From www.swimmingpoo... - Variable speed pool pump flow rate and power consumption bench test. 2" suction and pressure side lines. Watch how much power this pump consumes at all RPM speeds between 500 and 3450. You will also see how much flow rate the pump generates for these speeds as well.

hello steve had you ever been a fan of the solar system ? when can we see a video of solar DC MOTORSFOR swinming pools?are them better than a variable ac motor for the movement of water? please give it a shot to see what do you think, thanks, bye

My one speed motor produces probably around 37 GPM, which circulates my pool in maybe about 6 hours. I don't have all that fancy equipment to tell me what the actual flow is, let alone energy usage. I'm guessing 90% of pool owners are in my situation there. So why would I want a variable speed motor? Run at a lower speed for a longer amount of time to take advantage of that exponential reduction in power consumption you talked about? It would use a quarter of the energy at half speed but would need to run twice as long, correct? So 50% savings. If that's the case, the optimum would be to run at the lowest possible trickle over 24 hours that still circulated everything. I think the video would be much better if you explained the cost savings in that manner, if I'm even correct in looking at the cost savings in that way. The video left me with more questions than answers. If you said, for example at the low rating the pool will circulate in 10 hours, and will cost this much, and at the middle rating 5 hours and cost this much, and the high rating in 2 hours and cost this much, then I think that might be compelling. But I don't know what I'm comparing to what with this video.

My pool builder is saying we can't upgrade to 2" plumbing because they don't make return fixtures in 2" for vinyl liners. What say you?

3 quick questions. 1) What was the HP of the pump you used? I'm assuming a 1.5HP. 2) If 1.5HP does the values double with a 3HP Pentair pump? If not do they stay the same not matter what HP the Pentair is?

Now if the variable speed pump was seized would it let you know?

Is it the best way to close loop control regulation flow according to the specification of filter?

Okay Steve, great information I can see the linear vs exponential relationship between power consumption and flow. My last question is what this would look like pumping an in ground system. The example you give in this video is an above ground tank that, in my guess, helps the pumps efficiently as downward pressure is providing a lot of work for the pump. Please do this same example on an in ground system.

Inground or above ground or on the moon makes no difference because you can measure he total resistance to flow. Total resistance to flow measured in feet of head is all that matters to the pump. It does not know the orientation of the pool, just the resistance to flow. This system approximates 25 feet of head which you can use to extrapolate flow rate on a pump curve. But yes, a system with 50 feet of head would be interesting also. The results for non linear reduction of power with lowering rpm will remain the same but total flow potential will have been reduced.

Why did the KWh remain nearly constant with only a slight increase as you raised the rpm?

The kWh is the total power consumed. It goes up slowly as you are only seeing the numbers for a minute. If you were consuming 5 kWh for example, then after one hour of running the meter would read 5 kWh
