GAME SPEED NORMAL!!! This has made a huge difference in my enjoyment of this game! I used to play on fast. I was expanding just as quickly as I was exploring the map. By turn 90 the game was just about wrapping up. I am now playing on normal game speed and at turn 80 in about the same time it would take to get to 30 in fast. Lots of time to explore map and complete quests!

It was confusing to me at first but I just played a few games and then it all sort of started to make sense after a while, just take the time to read what everything does, maybe look up some tips on the internet, I'm sure there are some good sources out there, Ive just never checked myself
@272arshan8 жыл бұрын
in addition to tutorials, what I do is just jump in and lose until I learn. It's more effective the less complex a game is, obviously, but this one wasn't so bad- I did this with CK2, now *that* was a nightmare. The thing is you don't really lose anything.

Well Lewis, I'm pretty sure that the Wind Waker thing is from The Legend of Zelda: The Windwaker, a series done by Martyn. That's the only wide spread use of the word excluding the weapon in Hyrule Warriors.
@TheSonsofSigmar9 жыл бұрын
Two things to look at are: First is Anomaly Odds under world difficulty. (More anomalies make things faster, some ease city/empire growing pains, and there flavor text is awesome. They also place either more or less emphasis on your city placement based on how spread out they are.) Second, in generation presets there is the Scattered map type. Everyone starts on their own 2-3 region island with no strategic resource it forces everyone to race for boats. (One problem is that with the new Tasks and minor wonders added in the expansion it makes Roving Clans early market access super powerful, since they aren't reliant on quests to get Titanium or G.Steel.)

Personally I kinda like longer games when it comes to strategy so don't think that's a downside - though I also don't play grand-strategy games as multiplayer. It wouldn't make sense to me - 'fast' is almost by definition tactical. FPS games, quick-tactics like Dawn of War and Starcraft. Grand Strategy is supposed to be... well, 'Grand'. I want a story that will grow for days or weeks, a quest like that will keep going and that I can dream about in between games. I think all the long.. repeated.. over and over.. negativity against this being an actual 'grand strategy' game kinda has me sold, I'll grab it tonight! :D

What Dave said around 5:20 about Faction difficulty and how players can be practically knocked out of the running because of them is something I wish the Yogs would pick up on when they do future Endless Legend / Civ games. I want to watch five human beings pit themselves against each other in these games, rather than watch five people individually deal with Factions/Barbarians. Also, a lack of Barbarians (as seen in that Datlof live streamed game) means everyone is on much more equal footing further into the game, rather than a clear winner emerging by the end of the early game. These multiplayer turn-based strategy series are fantastic, but they can get a bit formulaic, and one way to rectify that would be to turn down the difficulty of factions/barbs - if not off completely - because they really polarise who is doing well and who is not and make the whole game a little bit more predictable.

So, in my first game, I knew literally nothing, so I picked the Ardent Mages because they have a cool picture and I didn't bother looking at race abilities. I chose to focus on science because that's really effective and important in Civ 5, so I thought it might carry over. As it turns out, I accidentally chose to play to my strength. I wish they'd explained a bit more about the Cultists. In the same game, my fiancé chose to play them, and he's terribly confused.
@gammafighter8 жыл бұрын
+bombshellblonde544 Unfortunately, part of the trade-off of having a deep and complex game is a steep learning curve. I haven't played much EL in the year since I bought it, but I've recently been watching youtube guides and now i'm hooked. I just leave the videos running while i'm doing dishes or folding laundry and get hyped to play again with a whole new appreciation.

