Comparing this to other interviews, this is the most lengthiest that Mihoyo did. Matsuoka just went full geek on this one (specially the puns) and his insight on Xiao's character is amazing specially the way he interprets and tries to portray the character's voice. Of course, whenever he tries to be funny, things don't end up well. Sasuga Harem King!!

Maybe..Xiao ate snow because it probably seemed like the most enjoyable thing to do during his suffering. Snow is pretty and soft when it piles up and since Xiao didn't know that snow isn't edible he thought he could perhaps "devour" snow instead of other people's dreams to make himself feel somewhat at ease and partially free himself from his guilt. Overtime this became a weird habit, that's why he continues to eat snow till this day. edit: that's just my theory tho, I don't know if it's actually true

I actually got a little depressed when I was subbing as I learnt more about Xiao. I decided to cheer myself up a little and listened to "Let the Wind Tell You", a collaboration song with the CN Genshin voice actors. Kinsen (the amazing CN VA for Xiao) sang this line: "If you find yourself clinging onto the past, reluctant to move on, I shall quietly remember these poems in my heart." I don't know why but I cried a little.

​@@kameliyazh I think the ENG side of the fandom in general is just very quick to turn characters into a single trait. For example, Zhongli is basically just dumbed down into "broke god of mora" even though his personality, ideals, and motivations are fleshed out really well in his character story and in the main quest. The significance of Rex Lapis retiring to live a mortal life when he literally could not open the Memory of Dust (likely requiring an understanding of mortal/human life) may as well not exist. Same thing goes with Venti tbh, he's just made out to be the "broke anemo god who likes wine" I feel like Xiao's ENG voice fits his personality still, just focusing on a different part. CN/JP Xiao reflect his gentleness while ENG Xiao reflects his extreme tendency to push people away to "protect" them from his karma. ENG Xiao still has some really good lines that show his softer side but like. a lot of people don't bother looking past his surface-level ""anger""

@@blaiddyd ooh, i’ve never thought about the second part, but it’s a good point! it always amazes me how characters can just be viewed differently completely depending on how the voice actor chooses to portray them. but yeah i do wholeheartedly agree that the eng side of the fandom tends to do this a lot - i understand a lot of the things that get lost in translation but there’s so much lore around the characters and teyvat itself in game that i wish people took the time to read and gain a better deeper understand of; it’s made it me appreciate the game even more tbh, and it sucks when people only choose to see things as they appear

its so nice to see yoshitsugu matsuoka talk about xiao so passionately because i feel the same for xiao. pre-release i remember just looking at a bunch of beta test videos of genshin and saw xiao and immediately went, "wow i need to pull him".. started playing and waited patiently for xiao (got lucky and won 50/50, and won the pity on weap banner and got his signature weapon). i've never been so attached to a character ever and i think mhy has done such a good job at adding so much depth and personality in each and every one of their characters. i cant wait for the next lantern rite where we could possibly see him again.. and i hope they add another story quest with xiao in the future.

still waiting for a xiao and zhongli interaction in game, because to xiao zhongli is the one who saved him so he loves and owes his life to him, it would be nice to see how different he acts around zhongli. and the master / servant dynamic is interesting. especially that it seems like according to zhongli, he doesn’t condone of xiao still fighting demons due to his enormous guilt entertwined with his thankfulness to zhongli. it was said in xiao story quest that he actually does not have a contract with zhongli to protect liyue, he does it purely out of gratefulness. but there is also xiao feelings of “repenting” and “ retribution” for what he was forced to do in the past. most interesting relationship in genshin to me.
