ugh Tyler is 100% right. this frustrated me so much. The American Dream is basically getting a job, getting married, having kids , and being financially stable. Its not our fault that movies and media has convinced other country's that were all about money. The American Dream is based off of hard work to eventually get to a stable place in life. basically everyone's own form of happiness.

I completely understand Tylers frustration. The American Dream is not to be filthy rich so how is it our countries fault that other countries misinterpreted the American Dream? America has only been around for 238 years but the kings of other countries from thousands of years ago were draped in gold and jewels but somehow its Americas fault that people show off wealth. They should try looking back in history when America didn't even exist and they will know that the rich, in every country, always showed off their wealth.

kgfan celebrities show off their wealth because it brings them more attention and therefore more business. Many other wealthy Americans spend their lives downplaying their wealth. I think the thing we can be most proud of is that while we do have immense wealth, there aren't distinguishable classes that prevent people from moving from one economic status to another.

i may be wrong, but for me the american dream was something the immigrants looked up to. immigrants came to america to start a new life. they wanted to better their quality of life and they thought america was the answer. they wanted to give their children and their families the opportunities that weren't/not easily available in their original country. that, to me, is the american dream. other nations may interpret it differently as time perverses the meanings of many things. added with the globalization and communicative aura of the world now, it is easy for things to get twisted and lose their meaning. tyler looked offended. as he is the son of an immigrant, it is rightfully so. he, like many children born from immigrant parents, was raised with the stories of how his father sowed his hopes and dreams into america. it is not necessarily an immigrant's dream to become rich in america. they are just striving to improve the condition of their lives.

Eun Jin Haneul yes!!! Couldn't have said it better myself as a daughter of immigrants I feel the exact same way I got so offended as well. My parents didn't come to the US to show off wealth they came so that we could be SAFE and have an education and the most opportunities available to us. I would have been so much more mad than Tyler it's like after he made his point the other countries should have backed down because that's their distorted perception of the American dream to actual Americans we know what it is about.

not telling him wrong they were telling him that's how 99% of the rest of the world sees it as. flaunting wealth is seen as extremely tacky and distasteful in the most of the rest of the world. last time i stayed in america a good part of a conversation on a few evening when meeting people was either solely job related or talking about how much wealth they had and were making a year. if you do that in france people will smile and put up with you for the evening but talk about you behind your back and will not want to associate with you/avoid you in the future. not saying only americans do it but if a french person does it we immediately distance ourselves from that person even if we earn more than them

Europe had a traditional aristocratic class, who had accumulated wealth, and so were more seclusive and less exhibitive about it. On the other hand, American high class made wealth as enterpreneurs, and so they tended to publicize their new earned status with conspicuous spending--a nouveau riche culture. Sociology explains that these "high cultures" of the high class tend to be emulated by common people of those respective regions. So, I think the European panels were trying to bring up this cultural/historical difference when saying that so-called "bragging about wealth" came from the US... not as a general diagnosis of US people, which can't avoid being offensive...

Their arguments against Tyler is just simply stupid. So they're all blaming US for having their countries perceive US as a country of show offs and the inventor of "American Dream." No, it is in the eye of the beholder. You perceived that and that is your fault. That's like you think a handsome man is showing off his handsomeness when all he does is just stand there in one place. You perceived him as handsome and he did not brand himself as handsome. He is just himself. Also like a poem, there are many interpretations of "American Dream" and US.
@BLU_GR.Y
@BLU_GR.Y 6 жыл бұрын
well handsomeness is a bit different - b/c you can't really hide it, but you can be humble and not brag or be obnoxious about your good looks versus being wealthy, where yo u can be on the DL about it and not be flashy af and esp. with internet, social media, etc. it's so easy to show off your wealth these days which isn't exactly necessary to do even IF you are rich if u were wealthy, you can also be humble and you don't have to do things like show off your million dollar car on instagram or something stupid like that the culture of being a show-off stems from american culture and capitalism personally, i dont think this showing off of wealth is the "american dream" but a perversion of the american dream

Poor Tyler, I think we all wanted to step in there to help him. He’s absolutely right and the arguments against him were totally baffling. I am offended bc my parents and grandparents risked there lives immigrating to the US for a better lifestyle for themselves and their family. In no means were they traveling here in the benefits of showing off their status and wealth. The main priority at the time was safety and shelter. This “American Dream” can be perceived in so many different notions and you can’t generalize it for an entire country. Thank you Tyler for standing your ground and representing America in the most humble way.

