I think it's both and even though it might seem inappropriate to us I think it's also valid to cry because she lost her heir. It must be such an awful situation for her. Of course women in general were pressured to have male children but as an Empress the pressure on her was heavier than on any other woman in the Empire. Even the people closest to her constantly pressured her- the Emperor gave her grief over bearing a legitimate heir, her mother gave her grief over bearing a legitimate heir and Sulian was also constantly harping on about it. When did that poor woman ever have a moment's peace in between the death of her first son and the birth of her second son? She was actually lucky enough to fulfill everyone's expectations twice but in the end she still lost both her sons. The second time around she was even told that because of his fragile health she must be extra careful in raising her son for the first ten years and that she would be unable to conceive again- just imagine what it would be like to live with that kind of anxiety for ten years! And then she lost him like that and has to be subjected to the endless gossip of the entire kingdom. She knows that people will consider her a failure, an "unlucky" woman who evidently isn't favored by the heavens because she couldn't preserve her children and of course she will be all the more afraid to lose her husband's regard now that she won't be able to conceive again. If you "failed" at the one thing you most needed to succeed at and disappointed all those dear to you, wouldn't you cry too?

Oops. My comment vanished. This is the second time I have posted on this series. The first was about artemisia. It is not true that Chinese physicians in the 18th century were without a treatment for smallpox. Since the 10th century, there was a treatment called variolation that was the precursor of the Edward Jenner vaccine. It was made from the pus of an infection and used either fresh or dried as a powder. Scratches were made on the skin, usually the hand, and the treatment was applied manually or blown through a hollow pipe that was about 6-8 feet in length. There would, of course, be a reaction but then immunity would follow. Aristocrats and royalty were well aware of this somewhat risky practice. The fatality rate was about 1-2% as compared to a death rate that could vary from perhaps 35% to 100%. This depended on many factors. Smallpox was greatly feared, not only because of the high death rate but also the scars that remained even after recovery. Obviously, anyone who prized beauty would be doubly fearful of smallpox. As time went on, knowledge of variolation worked its way west to Istanbul and Europeans often went to Istanbul for the treatment, which would be regarded as a preventative measure, probably less effective during an epidemic. In the context of this masterpiece, it would perhaps be recognized that any treatment that left a scar would be shunned. Also, with the prince being so fragile, it is likely the physicians truly would not have risked the treatment, or to use the phrase we are hearing so often: not have dared, but it was known so the option existed.

Altough we know empress wasn't the culprit of concubine Mei's child death, she was the mastermind behind the conspiracies that harmed and killed many concubines and royal heirs. How could she possibly not think that maybe there would be at least one person who held a grudge against her? Smart concubines had their ways to find information and investigate about past incidents. And also, it is known in the harem are greedy women who want the empress seat or the crown prince position for their sons and would do whatever it takes to achieve their goal. And not only harem women, ministers and oficials who support a court faction could manage to form a connection with palace maids and eunuchs to obtain information and even harm concubines, consorts or princes from an opposite faction. Did empress was so delusional or stupid to believe that no one would dare to harm her son just because of fear and respect to her?
@Winter7457514 күн бұрын
What did I miss, who were the concubines that the empress killed?
@kayland.5724 Жыл бұрын
I like to look at things realistically sometimes because it's fun to imagine what would happen if they did things normally. So: If I were Yanwan, I would explain to Ruyi why I did what I betrayed him. "Ling Yunche and I...I no longer feel the same connection as I did when we first met. My heart has moved on. My mother is also pressuring me to achieve glory this way." Something like that 🤷🏽♀️ then, visit Ruyi often, bringing practical gifts and a sincere heart. Then, explain to Hailan that I wasn't trying to seduce the emperor. I was afraid of what might happen to me if I refused his advances. This would hit the right nerve in Hailan and possibly earn her sympathy. Go to Luyun and explain the same things but mixed. Half the explanation given to Ruyi and half the explanation given to Hailan. Or both, but I try to cater to people's needs and feelings. Bring Suyun gifts for her children. Both practical and otherwise. Visit Ruyi when Hailan is there and explain in great detail what Yuyan did while I was in her service. When the emperor saw me in the gardens that day, I know I had the choice between my ex and the emperor. The best way to be filial to my mother, please her and appease her aspirations for me was to choose the emperor. Boom. Master plan. From a people pleaser
@Winter74575Ай бұрын
Ok so remember Yanwan doesn’t know that Hailan is suspicious of her because Hailan only told Chun and Ruyi that Yanwan is bad news 😂 Ruyi has never asked Yanwan why she decided to leave Yunche and I don’t think Yanwan actually owes her any explanation because The Emperor is the head of the Empire, Not Ruyi. What Ruyi should’ve done though is pulled the emperor aside and inform him that this Yanwan is already in a relationship with a palace guard instead of not saying anything and then on top of it , still got Yunche a promotion working directly with the emperor, that was shady of her in my opinion.

