CLIP DESCRIPTION:
Danilov (Joseph Fiennes) helps Zaitsev (Jude Law) find the location of an enemy sniper.
FILM DESCRIPTION:
A turning point in 20th century war history is the focus of this fact-based account of the 1942-1943 battle of Stalingrad, in which the Germans were finally defeated by Russian influence -- one of the bloodiest battles in World War II history. The film stars Jude Law as Vassili, a marksman from the Urals who is transported to Stalingrad in 1942, and a master German sniper, Major Koenig (Ed Harris). Koenig, an expert German sniper, is determined to eliminate his formidable opponent by any means necessary; meanwhile, Vassili has joined forces with Danilov (Joseph Fiennes), a young Russian political adversary, who is impressed by Vassili's skills and raises his profile in the Soviet Union. Both Vassili and Danilov become involved with Tanya (Rachel Weisz), whose Jewish parents have been captured by the Germans and have forced her to take up with the men on a sniper expedition. Koenig and Vassili begin to develop traps for each other, until fate inevitably must bring the two sharpshooters together. This large-scale production, financed mostly by Teuton companies, also features Bob Hoskins as Nikita Krushchev and Ron Perlman as an aging Russian sniper.

I assumed he took it off to make it a cleaner kill. "It won't save me so you may as well blow my head off and make it quick". You could be right though. Danilov was a really well written character. Probably the most complex personality of the movie. Driven by ideological believ in Socialism. But he also truly loves Tanya which sees him only as a friend. And when he lost her for ever he was so devastated that he saw no reason to live anymore. Pretty much anything he did was so human and if not always good it was relatable.
@maplemaple1439
@maplemaple1439 Жыл бұрын
Disagree personally. He died with comradeship. He gave drive for Vasily (telling him that someone he cared about had died again), and gave himself for Vasily to succeed. He may have become disillusioned politically, but he still cared about his friend, something that surpasses ideology. Of course you could argue the inverse and say Danilov was so sick of it all he just wanted to die and make Vasily miserable, but that wouldn't make sense since Tanya was alive anyways.
@CrniWuk
@CrniWuk Жыл бұрын
@@maplemaple1439 Yeah, particularly when he reported that Vasily was lazy in hunting the Major because he was jealous about him. He even explains it here. "I've been such a fool Vasily, man will always be man. (...) But there is always something to envy.".

Brilliant portrayal of a true existential crisis! Tania's "death" may have been the trigger, but the suicide is the result of something much deeper. Danilov is a true believer in a utopian ideology he now realizes is impossible. He has realized the destruction he caused everyone around him from giving into his base human urges, something that should be beneath him. His life has been a devastating lie & he no longer has a place in this world. The only thing "useful" to give his life meaning, is to help his friend. Brilliant performance!

+TehMorbidAtheist Well yes, and humanity has made progress little by little, step by step. But there are some things in this world which'll always hold unfairness, perhaps being born into a broken home or born with some terrible defect, or having little family to rely on, or perhaps as Danilov says you find yourself unfortunate in romance or even in the ability to give a well received gift. Maybe it's the curse of our hubris to always be seeking for something we don't have or to better ourselves even if it is truly unchangeable (as with the examples listed above). But I suppose that's where the virtue of acceptance comes in, to be humble enough to be alright with your own circumstance even in comparison to those who may be more fortunate.

Rajmund Csombordi Except the shark anecdote in no way describes reality, even sharks have the sense to try not to kill members of their own species for individual gain - if they had capitalistic instincts then this would happen. Liberalism and Capitalism is an ideology for fat, decadent merchants who are obsessed with generating wealth above all else and who have no in-group loyalties - and they are the weak ones because of it. They placate themselves with lies such as "the rights of man" and that "all men are born equal", to say that nature holds these principles is laughable as they are purely abstract and "have to be forced" as you said. Fascism at its core is strength through unity and hierarchy, and these words apply particularly to social animals such as humans in their natural environment - the tribe. This has been the basis for social organisation since man has walked the Earth, there is nothing artificially forced about it. Only recently have flimsy experimental ideas such as Liberalism and Egalitarianism been tried.

This scene is epic... "there will be always something to envy... man will always be man..." Ah, if we could ever have enough knowledge to understand that our own demons come from our own acts, arrogance and envy... The world would surely be way more peaceful than it is today... I understand that. I think one of the biggest reasons (especially old university colleagues of mine) that people lie is so that they can protect their 'reputation'. I always say: "honest people get screwed over the most". This is true. If I am completely honest about things, I end up getting screwed. What's ugly is that the liars get away with things. Example: I had a fight with a family member and he asked me to state the truth. I did and he did not believe me and cut me off. Prejudice crap..

A lot of people say that snipers are the worst in warfare scenario to get in. But I honestly disagree. A inaccurate bullet from normal infantry men can just wound you and make you suffer and scream. A sniper is very precise and you wouldn't even know what the hell is going on and your just suddenly dead. You don't even have enough time to react to the pain. My great grandfather said that during the war in stalingrad. He and his comrade were scouting ahead of the platoon. To lighten the tense dark mood, my great granddad told a small joke, which made the other soldier laugh. Then suddenly a sniper bullet shot through his head and when my great grand dad looked back at the dead body... The soldier still had a faint smile on his face. That shows how snipers can kill a man without them even realising.

"Man will always be a man. There is no new man. We tried so hard to create a society that was equal, where there'd be nothing to envy your neighbour. But there's always something to envy. A smile, a friendship, something you don't have and want to appropriate. In this world, even a Soviet one, there will always be rich and poor. Rich in gifts, poor in gifts. Rich in love, poor in love." The beautiful last words of a repentant communist... a brief reminder of why communism has and will always fail (unless humans evolve past self-interest).

+marcfigu Spoken like a true liberal. Falsely using capitalism and corporatism in equivocal ways; corporatism is what has failed, not capitalism. This is because liberals and democrats beginning with the Fed in 1913 replaced successful capitalism with this oligarchy of cooperation and government control. Capitalism took thirteen colonies to the leader of the world in 100 years. Socialism and communism take countries like Russia, England, and France from the top to the middle in ten to twenty years. Keep believing the lie that capitalism is the same as socialism, communism or corporatism.

Equality does not imply the leveling of individual difference, nor that individuals should be made physically, morally, or mentally identical. Diversity in capabilities and powers far from being a social evil, constitutes, on the contrary, the abundance of humanity. Economic and social inequality means the equalization of personal wealth, but not restricting what a man may acquire by his own skill, productive energy, or thrift. -Mikhail Bakunin

My hypothesis: There was never a Tanya. All along Vasili was in love with his rifle and made up this love triangle in his head to cope with the horror of combat. After months of trying to convince his delusional friend he’s gone insane, Danilov finally understands that it’s hopeless. Realizing he must add to his friends psychosis for the victory of the motherland Danilov pretends to be part of the love triangle between Vasili and his rifle, even going so far as to sacrifice himself to add to the illusion of the grief of “Tanya’s” rejection. Look at his face at 0:01 War is hell.

This movie is criminally underrated, and I’ll never understand why. It’s my favourite war movie ever. The battle of Stalingrad is probably the most important battle ever in history because the fate of the world was really decided here. Of course, Americans in Normandy did a lot, but it’s here that the soviets gave nazy germany the strongest hit in the conflict. 27 milion soviets died because of nazy germany, we owe them eternal gratitude. About the movie, it’s absolutely beautiful.
