I'm way older than you, was US Army combat arms (POG) in the mid-80's. We had a West Point LT who asked anyone that wanted to join him in doing some real fitness training. The 1st Sgt let us go and we did all kinds of stuff, running included but also other exercises. I was the fittest of my entire life, knocked 2 minutes off my 2-mile run. We would put in a killer workout before the rest of the battery got back from their run. Fast forward to a new 1st Sgt. He had been a recruiter and other admin type positions, never had been in charge of a line unit. He decided in the interest of espirit de corp (a phrase I FUCKING hate to this day) we would all run TOGETHER. So back to plodding along for 5 miles or whatever going as fast as the fattest slowest fat fuck in the unit could run. One of the reasons my Army career ended with a single 4 year enlistment. Now at 62 I have a disabled wife and a destroyed shoulder. I'm not a couch potato but I do lament the fitness I'll never have again. Better to STAY in shape than GET in shape, and the older you get the worse it gets! Love your videos!

You are 100% right about the value of specific training. You were asking how running could possibly help you once you’re loaded down with gear in the field. One is mitochondrial density. Two is doing things that are more intense makes things at less intensity seem easier. It can increase plasma volume. Also, doing speed work allows you to work on your power(strength X speed.) Look up Flight Phase coaching. KPat coaches folks up on how to be good smokejumpers. Strength training and running and rucking aren’t mutually exclusive.

I was blessed at the 173rd, we did a variety of pt on a rotation - basic workouts, ruck day, body armor runs, combative etc... Then we (the fist) hit the gym at 1530 til 1700 and released directly from the gym.

Any sustained activity that elevates your heart rate will build endurance. However, if you're looking to built endurance in an activity, it's best to simply do that activity like a workout: with load and some sort of goal with a time expectation (sets completed, distance covered, floors climbed, logs split, lawn mowed, toddlers thrown into pool, etc)

I think there is a place for all of it. I like to ruck, run, lift, split wood, move wheelbarrow loads of dirt and gravel, swing sledgehammers and picks, and dig holes by hand since I can't afford machines to make my life easier. I lost 20 lbs this summer and didn't change a thing except the amout of activity I was doing.

There's nothing wrong with running. If you like running, run! Truth is, however, you need to train for what you're preparing for. Watch a football team at practice........ they run a bit, hit the weights a bit, but what they do a lot of is play football! So get your kit on and get your ass out there. It's easy to just grab a pistol and some 9mm and go to the flat range, but we all need to be out in full kit working on our draw, our movement, our team drills(find a team),etc....... so ride a bike, do jumping Jax, run, get out some richard Simmons VHS tapes or whatever you feel like, but at some point in your regimen, you need to put your gear on and train with it, learn how to use it and be proficient with it!

220-age is not a good way to estimate max HR. For that you need to wear a heart rate monitor and do sprints, or other high power output movements (e.g. fighting, heavy kettlebell swings, etc.).

@@JosephAllen-d2eWeightlifting probably does better than jogging (obviously I’m not talking about extremes). Just because of all the heavy stuff you have to carry. I do agree jogging can be useful. I personally ruck and jog but I do shorter distance runs and interval workouts in order to have shorter distance speed.

@@JosephAllen-d2ethis sounds like a scrawny kid cope dude 😂 if weight lifting didn’t help combat UFC fighters wouldnt be training specific olympic lifts like deadlift or powerclean. Secondly. Why did the US army adopt exercises like that? Cope harder bro. I guarantee I’m better off doing weighted pullups/dips with weighted rucks is going to be much more beneficial than jogging. Am cutting jogging out? No. But every only-runner I see isn’t just build like gumby but weak AF. Worked with this twig that was into mountain biking and running. Always talked shit about endurance. He assumed me being built like a linebacker meant no endurance. As soon as it came time to continuously moving heavy weight for extended periods he flopped. Loved talking shit back to him watching him struggle “come on dude what happened to that endurance” 🤣

@JoshuaBunkowske Weightlifting structured in super sets with rest periods that are brief enough to keep the heart rate in the aerobic range would be a good option if you had to pick just one type of exercise. But that's not a real concern. We can always pick more than one type of exercise. The workout he links in the pinned comment looks pretty tight. An athletic conditioning and strength training program, such as Mark Verstagen's Core Performance, would be great as well.

I'm in the air force. Yea que the jokes. I refuse to do running to run. I run the couple months going up to my PT test. The rest of it is a few suicide sprints to get my blood going then I put on my pack and ruck the perimeter of the base. I hike in the mountains with my dog. I lift weights. My run times skyrocketed the last few years after I started doing this verses running all the time and it's better on my joints.

Do we need to run? Do we need to run for endurance? No
@twestgard2
@twestgard2 Ай бұрын
What’s missing here is effort to define the goal. The definition of endurance is completely misapplied here. There’s a tiny number of people for whom “doing grunt stuff” actually is the goal, and for them I suppose this is fine advice. But if you look at most Americans, including (I suspect) most people watching this video, the actual problem we deal with is building a lifestyle that includes staying in shape for the long term. The “grunt stuff” recommended in this video, doing eight hour patrols with a heavy pack (9:41), isn’t possible for almost anyone long term, and more importantly, isn’t particularly useful for almost anyone long term. Think what threats we realistically face. First and above all, most of us are threatened by the dangers of falling completely out of shape, and the solution to that is an exercise program that we can maintain our entire lives. That means it has to fit into having a job and having a family. And the other realistic threat is a short term emergency: disabled vehicle in a remote location, or extreme weather like the recent hurricanes. Trying to maintain eight hour patrols with a sixty pound pack is a recipe for failure. It’s not sustainable as a lifestyle so it’s not actually endurance. It’s literally a boy’s fantasy instead of the man’s job of figuring out what the situation needs and finding an answer for that.
