really good on camera by the way. Thank You so much for doing all the testing on these soups. Easy peasy and good! God Bless. Hugs,Rebekah

When my kids were younger I would make cornbread and thicken beef vegetables soup with a little flour and have a really good beef stew, the kids loved it. And filled them up!

My Mom made something similar in the 50's & 60's. She was a single Mom who worked 3-4 jobs at a time with 4 kids & didn't have much money. She would use white sandwich bread in her muffins tins & made chunk light tuna, with cream of mushrooms soup paprika on top and would bake them in the oven and we'd have that on Friday nights. If it was really cold outside we'd have chicken noodles/ rice for something warm for breakfast, before we walked to school in New England. A lot of what you do in your videos She did. I did (3-4 jobs) after my divorce and still do in 70's for myself to get by. I like your videos.

Just a tip: for your soup cupcakes, you can use the layer biscuits and split them in half and press into your muffin tins and fill them up with goodness, turns 8 soup cupcakes into 16, making each one less "bready".

I really love these ideas. It's perfect for the type of meals I have taught my preteens and teens to make. A few simple cooking techniques, very inexpensive, but a big payout on taste!

I love these recipes! I'm a newer viewer I subscribed a few weeks ago I am so glad I found your channel! I love your videos for inexpensive meals and meal prep! We are limited with choices due to budget and only one vehicle so a lot of times we walk to the store which is not far from us but only stores close by are dollar tree and DG. We buy half our groceries at DT and half at food lion. Our DT recently just got all the plus freezer foods I was so excited for that! I am definitely gonna try the chicken pot pie biscuit/muffins they looked so good! Thank you for making these videos for options on a tight budget! One thing that is hard is sometimes you end up eating a lot of the same things in the week. I love the creative options so you don't get bored!

Wow!!! once again BRILLIANT. I find that turning the potato over half way through baking in the microwave cooks it more evenly...I use the potato function on my microwave usually put in 1 potato, flip them over, repeat, until they are baked to my liking.

LOVE these ideas ! while I need to watch my salt intake ( have high blood pressure ) it's not like I would be eating it every day lol. I am not a big fan of canned soup either so I really appreciate your take on using them in a different way ! and lord knows with the price of food STILL increasing and the hubby and I being on a limited income your price point is amazing 💞 appreciate you so much !!!!!!!!!!!!

Also, If you have an air fryer you can make baked potatoes in it. Clean and pierce potatoes several times with a fork and pop them in the air fryer basket (i can usually fit 4-5) and I do it at 320 degrees for 30 minutes and they are perfect.

My mother served us lots of casseroles made with pasta and various meats and veggies and then sauced with condensed soups. My favorite was egg noodles with chopped broccoli, cubed ham, and condensed cheese soup. Cook the noodles and mix together in a casserole dish and bake. My mom used leftover ham from a previous dinner, but you could cut buy a ham steak or use a can of SPAM.