Although to other countries America may seem like they're just flaunting wealth around, the panel (besides Tyler of course) is missing the point that the "american dream" was never like that in the first place, I can't deny that it could have been corrupted over a couple years which is apparent in the media and was even a main theme in Fitzgerald's The Great Gatsby, but America is still the "land of opportunity" for many people all over the globe. Opportunities doesn't necessarily mean wealth but it means being happy, settling down and creating an economically stable family. My parents didn't come to America to get rich and show it off to everyone else, they came to create a better environment for me and my siblings-- this is what the real American Dream is. (ahhh late but had to get this out there!! and such a big fan of this show i cant believe i just got into it)

omg for the first time I want to jump there! I could had his back! and I agree with Tyler said. idk where they got that idea of the American dream. because when my parents came into the country it was totally different. I feel the American dream is coming for a bad situation and leaving your hometown to start over and make a better life for your family. that's what my parents did. I don't like how people take things from movies or even like he said celebrities and thinking there facts. if the table was flip they would understand.

Catch_Me_If_You_Can yeah for money TO live well enough and not be in a BAD situation my parents did that as well it's not about money only it's about being safe getting and so forth but in ALL of this the American dream is NOT about showing off money it is simply about moving from bad situation to a better situation. As an American the American dream is not about showing off wealth but about living a secure happy life. Totally different things and that's how most Americans feel too.

I don't think the other panelists understand the concept of the American Dream at all. And as an American I found this extremely frustrating to watch. The American Dream is having the ability and opportunity to achieve one's own happiness. For the elite (who account for a very small percentage of the population) that may be buying that $20,000 pair of shoes and posting a picture of it to social media. For someone else, that may be simply having a roof over one's head and feeding their family at the end of the day. To each their own. I assumed it was common sense that Hollywood movies and celebrities do not represent millions of people, but apparently this is not the case.

It's funny how they perceive what the American dream really is - and to be fair music, movies and television have undermined the hard working class people. Yes they have debt and crisis but honestly they go to work and have to feed their families like everyone else. There are homeless and jobless poverty stricken people in the US as well. I'm not American but as an outsider looking in it's a bit frustrating to hear this. What country doesn't have its share of problems. And for the record if you're looking at ONLY the elite in the US and judging the entire country by that then you have some real issues. You might want to take maybe an economics course or history as well. Basically, poor Tyler was sticking up for the middle and lower class Americans and got flak for it. The panel must think he's a show off too I guess.

+orchidRiTa18 It is not your fault nor Americans'. But it is true that American media and some of celebrities make people to perceive the American dream wrongly. And Judging everything from small matter is really common in our society, and we should consider this phenomenon seriously, especially if it is caused by media. You cannot blame on the kids who wrongly influenced by Justin Bieber. You might want to take media and political science class.

I find debates like these to be very hard to define. The "American Dream" is actually a really outdated and close-minded concept. Yeah, what the other guys were saying is quite true. America is very influential because of its power, so the whole showing off thing can be a result of other countries seeing how Americans live in the media and then copying it. On the other hand though, America is filled with different people that come from different backgrounds. Tyler was right, if you are an immigrant, your dream isn't to be famous and rich, your dream is more about stability and financial security. Much like how other countries don't like to be stereotyped, people should also keep in mind that America is a melting pot, therefore there really isn't a standard "American Dream".

@wholesome122 7 жыл бұрын
Lorraine Garcia agreed. the American dream for one person could be traveling around and living a minimalist lifestyle out of their car while for another it is to have a house and a family. Essentially it is the idea that there are not classes or barriers to prevent you from pursuing what you want to pursue and being successful. Granted, we still have barriers today but we continue to work on them so that opportunity can exist for everyone.

As an immigrant here in the US, it frustrates me when they say the American Dream is all about accumulating wealth. Maybe it is true for some people, but others are because of freedom & independence that they don't get to have in the country they left behind. The misconception that other countries have about American Dream, I can also partly blame on some immigrants who came to the US. I personally know of some people who, when they go back to their home country, they act like they're very wealthy -- spending left & right -- and thus making people believe that the American Dream is just all about having lots of money.

WE didn't make you form this opinion or that perception. You judged it based on your own knowledge. The U.S. is not responsible for what you perceive, it's all you. Showing off is very much about status. If you're not born into a middle/upper class family and you didn't have that head start in life (going to all the best schools, going to university, being able to pay hospital fees when things go tits up, connections/networking/the family name or a title) then all you've really got to set yourself apart from everyone else and enhance your own authority is the wealth that you've made despite your initially disadvantageous position. The American Dream is about the process of 'rags to riches', riches don't necessarily have to be about money, some people's idea of having a good life is having lots of kids running around the house or only working Monday to Friday and having the entire weekend off. But it just so happens that the top paragraph fits into the concept of the American dream and because it's the media, we always hear about the worse cases of extravagance and wasting money because the scenarios in the bottom paragraph are ultimately quite boring. There's no shock factor involved.

