28:55 “I don't want the throne! I don't want to be the crown prince! I only want you, mother!” This is such a heartbreaking and yet interesting scene. Despite being raised by a negligent father and a greedy mother who probably didn't give him good moral education, at the end his true nature really shines through. The 4th prince is actually a good kid who doesn't care about power and pride as much as his mother and father. He's not sad about the fact that he lost the chance to become the emperor. He's only worried about his mother and sad that he's taken away from her. I believe he would have become an exceptionally kind-hearted and generous man if he was born in an average family, raised by a pair of caring parents. It's a miracle that he didn't become just like Consort Jia and/or the emperor who are two pathetic jokes of a parent. He and all the other princes and princesses deserve way better fathers and mothers (except Ruyi and Hailan's kids who have the best mums ever).

I know everyone is giving props to Jia's actress and she did a PHENOMENAL job, but can we also give props to the actor who played her son?!? That scene between the two after they separated was POWERFUL. I broke into tears when he went from prince to scared little kid asking for his mom. Only to turn around and realize he was being used this whole time. Jia's main issue was not realizing that she just needed to stop scheming on his behalf and let it go, he probably would have become crown prince anyway. You can clearly see, even at his young age, he's WAY smarter than her when it comes to courtly intrigue and how it can backfire during their conversation before she gets demoted and locked away. He literally BEGS her to not try stirring sh** up anymore.

Sometimes (usually when he's with Ruyi), his good side comes out. He clearly loved her for a very long time before he started acting the way he did. Those moments of clarity when he calls her Ruyi or sheds a tear in front of her. Or when he told Consort Ling not to learn the opera for Over the Wall; he didn't say much more but it's obvious that he wants to keep that between them because it's special. I wish he hadn't destroyed her records. Then we'd at least know what the woman looked like

In reality their relationship might've been way less romantic. We know Ruyi had the emperor's favour a few times in the period that she was in the harem. But she also fell out of favour really hard. Removing one's existence from history would usually be one of the biggest punishments a person can get. Because even if someone did something bad and had to be punished, often their name and title were preserved to still make them look honourable for outsiders (so to preserve their and their family's honour). But what the emperor did to the step empress makes it seem that he really lost all respect and consideration for her.

Poor Youngcheng... He's just a pawn on his mother's game. It's a good example of those situations when the parents manipulates their children in order to get away with what they want after a divorcie, for instance. The poor kid, being away from her for a while, doesn't even thing about those calculations anymore. Lots of people judge some children for being manipulative, and they don't put on consideration that they're just repiting the lessons from their parents, and want them "to pay" as an adult.

These days people call friends like her creepy. Extremely loyal, but you do have to remind us not to hover or overstep boundaries, like Hailan tends to do sometimes to protect her sister. We are such worry warts. We find a friend that shows even a bit of kindness to us, and we will damage ourselves first before we let anyone hurt them. And this trait tends to backfire on us if the friend we've devoted to ever betrays us. It's borderline crippling, and the scar runs deep into the soul. We NEVER get over the grief(we also tend to blame ourselves: what did we do to make them want to hurt us?). Fortunately for Hailan, Ruyi is a good at reciprocating that trust. Friendship bonds like theirs are rare.

That's a good question 😐 Concubines selection was about getting the best backups but in the end it would have been useful to consider mental health while they were getting rewards titles. But it isn't a guarantee of safety, look at Shu Fei for example: she wasn't an evil person but the misdeeds of her fellow concubines and Emperor's betrayal litteraly drove her mad though she seemed to have a balanced spirit; Yanwan's just gave her the Coup de Grace. What's more, these women spend years stuck between four walls and their mentality varies over time, so even if they were to detect possible troublemakers in advance, there would be no less risk.

The way that I see this entire drama is that...if you live by the sword, you will die of the same. And this also goes for the present as well as the future just as it had went for the ancient past. And although, it is based off of some historical facts, you can still grasp at a complete picture of what life was like for everyone at the palace. In the end, we all learn that life is never a straight line and success in life is incredibly short if you take shortcuts to get there.

About 32:00 to 33:30, in response her son's question of why she and his Royal Mother and so nurtured him, Consort Yu explains she wants him to be an "extinguished" son to the Emperor. This is the word used in the English translation. I've watched the whole series a number of times, but this is the one word choice by the translators that really bothers me. (I don't speak anything except English) but I am assuming the word she is saying is "distinguished", which means he would be obviously excellent (even stellar!). But extinguished means to end something --- it could be as simple as putting out a candle to as serious as to end a life. Please correct this in the English translation if the above definition is closer to Consort Yu's meaning in the series.

The characters portrayed are all played by adults but It just dawned on me that most of these ladies placed into the Harem were probably in their late teens. Folks in there late teens & early 20's barely have a grasp on life yet but these women literally had to scrap for favor, carry the weight of their whole clans on there backs, stay beautiful & be at the whim of the man in charge. Back in the day it was normal to be married of at a young age but when you look at the tom foolery that went on back then it probably wasn't the best practice to adhere to. Quit sad the more I think about it. Edit: I would like to add, Jia character gives very much Regina George energy lol. She pretends she cares very little but cares about everything. She does crazy crap for an imagined slight against her from the other women, because she feels like it &/or when when she's aware of being to obvious incites others to do her bidding. A lot of the diabolical characters give this energy in this series. A bunch of adult women whom were never able to remove themselves from their teenage mindsets because that was the environment they lived in most of there lives without being checked.

It's Legend of Zhenhuan, here you can see the background story why Empres Dowager Niuhuru had a deep hatred with Ulanara women and determined to kill the previous Ulanara Empress. It would be clearer too, why she became this present personality. There is a good reason too why Ruyi doesn't hold deep resentment towards ED despite knowing the fact who killed her aunt. She understood well how the palace harem life is and she also knows well that no one in the palace harem can stay naive and pure forever. Those who is still naive would never live long, just like Shu fei. Everyone in the harem committing a grave sin would get the retribution sooner or later afterall. Although the punishment doesn't always directly related to the present sin, the punishment itself is never an undeserved one. Even Ruyi can scheme too, otherwise she wouldnt have been able to get out from the cold palace previously, nor expose the last devil before her own death came. No one of them is clean, but There is still a little difference between them. Some still have a bottom line in doing things and still have feelings and loyalty towards those close and loyal / sincere to them..., still can see the bigger picture of things... but some others are completely unfeeling and only love them selves... a mental case like Jia Fei and Weiyanwan. Ruyi had never wanted to get into palace and be involved in such pitiful life at the very start, but she was pulled into it and there is no way for her to avoid that. Even if she can turn back time and didn't come to the Hongli's bride selection, as soon as Hongli enthroned..he can still issue a decree to get her in anyway. No one can defy an emperor's decree, so she would have to marry him anyway eventually...because he just wanted her.

Yes there’s 2 infamous dowagers that got pregnant , it’s supposedly xuan dowager was the first official dowager in China had 3 or 4 kids with a lover when she was dowager and held power in state affairs, the second dowager is actually the mother of the first emperor of China , she had 2 kids with a fake eunuch but it’s sad they all got killed