1. Hypocrisy! Talking about happily deceived, don't break their heart. *Clown emoji*. Ruyi wasn't singing that tune when she found out about the bracelets the Empress gave her. No double standards. People have to pay attention (and may need to rewatch some stuff). Quick recap. 2. Consort Jia was the mastermind for EVERYTHING (especially killing the babies). She wanted her child to be the favored first born after Hongli's ascension. Hui helped to frame Ruyi with Sulian. Sulian is the evil servant led by the Empress' mother to do things without her master's knowledge. A'rou was the main goat needed to add to Ruyi's coffin. The Empress just had the authority Hui and Jia needed to make things legit. 3. The Empress was played into thinking Ruyi was guilty and was just too eager at the chance to get rid of her. She only wanted Ruyi dead when Noble Consort Hui said that Ruyi cursed the Second Prince to death. Poor her, being blamed for everything, the ultimate indirect fall guy for Consort Jia's MANY schemes. No one has peeped, which is why everyone in the comments is blaming the Empress. 4. I feel for Yanwan (but no excuse for her actions). Hongli initiated things and she only reciprocated. She just wanted a better life but suffered so much causing her to make the wrong choice. A cornered dog can get irrational, develop a whole new way to survive, even becoming ruthless to the point of self-harm.

Further analyzing yawans character she was just gaining her self a better life. Her family wouldn't even allow her to be with the guard and given the circumstances she has suffered and endured so much. I'm kind of disappointed in Ruyi for only siding with the guard because he is heart broken. All yawan afforded was being a maid tossed between different departments and they weren't actually together. Ruyi has always loved the emperor and was pampered along the way even being chosen as his third wife. Yawan didn't get that chance from the beginning. Ruyis privilege allowed to make "right" choices. She didn't have to choice between having a fortunate future or marrying a low level servant to survive. That is what's clouding her judgement. She doesn't realize because everything's been handed and set in stone she had the luxury to be with the one she truly loved. You can clearly see yawan still loves him and sort of regrets her decision. This is isn't a simple circumstance.

You make a fair point. Ruyi is very privileged in terms of not having to worry financially for her marriage, especially considering that she is a woman who might not have had a well-paying job if she was in Yanwan's shoes. That being said, it's not as if Ling Yunche would not have been able to figure things out with her. He said as much. He wanted to work it out with her, make ends meet. And Ruyi would definitely have been willing to help them if need be. Yanwan does learn to regret later on in the series...and shows her true colors that way.

I would love the story with him and these women from his perspective because it must’ve been really hard for him dealing with so many girls/women, half weren’t even mature or attractive but because of alliances to help keep control the population at the time, he had no choice but to be with some of these women/girls. I’m so happy he got deluded in the end and the Empire went to doom by the end of his reign.

This story about the ancient dynasty in China is very complicated. Women in the harem fight for favor, there's of course jealousy, backstabbing, scheming and never ending intrigues. The thing that a lot of the characters keep misunderstanding about Ruyi is that she isn't in the palace for her maiden clan, power, wealth, or status. The reason why she was there was because of the Emperor. It was because her love was there. That's why when Wei Yanwan tried to give her maiden clan as an excuse for her choice, it obviously did not resonate with Ruyi because her life goal was to be true to her love. However, I can't completely blame the other concubines for not believing her too. I mean I am pretty suspicious of people too and I think that is a trait that many people carry. If someone like Ruyi comes along, I would also be suspicious of her as well. Her goal is just too pure and innocent that all these other concubines are unable to comprehend and believe.

In the previous dynasty Ming. There was an assassination attempt on the life of an emperor by a maid. The emperor was cruel to many maids and concubines so when he tried to bed this maid one night, she just snapped and tried to stab him to death. When Qing dynasty took over, they developed this practice to clean and check on the ladies before delivering them to the emperor to deter any more assassination attempts.

I think it's also that a servant wouldn't easily be believed without iron-clad evidence and also as a servant you never know if the Emperor would actually do something about it or sweep it under the rug because your confession doesn't fit his political machinations and then you would be collateral damage that is easily killed. The Emperor covered for the Empress many times because he didn't want to compromise the reputation of the imperial family.

Wife selection is so stupid. How would you know, upon meeting someone for the first time or a rare few times, whether they are suitable for balancing the managing 7-10 households at the same time while managing their own? HongLi knew QingYing longer, so he was aware of her temperament and her unshakable resolve and character, so naturally, she would be the one HongLi chose. The late Emperor was a badass and good Emperor, but he made a bad judgment call by removing QingYing's chance as main wife. If QingYing performed badly, she could always be deposed or locked away like her aunt. Lady Fuca was too swayable to her mother and impressionable to the manipulations of Jia. She crumbled under the pressure of the role and succumbed to the enemies she accidently made in her zeal to protect her Empress status from a nonthreat(Ruyi).
@Winter7457514 күн бұрын
He was actually with Fuca before Nara, plus Nara is supposed to be 7 years his junior so episode 1-4 makes no sense, when he was 14 she was only 7 years old. He married Fuca when he was 16 Fuca was 15 and Ruyi would’ve only been what 9 years old. They messed up big time with this fake storyline because it’s impossible for them to be teenage lovers when it’s even mentioned in the series that he’s 7 years older than Nara He married Gao and Ruyi 1734 1 year before he became emperor he married Fuca in 1727, which means Fuca had gained lots of experience running a big household at their Bao residence because as a prince Hongli had some of the concubines which he took with him to the palace when he became emperor, including the newly added Nara who was 18 at that time.
