This expansion has sucked up my whole weekend. I was playing Lego with my son and I made a UC ship from Lego, with rotating turrets. All black with blue highlights. My son thought it was so cool. He's not quite ready to ES2, but soon enough. :)

Umbral Choir is a Lovecraftian nightmare, their "peace" involves total mind control and the destruction of identity. These intros are typically played from the faction's perspective, which is what's probably throwing you off - if you are some Lovecraftian entity older than the stars, how could you even begin to comprehend the existence of one life? Pioneer-9 is nothing to you, her corpse is just a useful puppet. And it's not like more alien = more peaceful is some general trend, either. The Cravers are by far the least peaceful and they're even more alien than the unfallen, the unfallen at least are sentient trees, while cravers are almost entirely inhuman machines with some biological components

They can turn any individual pop into an Umbral Shadow, most likely because there are no 'true born' in the Endless universe, everythign has been saturated (or poisoned, like the Umbral Choir would call it) by Dust.
