Jsb pellets are pure lead with no antimony unlike most other modern pellets and are notorious for not penetrating as well. Good idea for a test but get pellets with the same density so it's fair and you have real results. My guns with equal weight pellets, the antimony pellets blast right through steel cans much easier while the pure lead is too soft to penetrate well. The one thing I didn't see you mention that I noticed is the difference in how it shocked the cans and how far they went. The main effect of momentum is a bowling type effect so that would be a good thing to measure, how far it knocks it back.

In regards to impacts on steel targets, mild or AR plate: over decades of shooting I can tell you velocity damages them more. An example: At 100 yards even on a hard AR500 plate a 338 Lapua with over 5000 ft/lbs energy (~2700 fps) doesn't even put a pit on the surface, where a 223 over 3000 fps or a 22-250 near 4000 fps (~1200 ft/lbs) does. Mild steel can be shot with thousands of handgun rounds but one shot from a 30/30 will blow right through. Great video, I've been jumping into these pcp guns and having a blast also.

Energy equals mass at the speed of light squared. Higher velocity increases mass and energy. You saw it. Einstein was correct. I always choose higher velocity ammo over slower heaver ammo. But hey, I'm only an expert marksman... Choose what works best for your guns.

For metal and bone, there is a "threshold velocity" required to punch through, regardless of energy or momentum. Your heavier pellet was too slow to penetrate steel well.

For penetration the relevant data you want is the energy divided by the cross-sectional diameter. The larger the number the better it will penetrate. So the two main items that control these factors is the velocity your projectile leaves the gun, and how long your projectile is. Longer, faster projectiles penetrate better than shorter, slower ones.
@Beesa10

These pellets have the same diameter, the pellet with greater energy was the heavier pellet yet it didn't penetrate better. Interesting to think about what's going on

great video, Is that energy from the 22 pellet that you need to kill if you miss by a little bit with 177 you don't have a kill, because it's straight through and through where the shockwave of the energy off the 22 pellet will kill them.

Would be interesting to know the difference between the alloys used to make the pellets - as they're from two different manufacturers, chances are that they didn't use the same percentages of lead/antimony, so one pellet is possibly harder than the other.

I believe your test is flawed. JSB pellets are very soft lead. So they will deform quickly upon contact. Thus limiting penetration. You will have to test with the same type of lead and same pellet head. For instance, you can't test hollow points against domed. Crossman and H&N are harder lead. But since you already have JSB monsters. You should try JSB 15gr domed against them. Also consider testing at different distance. The monsters have a higher ballistic coefficient and should hold power better downrange. Liked and subscribed. Looking forward to seeing more 👍🎯
@thesylvanshadow4223
@thesylvanshadow4223 3 жыл бұрын
If it satisfies your curiosity the 13.1 hatsans are similar to the JSB monsters in hardness and are almost half the weight and both are dome points which is part of why they were chosen for this test. Also the same brand will use different alloys for different pellets, example; H&N HP slugs are extremely soft. Thanks for all the effort to write that long comment, thanks for watching.

I did something similar using .308 and .223. I took two rounds with similar fpe but different velocities and looked at their TKO ratings. The .308 (reduced load) had a TKO of “10”. The .223 round (slightly reduced load) had a TKO of 5. TKO is basically a momentum score. Is shot both at a medium size game analog simulating bone & soft tissue. The results are interesting. I’m not sure the results match your test but take a look. kzbin.info/www/bejne/gH6uqomhjZabd80si=y78ZMOJdqwlnfQ-x
