On October 1, Skanska and our partners conducted a controlled demolition to bring down the old Kosciuszko Bridge for the State of New York. The bridge was demolished through energetic felling-a process in which a series of small charges are detonated to sever some of the structural members of the bridge spans, allowing them to collapse in a controlled fashion. This was the first-ever bridge felling in New York City, and the largest felling of any kind within city limits. This followed the lowering of the 2,400-ton main span of the former bridge in August. The successful demolition comes six months after Skanska celebrated the opening of the first two new bridges that will replace the Kosciuszko Bridge.
