Quin Belbon: No; hatred and love are both passions. She’s been passionate all her life, while maintaining her quiet dignity under her own husband’s distrust and accusations, and maintaining the royal household under contention and mortal fear that he has been sowing. He had in her a companion who was ever whit his equal, and who would have seen him through all of his life, and worked tirelessly at his side. But where he once paid her in love, his remuneration for her is now anger and entitlement, while expecting her to maintain their relationship alone, or worse, while he actively undermines it. She’s exhausted, and he has descended into debauchery; and asserts that debauchery is his right, and therefore her obligation to accept, while insisting that everybody else comport themselves at the highest level. He is beyond reasoning, and has been beyond capacity for love for a long time. She is cried out, and her reason falls on deaf ears. What choice did she have? They are at a crossroads: she tries one last time, although she has already mourned the loss. This is the very last attempt she has left in her. His once- sharp intellect is too degraded to comprehend his position, and his heart far too hard. She has grown, while he has degenerated. They aren’t even peers any longer. This is what the hypocrisy of midlife crisis looks like in a man who believes himself to be beyond anybody else’s capacity for re-dress, and thinks that the people who lovingly and willingly give the most for him, owe him. He’s put himself on a second crucial cross road in life, as a direct result of his handling of the first. The question is, whether he will choose to acknowledge and address it, or whether it will address him. It might will be one of the reasons for which in some societies, a man was expected to put aside a sum of money, a “bride price”, that was intended to show his ability and intention to be there to support his family, or to provide security in the event that he would cease to be there to provide for his wife and children. It hasn’t changed since then; just ask anyone whose spouse has left him/her holding the bag. I can hardly wait to find the next episode!

That look back over the shoulder from the princess with true regret and sadness is such a nice touch to the scene. Especially when compared to Wei’s reaction who’s having to hide the fact that she’s clearly thrilled. The princess had been backing Wei the whole time just because her mother couldn’t stand Ruyi for being her fathers first choice of wife and empress and then when she realized what losing Ruyi actually meant to her father she had an “oh shit” moment and realized in her blind hatred for Ruyi she was unintentionally responsible for breaking her fathers heart.

Men writing women in history ☹️. In a similar fashion, many historians speculate the motive for this incident as jealousy. Though real empress was queen for fifteen years and was in her forties then, spending her life in the harem for nearly thirty years.Jealousy would’ve washed away by then but that’s what they believed,since women’s perspective was always dismissed to be unimportant, uninteresting or irrational, as always.

I've watched the Story of Yanzi Palace before finding this drama. It's amazing how a single, simple action can be interpreted so differently. In Yanzi palace, the empress was clearly a deranged and borderline insane woman who clearly had no hope left and her cutting her hair was as her very last resort and intense as if she cut her own throat. Here, Ruyi was so calm and collected. Her every move was graceful and elegant. When she cut her hair, it was a very strong yet gentle message. Instead of being hopeless, the audience could clearly see that this woman wasn't giving up hope, but instead freeing herself

I kinda like this probably unintentional touch of how Ruyi OFFERS her cut hair to the Emperor, almost like an olive branch. She’s holding it out to him and explains quite succinctly what it means and almost offers a chance for the Emperor to accept the break up gracefully. But he ends up calling her mad and took no responsibility for how his actions drove her this far, so she drops the hair like it’s trash. She doesn’t tip her hand or let it fall away by itself. She holds it by two fingers almost like she can’t bear to touch it anymore and drops it in front of his eyes. But I’m probably looking too much into it.

@@kateli1880 but even women from noble family naturally will fight and secure their positions because they know even with their backgrounds, they can be promoted or demoted as far as good/bad their playing or framing... Your clan can affect your first status as emperor's wife, but your clan can be affected by your up/down rank... Ruyi's clan maybe doesn't really matter with her become empress since it's crippled before she married hongli... But if not, her clan will also push her to fight for title... That's like Fuca clan that ever push langhua in every her step even to 'fight' with niohuru clan (empress dowager clan)... Empress title doesn't affect ruyi because of ruyi's character herself... I was sooo sad for Ruyi who loved sooo deeply,enduring all the hurt and drama the emperor caused her but she stood so loyal and faithful by his side and yet he still doubted, suspected her, hurt her and she STILL loved him to the very end. Kind of wonder how true this lies in Chinese dynasty history. Was emperor Qing as cruel and selfish as the drama series portrayed?

This drama made him loom too kind. He had 1500 concubines and played with their lives almost as much as he played with their bodies

Wow. I'm watching this because I recently got a divorce. I actually had my hair cut. It's nice to relate to what Ruyi did. My ex was similar to how the emperor became into.

This is the only Period Drama I can't rewatch because of the hate that grew watching Hongli treat QingYing that way. From the moment she became his second wife, she was mistreated, schemed against, and bullied, yet she stood strong for him the entire time, only to have him become a selfish, narcissistic jerk. I wouldn't have cut a strand of hair though, I'd have shaved the lot off!

Ruyi through the whole entire drama was very patient with Hongli. If it was me I would've been done a long time ago. Ling Yunche's death would've been my last ounce of patience. I would make sure Hongli regrets everything and left with nothing but all the bad memories.

Even FuHeng who is Langhua's brother also said, it is right and normal for the Empress to look for the Emperor. He was also aghast that the Emperor had all these brothel girls on the boat to entertain him. 😒😒😒

I felt heartbreaking and tear-jerking sorrow for the Empress. Living up your life to cope up with the responsibility of an Empress and it was all for a self-centered King who is always in suspicion for the woman who loved him, full of himself, obsession to countless women, and so on. I can't possibly understand the way it works in the Royal Places but geez I wouldn't dream of becoming these women. But of course, this is a series/movie and I am just thinking out loud. 🤞🤞

But this is true in China history, the emperor had a harem of beauties as young as 16 years old waiting to serve him. Some he never even visited before.
ha. every single women in the harem calculated him, his women, his mother, even his daughter. what zhen huan said is true, being an emperor is not that good. lmao.

Zhen Huan? Do you mean leading protagonist in "Empresses in the Palace" who also became current Empress dowager in this series?

@@keizelharf5393 Apparently. But she seems to be a different character in this series.
@alladinmoua4 жыл бұрын
@@keizelharf5393 Yes, Ruyi is the sequel to Zhen Huan. I remember many years ago when they announced that they will be releasing a sequel to "Empresses in the Palace" and how everybody was so excited to see it. As time went on and more information was released, everybody was surprised that actress Betty Sun would not be coming back to play Zhen Huan because the sequel was not going to be about her. Imagine the shock when we all found out the sequel was going to be about Empress Ulanara! It generated quite the buzz back then because Ruyi's aunt (spoiler alert...) was the villan in "Zhen Huan", but now the sequel was going to be about her neice! I remember back in 2018 a lot of people going into "Ruyi's Royal Love" with mixed emotions because so many of us older fans loved Zhen Huan (the dowager) and did not want to see her as a villan role in this part. Thankfully, Zhen Huan was not as hard on Ruyi compared to the other villans and most of us gradually got into the new character dynamics in this sequel.