I feel bad for Tyler, with all these guys going against him ,:( . But he was definitely right, the American Dream was a term coined by immigrants, as they believed that when coming to the US they would be able to accomplish something here that would have otherwise been hard or impossible to accomplish in their home country, it means(mostly) to be able have a job, be economically stable and to in general have a good quality of life. I don't know where these other countries are getting the idea that it means to show off your "wealth"....I mean if that is their mistranslated definition then that is on them, and it has nothing to do with the US. Also the topic of showing off wealth, well there are people that do that all over the world not just in the US and it mostly depends on the person, because also a lot of people, don't feel comfortable showing off, so I think that they were generalizing the US a bit too much with those comments.

This kind of pissed me off because they didn't listen to Tyler and were completely against him. Like he said none of them are American so they wouldn't understand the American Dream. I see the American Dream as settling down and reaching your point of happiness not about becoming rich so you can show it off in other people's faces. They should've listened to him and his perspective as an American instead of blatantly blaming the U.S. for flaunting their money. It's not the U.S. Fault that your country sees the American Dream as becoming rich and flaunting your money. You can't tell me that that's the American Dream if you yourself are not American. If they're saying that all Americans flaunt their money than I can say that all Germans are nazis because hitler was German and that all Asians are Chinese because China is the biggest Asian country. If you're not American then you can't tell me what the American Dream is okay. I can't tell you what your culture is or what it stands for therefore you can't tell me what American culture is or stands for especially the American Dream. My parents came to the U.S. from Mexico to give me and my siblings a better chance and to build a life here. That's what the American Dream is, not showing off your money.

Not a fan of America but when we talk about wealth, let's go back to history. There are many civilizations like the Egyptians, Greek and Romanians who make wealth as a symbol of power and wisdom. My parent’s “American Dream” was safety and financial stability. Their home town was poor to the point where almost everyone stopped studying during their elementary or middle school years to help their parents work. My parents only graduated middle school but they couldn’t go to H.S bc the supply cost was too high for them. With limited job prospects, they felt they had no other choice but to go to the U.S. Although we were never rich, there was always a roof over our heads and food on the table. More importantly, our city was safe and we were guaranteed and education with opportunities for college. My mom always said she was okay remaining poor as long as her daughters were able to go to college. The American Dream is different for everyone.

Its definitely considered rude to brag about your wealth in the US... but ppl will likely not scold you for it b/c American have a mentality of “you be you and I’ll be me”. This is speaking as a foreigner who has lived in the US for many many years. Even though Americas can be outspoken at times, they also have a tendency to ignore strange/rude/disruptive behaviors as just being a quirk of someones personality. Like if ur not hurting someone or going over on the rudeness they just don’t care what u do. I found this rather refreshing and liberating as this is most definitely not the case in my home county...

In my sophomore English class we had to discuss what the American Dream means to us after we read of Mice & Men, & everyone has a different interpretation. Not everyone who reached an American Dream was American. It’s about choosing what u want to do & follow ur dreams. A lot of foreigners had the idea of the American Dream because they wanted a better life. It’s not our fault some celebrities go & flaunt their wealth on social media. They interpreted the meaning in the wrong & they can’t judge a country just by some celebrities.

Tyler is right, it's just the Europe's interpretation of the "American Dream" they see from movies and celebs. Many other countries showed off money and wealth, it's just the fact that US is very open and has a larger presence that we usually see opposed to other countries.

Tyler man, the struggle is real. I got frustrated exactly when you did!! yes it's ALL OF AMERICA'S FAULT that these other countries put so much more importance into our movies and celebrities. 😒😒😒 meanwhile Europeans were the ones refusing to let go of aristocracy, being the super rich kings and queens and their families staying super rich(and in power) for generations. and then the poor, who always stay poor and have no way of changing that. not even their children or their childrens' children. The "AMERICAN DREAM" was inspired by the thought that; if you bust your ass hard enough, you can go from nothing to whatever you wish to get from life. generally being the family, house, car, etc. none of them would know better than him, you tell 'em ty!!!!

I got so frustrated watching this, Tyler is right! We don't show off our riches because it out others down and it is still considered rude in America too. Having a house in a safe neighborhood , stable finance, and making sure your descendants live a good life is the America Dream. Last year in my class we had a discussion on the American Dream and everyone had said similar thing to what I just said with a few thrown in such as health care and good educations. We all never show off out wealth or success, I know a very few people who live a privileged life but they never mentioned it because they know it is not acceptable to show off. In America, no one show off unless it is a celebrity doing it (also remember, some celebrities are very humbled too). In Europe they do show off, but do we ever called them out? Not usually, so why should they decide that is how American people act? Listen to Tyler, he knows what he is saying. He is right, we don't consider wealth as our dream, we just want to live an average life in a safe way.

When I was a kid, the American dream to me was something that looked really easy to get. I always thought that if I move to the US I can be so wealthy because the country looked so high level in technology, education, etc. but when I actually did move here I learned that the dream is actually hard work, get a good job, have a family and be financially stable. So, I understand the misunderstanding that the others had towards the American dream but I feel that they have to experience themselves before straight up blaming the US.

