Couldn't agree more. Unfortunately, many people are nearly phobic about math and run the other way when it is used to explain things like ballistics, especially here in the USA. I suspect the culprit is how math is taught in our public schools, too often convincing kids that math is a foe rather than a friend. Jess

At 7:20 "No amount of spin is going to correct an out of balance bullet" This is not true! The faster any object spins the more stable it becomes even if it is out of balance. The rotational force of spin can exceed the force caused by the off center of gravity imbalance and it can cancel the out ward movement when increasing rotational force. This happens all the time in my clothing washing machine. And it can, does, and will happen with bullets. This is common mythology throughout the shooting world that is not show on any targets. What is shown on targets is wobblers, tumblers, and random flyers caused by not enough spin!

The main reason I like pellets over slugs is they use less air for a given velocity and they are 2-3x cheaper to shoot. If I want more power I will go to rim fire then center fire. Gets old filling air tanks. at 50 yards pellets are very accurate less picky. Are not as twist rate picky as slugs which are stablized by twist rate more than diablo pellets are. Not going to turn a air gun into a powder gun. You start to use more air, more money on slugs. Just grab a rimfire if you need more range.

Matt. Can you get in touch with me please, unfortunately there are some issues in this video which give the wrong impressions on how pellet stability works. I speak as someone who has worked in the theoretical and practical aeroballistics of gun launched projectiles for 40 years including pellets, bullets, artillery shells, tank ammunition and just about everything else ever launched from a gun.
@lensman57626 жыл бұрын
I am very interested to learn about this issue.
@milesm14656 жыл бұрын
Unfortunately it is not just one issue and a full explanation of all the issues would require a lot of space and time. But one of the first issues is in the basic method of stability and the aerodynamics involved. Pellets are not drag stabilised contrary to popular myth and the suggestions in the diagrams.
@jasonnewton38425 жыл бұрын
@@milesm1465 Is there any litrature to support your claim, Im sure this will have surprised a few people especially myself.
@milesm14655 жыл бұрын
@Sid Vicious Pellets are flare stabilised a common and simple way of stabilising projectiles where drag is not important, typically very short range projectiles. Flares stabilse in the same way fins do by producing normal forces at right angles to the pellet centreline. This produces a stabilising moment about the pellet centre of gravity. Pellet axial forces act through the centre of gravity and thus cannot produce any stabilising moment. True drag stabilised projectiles use ribbons, parachutes or flexible drag devices which stay pointing in the same direction when the projectile yaws and thus produce a stabilising moment about the centre of gravity.
@milesm14655 жыл бұрын
@@jasonnewton3842 The literature to support my claim is any basic aerodynamics text book which will show the true definition of centre of pressure (which is not as shown in this video) and the way in which any flare stabilises through producing normal forces at right angles to the projectile centre line as explained by slender body theory with a relatively long moment arm to the centre of gravity. Aerodynamic stability is all about aerodynamic moments about the centre of gravity, not forces. It really is basic aerodynamic stuff which anyone who has studied or worked in projectile aerodynamics and ballistics should know. However, perhaps the most obvious flaw in the explanation given in this video is that, just like the diabolo pellet, the drag at the back of a slug is also much higher than the drag of the front at subsonic speeds and yet it is not aerodynamically stable which it should be if stability was due to drag forces. And no, Matt has never been in touch despite my emailing him.

Your videos are great. I have 2 years of college level Physics and a Bachelor of science Electrical engineering and at minimum, double the amount of years of experience shooting. I have seen your presentation on bullet behavior from other imaginary experts. There are no physics equations that predict any spinning object becomes OVER-STABILIZED from to much rotation, even if the center of gravity is off center. The exact opposite is predicted by actual physics. The faster any object spins the more stable and resistant to change it becomes. If it is out of balance the rotational force can exceed the outward force caused by the imbalanced center of gravity. When you sum the vectored forces the effect is not a wobbling spiral. Wobbling spirals are caused from not enough spin to properly stabilize, not to much spin. The bottom line is the faster anything spins, even out of balance the more stable it becomes. The only ways this is ever not correct, is when the speed of the bullet is fast enough to cause the bullet to be stripped by the rifling, where heat, friction, or centrifugal force causes the bullet to melt or loose its shape changing how air friction acts on the bullet during it's flight. Shooting lightweight bullets in high twist rates causing them to become over-stabilized is mythological nonsense. I have shot .224 40 grain out of a custom 1 in 6 twist and they are not over stabilized from to much spin. Spin drift is also myth.The bullet is spinning perpendicular to the direction of force that spin effects movement of the spinning object and the net force is zero, equaling zero spin drift. One would have to have the bullet spinning off perpendicular to direction of travel for spin drift to happen. And your statement about rate of spin changing during flight was off. The RPM will remain the same through flight unless friction from air acts in a way to reduce RPM. The RPM remains the same and is independent of velocity.

