"Endless Love": A Tribute to the 1981 Film Starring Brooke Shields (with Tom Cruise in his 1st role)

At the height of her popularity just after "The Blue Lagoon", Brooke Shields starred in "Endless Love", an adaptation of Scott Spencer's best selling novel of the same name. Directed by Franco Zefferelli ("Romeo & Juliet"), the film was poised to be a huge success. Unfortunately it was only moderately successful and remains unreleased on DVD in the U.S.. The story of a 17 year old man (Martin Hewitt) in love with a 15 year old (Brook Shields) is quite powerful and though many who loved the book did not like this film version, everyone else (sans critics) love it! The theme song from the film sung by Lionel Richie & Diana Ross was (and still is), one of the biggest hits ever produced. Tom Cruise, James Spader & Ian Ziering all made their major motion picture debuts in the film as well (and all 3 can be seen in this tribute). I hope you enjoy it!

I saw this original movie back in July, 1981 when it was first released. I was only 13 years old at the time and I have to say even to this day, this movie and this song have to be my favorites. It's so beautifully made and choreographed. I still remember a lady next to me crying at 8:54 when I was watching this movie in the theater. Life was so much simpler and way better back then without all this insane and disruptive IT and social media. I really miss the old days. BTW, I watched it in Metairie, LA at the Lakeside shopping movie theater but I have heard it was demolished and something else was built!! Did anybody watch it there back in the summer of 1981?? My junior year of high school (1981) I was in the throes of first love. "Endless Love" was the first movie we ever saw together and the song was also "our" song. He even signed my yearbook "your endless love." He died three years after we got out of school. The movie and the song ALWAYS takes me back to that precious and special time in my life. why would they keep remaking movies? The remakes never do that well. There is a reason why a movie would do well in 1981, and not in 2015. They are different eras and different ways of thinking. This movie would be a little too romantic and all that for 2015 standards.

I sang the title song for the opening scene in this clip. It was the beginning of my career here in Los Angeles. I thought it would be a big break for me then, but unfortunately I was never given screen credit for my song version; and it was removed from the soundtrack record just before the record released. Every song in the film is on the soundtrack record except mine. It really seemed like my manager didn't have my back so I was left out of everything. One of the saddest things about not getting credit for my song was that it was a featured moment, which you'll see if you watched the clip. However, and most upsetting, some of the credits were given to people with roles such as; Ron Perkins - Patient Gilbert Stafford - Attendant Marvin Foster- Attendant Walt Gorney - Passerby Willie Wenger - Waitress Robert Altman - Hotel Manager Ruth Last - Hotel Resident...etc...and I was omitted. When I read that someone got credit for being a Passerby, it really makes me see that this industry lacks in integrity and compassion for a persons talents and hard work. Needless to say it was very heartbreaking for me at the time but of course, I have moved on. Some of the cool things about being part of this film! As I was watching this tribute clip, I realized that there are a couple of great stars in the cast that are still going strong today. Tom Cruise, had his first speaking role in this film. James Spader, who had a major role, is still rockin' it starring in the 'The Blacklist'. Brooke Shields' career has been going strong non-stop. Another actor who played a role is Ian Ziering, who starred in Beverly Hills 90210, 'Sharknado 1 & 2' - now filming 'Sharknado 3', and was also one of the cast members this season on the 'Celebrity Apprentice'. Of course, the most obvious thing is that I worked with Lionel Richie, who wrote and produced my version of the song before the duet was recorded. These are some bullet points that make me smile! If you watched this tribute clip you probably noticed the actors that I mentioned.
