💬Plot summary:
Fan Xian grew up in a small town by the sea with his grandmother, following a sudden visit of a poison master, his peaceful life quickly morph into one filled with danger and hardship. That scene was exquisite, but I was not raised learning Chinese poetry, so although I thought the poems were gorgeous, I could not have the same insight “every Chinese kid” would have. These poems Fan Xian recited are very classic ones, everyone in China can recite them because all of them are on our middle school & high school textbooks.

Zhuang Mohan's quote about it is fortunate that Fan Xian clear himself saving Zhuang from a life time of regret. This really show his character. A lot of people in Joy of Life do things due to circumstances. Some have more conscience than others. But they are but humans with their own blind spot. You don't necessary have to think too hard to identify with them.

Really nice, the writer gave Fan Xian a lead by letting him overhear the convo but it isn't without a cost. This gave him some trouble with the Commander of the guards. And give conflict to the story but also move the story forward. Masterpiece. In comparison, those literary devices in which Jin Yong used like when he had the protagonist overheard all the plots reveal to him in Legend of the Condor Heroes. Feel so much more simplistic compare to this. The protagonist was a passive observer with the psychological battle of whether to intervene or not. But ultimately he is a passive player, in this case Fan Xian is way more assertive player in the plot.

The choice of the first poem was pretty deliberate by the writer. He pick the best of the best poem because Fan Xian wants to teach those people at the recital a lesson. But indeed Mr. Zhuang was correct pointing out that the word choices is not that of a young man but someone who is aged, tired with the up and down, twist and turn of life. Gray at the temple. You can see what’s the different from Untamed. You can not even compare two movies. Most chinese costume dramas won’t really start until ep 20 or 25. Untamed is like that. But not this drama. Well he already claimed to everyone that these poems aren't his but from a world that they don't know, however nobody believes him. These poems are so popular in China that almost every educated person has heard of them, but in this world even though they all wear similar clothes and have a similar culture to the original Ancient China, they are lacking the depth and wisdom from these poets. Zhuang MoHan seems like an idiot when you get to know the brilliant poems from real masters, but people in Qing(庆) and Qi think he is smart and talented. I personally feel sad for them, maybe Fan Xian thinks the same way. He recited the popular poems from his home world, but these people rather believe he made all of these than this is from a more complex and depth culture. That's why he ended his show by "no acient before me and no newcommer after". Originally this poem was made to express the loneliness (physically and mentally) when the poet was on top of a high building, but when he used it here, it also shows Fan Xian's loneliness in this world. (Sorry for typing that much! Just trying to analysis Fan Xian from a Chinese perspective)