The consensus now is that slugs are more accurate past 75 yards especially if there’s a breeze and the slugs, hold more energy when hitting a target. Many of the FX gun pros are exclusively, shooting slugs now. I can’t seem to find any kind of test showing exactly how much energy a slug will produce compared to a pellet at 50 yards or 75 yards. Is it 25% more energy is it 50% more energy? Have you done any test on this? If not would you consider doing any? Basically, it would have to be done using plywood, ballistics gel, and possibly a hog skull to see the penetration compared to a pellet.

I have never heard of long range centerfire competition being limited on what shape the bullet has to be . This rule about only massed production pellets being allowed to be used is totally ridiculous. What idiot made up that rule . They are putting the long range air rifle sport to a end . How can it grow to longer distances if slugs are not allowed . Its the stupidest thing I have ever heard of . There needs to be a open class . If they have a open class everyone would be shooting in it and the pellet shooters would stop at the 100 yard mark while the slug shooters can go out to 300 and 400 yards . What are they afraid of ?

At 12:55 you say they don't allow slugs in competitions . If you can use a better projectile out of a air gun that is better than what was used in the past it doesn't make any since to not allow what is the most accurate . You don't just not allow whats better you just make another class . Its like the air gun itself , You allow a pcp to be used because its more accurate than a spring air gun . You don't not allow it to be used you just make a different class . What the airgun field is doing by not allowing slugs in any class is dumbing down the sport in a big way and that has to change . This is how stupid the air gun field has become in the extreme shooting competitions, they do not allow any pellet that is made from a mold that you can buy and pour your self . The rule is you have to use a mass produced pellet . How stupid is that ? People were getting out shot by the mold pellets so the other shooters that didn't want to take the time to make a better pellet complained that it was unfair because they had a better projectile than what they could set on their fat asses and order on line . That is not the way to better a sport . The way to make a sport better for people to keep improving on whats out their now . If you want to set on your ass and order pellets that's fine just don't try to dumb down the sport . You don't stop the people that are willing to take the time to make the best projectile they can that works out of their gun. What they are allowing to happen because of a few people is ridiculous. I hope people just stop showing up for the shoots in protest of not allowing the best projectile to be used . The simplest thing to do is just make a class for the massed produced pellets and then one for a open class where custom projectile can be used . Once the other shooters see how much better the other projectiles are , if they want to compete they will change classes and do what needs to be done to compete in that class . Its not a extreme bench if you are limited to mass produced pellets . Its called extreme lazy bench . Extreme means you go beyond the limits. So don't stop progress add a extreme open class and the sport will grow and get better and more accurate at longer distances . Stop dumbing out the sport of airguns you lazy ass bunch of rule makers .

The difference may be, but probably will not be, measurable, while the initial muzzle velocity is much higher than the target velocity. It is precisely this reduction in the linear velocity of the projectile along the projectile's flight path that causes the rotation to linear velocity ratio to be disturbed. It is the speed of the projectile on the route between the barrel and the target that decreases dramatically, while the rotation speed remains almost unchanged. The length of the path between the end of the barrel and the target is 100 meters, and the length of the path that the rotating pellet has to travel, it will make 200 revolutions with a projectile circumference of 34.55 mm, this gives a distance of 6911 mm, i.e. about 7 meters of angular path in relation to 100 meters that the projectile must beat to target. Matt, shot spinning speed cannot change during the projectile's flight, which lasts only about 0.5 seconds. On the other hand, the ratio of the projectile spin speed to the flight speed of the projectile flying towards the target changes. When this speed is excessively reduced, the spin speed remains at a similar level as when exiting the bullet barrel. Suddenly the missile is over stabilized relative to its currently reduced velocity.

That is precisely what Matt said. That the velocity/spin ratio changes as the projectile slows.