This is an interesting debate and I may be biased because I'm an American, but I don't believe the majority of us like to brag about our wealth. That's why it's considered extremely rude to talk money here (e.g. asking someone how much they make or how much they bought their house for) when it's perfectly normal to do so in many other countries like Korea. But I think the world perceives the opposite because we do everything in excess because of our wealth. But that's not because we want to brag. We're just fortunate enough to do so and want more for our own and others' satisfaction. And by more, I don't mean designer bags and $25k puppies. We want to feed our family and friends, go on vacations, live comfortably, and overall, just live happy lives. But the panel does have a point because although most Americans aren't braggers, we've come to tolerate the small minority who are more than other countries might. Like in hip hop, bragging is fundamental. The average American would roll their eyes at a Joe Schmoe constantly talking about his riches, but when we watch a music video or a show like MTV Cribs with this kind of in-your-face behavior, we don't think twice about it. We're numb to it because it's not PHYSICALLY in our face. But then the world sees this type of media and thinks all Americans have this attitude which is funny because many other countries are emulating our pop culture. So if others are going to call us out for this then they've gotta look in the mirror first.

The American Dream is about being able to work hard and achieve success. It's that no matter how low your economic and social status are, hard work will get you success. That's fundamentally what the American Dream is. BUT, in the 1920s, a lot of people turned materialistic. So, technically, I can see both sides. However, it is still lame to blame another country for indirectly influencing bad behavior... like what your people do is technically their fault.

That's not the definition of an American dream. Everybody has an American dream and they are all different. Making a lot of money and bragging about it could be an American Dream, but not for all. It's about success and showing that you have made, but that doesn't mean it's a bad thing. The media showed it wrong and/or others misinterpreted it wrong. You make it how you take it.

Tyler is so right! How is it our fault that people from other countries call "the american dream" something about wealth? To me, the american dream has always been a phrase used to suggest that someone is trying to make their situations better by moving to america. Also, side note, all of the people who immigrate here to make money that they are claiming ruin the perception of americans by essentially "flexing" (lol) are foreigners. I live in rural pennsylvania and nobody around here boasts about their money, and it is very important in american culture to volunteer and help others. Why do americans always look like the bad guys, when we are essentially a country made up of FOREIGNERS. Basically foreigners calling out other foreigners on their shit istg.

In my perspective, living in USA means having a stable life. What I mean by stable life..Perfect job, financially stable, own house. In my country, we long for high salary to sustain the needs. USA offers jobs whereas the salary is enough to save up. People who are considered rich in my country, migrates to USA, to purchase a land or a house so that they can have place to stay for vacations or stays there permanently. Some of us think, when you live in USA or in other parts of Europe, you are wealthy. I think the term "American dream" means you have enough money to live there for years. Not rich, but has enough money to live. I conclude that some people just misunderstood that term. Just my opinion though.

You can't blame all of Americans for something that rich Americans did. Its not my fault that Paris Hilton is out here buying 25k dogs, I've never even had 25k in my bank account. This really frustrates me. Their basically saying that American Dream is what's causing people to be brats or whatever. When in reality, the American dream is just living a good life. The life you want. Events such as the Gold Rush, or the building of the railroads and the steel industry is what made other people outside of the USA think that the American Dream is all about making it rich. In the end, it's the people outside of US viewing it in a different way and that's what makes them think that the American Dream is to gain wealth and status. Hope this makes sense. Lol

Where did the phrase "Keeping up with the Jone's" came from? Is it American? I think showing money off is different from country to country. I think UK has this too, but subtle. America is just in your face always - very expressive so that is why they come across like bragging. But there are definitely people who show off their money just in different approach.

THAT'S the 'american dream'.

The American Dream is and was never about flaunting wealth and showing off. To be simple, the American Dream is truly about survival. It’s about making a better life for oneself. The American Dream was built on the backbones of the immigrants who came to this country from the 1860s to the late 1920s. They came here because living and working in America was better than what they had in Europe, Asia, or South America. To say that the American Dream is about flaunting power and wealth is just wrong and insulting to the people who practically worked themselves to death in the factories of 19th and 20th century America. If you want proof look at the big names in our history. Andrew Carnegie was a Scottish immigrant who had nothing, but because he believed in the American Dream, he became one of the most successful businessmen ever. The American Dream isn’t just in life, take a look at the Great Gatsby, and how F. Scott Fitzgerald mocks the Dream by comparing the gap in social classes. F. Scott’s point and Tyler’s in the video is that looking at the upper class and their wealth is not a proper example of the American Dream. So for a European to dissect the Dream saying that it’s about flaunting wealth is completely wrong. The American Dream has always been about survival and making a better life for oneself.