Hey I'm new to this game and the only other 4x game I've played is Civ5. How important is "approval"? Is it different for each city, or is it the same across your empire? Is it like happiness in Civ5, where it's arguably the most important resource, since an unhappy civ cripples all the others (science, gold, production)? And how important is "influence"? What all does it do? Lastly, is there any reason not to expand? Is it the more regions you take the better? I assume you don't want to expand too fast due to things like "approval"? But do you want to take as much land as possible overall always? PS. you call them "Wind Wakers" because you're a Zelda fan? I dunno, because Link also wears green? lol
@Pikachu7908 жыл бұрын
This is extremely late, but hey, still better to get an answer lol. Your "approval" rating is like Happiness in civilization, where you have to balance out your expansion disapproval with the approval rating generated by buildings in your empire, along with trying to level districts up to level 2 to get rid of that disapproval as well. Basically, it is a check in place to make sure you don't expand too quickly. As for Influence, it's used for 2 things; Empire Plans and Diplomatic actions. Empire plans are where they're mostly spent on, since they give bonuses for quite a few turns after you set them, but they also get more expensive the more you expand. Diplomatic actions are just that, diplomatic actions. You have to have enough influence to be at peace with someone (along with the requisite research of course), as well as doing various other things. It's important for all factions really, just some of them can generate it better than others (Drakken and Cultists, though the latter is because they need influence so they just make their workers generate fucktons of influence to fuel the conversions.) As for needing to expand, it's usually best to take into account if you can handle the expansion. Early on, you can't expand too fast since you can't build many buildings for approval generation, but later on, you get technologies that gives both approval buildings and reduced expansion disapproval, up to 50% with the technology in Era 5. However, again, it's all up to you since you can still build tall (heck, some factions can't expand easily or at all, so they build tall out of necessity). Sorry for lack of paragraphs, google likes to think my Enter keypresses don't make paragraphs.

By the looks of it, there's not going to be any Guardians DLC in these Guide videos, which is a shame, because the way that you play it ends up being different, especially for Vaulters and Cultists, and to a lesser extent the Wild Walkers

SithBowman Yeah, they said in the first Guardians DLC video that they recorded these before the DLC was released, which is a shame.
@SithBowman9 жыл бұрын
Dave Fayram Although having the videos that way around did inspire me to play as the Vaulters using the Guardians DLC, and got all the Guardians up and running by turn 140 (Normal speed on Normal diff.), kinda helped by the fact that my starting area had Titanium and Glassteel and got all the wonder districts from Eras 1, 2 and 3 (even though I was against 2 Wild Walker factions). Note: The Water Guardian is OP, Equipping it with a free counter and the weapon that allows a charge ability which increases damage if moved and by how much (combined with +4 movement on units policy), meant that the water guardian had a damage of around 270-300 raising to over 500 with full movement charge, meaning any Non-Capital could be taken out easily due to the way it attacks (in a wave, as long as enemies are next to eachother) and completely clears all fortification bonuses if you didn't siege the city.
@KirinDave9 жыл бұрын
SithBowman Yeah the water guardian is designed to kill cities without a siege. It's amazing. Hard party is getting it to the enemy city.
@SithBowman9 жыл бұрын
Dave Fayram That's part of the reason why I opted for the +4 Movement empire plan, It gives it a movement of 10, and the reduced movement cost for rivers helps a little bit (unless your against Drakken who constantly close borders and stop wars)

In my experience in this game, initiative is the be all and end all. Since a unit essentially loses its action if it is attacked first (and typically cannot use its ability, e.g. Beam if they counterattack), the fastest-acting units dictate combat. I had a super strong army, but it was made absolutely worthless when I faced a friend who had faster, weaker units, simply because his could dictate who fought who (favourable matchups), and his actually got to use their special abilities as a result. This game could be great, but the combat is cripplingly bad, and means I never want to play it again, and have no investment in these videos either :(
@SRaitsa9 жыл бұрын
Count Lieberkuhn Telsem Warlocks care not for your initiative.
@AndreasWinkler839 жыл бұрын
So wrong.
@midastheunwise24239 жыл бұрын
Andreas Winkler At least tell me how I'm wrong then? Because combat is single-handedly ruining this game for me, and I'd rather it didn't.
@KirinDave9 жыл бұрын
Count Lieberkuhn There are a few ways its wrong. In the case of Telsem warlocks, once the AMs get Stun that happens outside of initiative and you aren't moving. Secondly, in many cases the deployer of a slower and defensive army can recognize this and deploy carefully around their reinforcement points. If you haven't SPECIFICALLY prepared with a _____ Slayer for that unit, odds are it's bad. But early on in the game's development that was absolutely true. That's why ranged damage got so massively nerfed.
@midastheunwise24239 жыл бұрын
How does one get to swarm reinforcement points with counter units then? I have found that units such as the Urces are easily wrapped up with faster units before they have a chance to move in close enough (or at all) in order to lock down reinforcements, assuming equal numbers. Keep in mind this is entirely based on multiplayer experience, but I personally find that rocking defensive armies and then having the enemy dictate combat enough for my tactical decisions not to feel meaningful is frustrating. I get that I can fight fire with fire here, but I don't think my personal playstyle (defensive, reactionary) is particularly well-catered to, at least from my personal experience. I am also notoriously unlucky when it comes to RNG elements in games, but that is not the fault of the game :p
