@@jaronyuriyh7931 Yuppp! It's not just address space either... I feel like literally every single instruction, subroutine or design paradigm ever introduced in an x86 chip, since the original 8086 in the 70's, is still being dragged around behind Intel in what can only be described as some kind of grotesque, bloated rucksack... leaving a trail of blood and pus along the way. There's some seriously *ancient* baggage with x86 that just *needs* to go... but with how fragmented the PC ecosystem is, I don't see it ever happening. Apple's M1 is the first thing to really make the PC industry think long and hard about it though, you have to admit.
@a4andrei3 жыл бұрын
As a hard-core PC user, the new Macs really impressed me. One of the reasons why this new chipset performs so well is because it uses hardware acceleration for a bunch of things. x86 CPUs have very general-purpose functionality, and the architecture itself is bloated and requires a complex translation layer to be able to decode x86 instructions. ARM on the other hand has a fairly robust instruction set which allows the CPUs to execute tasks more efficiently. Honestly, if they nail the specs and price on the 2nd gen Macs, I'm gonna get on board the Apple express. I avoided the current Macs because I never touch 1st gen stuff (and the video illustrates why). Excited for part 2!

Apple seems to have taken a similar approach for the performance on the m1 as they do with the A14 and A12Z on their other mobile devices. They focused on making the experience feel very snappy and stable which is absolutely the right choice on the MacBook Air, Base 13" MacBook pro and Mac mini. The key to adoption is getting average users to buy into the new hardware. Apple's approach of, "Meet the new boss, same as the old boss," will do wonders in this respect. These are, after all the most affordable computers Apple sells and are very popular with students, instructors and normal people who just want a nice laptop.

Apple has done an architecture change before. Experience helps. Microsoft has at times given a half-hearted effort to multiple architecture support, but has always given up. I ran Windows NT on Alpha, MIPS and PowerPC, and saw it running on Itanium. But apps? Not many. Even the relatively simple architecture change from x86 to x86-64 was supported but the full transition was long-delayed (as you alluded to "a couple of years") whereas Apple has been pushing everything to go x86-64 for at least 10 years and ISTR dropped support for 32-bit apps a couple of years ago (so it was a non-starter for Rosetta 2 to only support 32-bit). I've been watching for a moderately high performance ARM laptop for a few years -- must have the ability to support low-level software development while mobile -- and coming up empty until last fall. can M1 scale up? be overclocked?
@ikjadoon3 жыл бұрын
It absolutely can scale up. Everyone has a misconception that scaling up is hard. It's really not; the architecture is much harder. Intel scaled up from 2C to 20C in a few years; AMD did the same, going even bigger: 4C to 32C. Qualcomm has scaled up (2C to 4+4C). Apple has scaled up (1C to 4+4C). Literally no CPU manufacturer has had any serious problems scaling up. Is it easy? No. Core-to-core communication (ring? fabric? star? topologies) and cache coherency are maybe what are screwed up most often, but I just don't see anything else that would even be a question for 8C, 16C, or even 32C Firestorm cores on a single die. Apple, like Qualcomm + Arm + Samsung, has *already* done one of the hardest kinds of scaling: heterogeneous, with two CPU architectures on the same die. Aka big.LITTLE. AMD & Intel still can't put together a very good heterogenous die (Lakefield is a start, but it's hardly efficient). IIRC, leaks indicate an 8+4C "M1X" variant already, which would be ungodly fast. I can't imagine eight Firestorm cores, especially with their perf-watt.

@@JxcksonSF because Apple doesn't really cater to the poorest consumer. Windows cater to all, but they get most market shares due to cheap desktop/laptop configs.

@@DarkPa1adin exactly! Premium thin laptop segment is for sure going to be dominated by macs this year.

@@JxcksonSF only because they just sell premium thin laptops. I just hope Windows don't end up like how intel is now.

Wrong, Microsoft is simply toooo diverse, most industries and companies in this world still uses some versions of Windows and Microsoft has to support it, plus Windows still uses toooo many different chips from nvidia to Intel to amd. Apple only uses/used intel CPU and AMD GPU .

With Apple improving their chips every year on their mobile devices, is it realistic to expect the same with the M2/M3/M4? Or is the M1 going to the "X" series and have newly minted laptop refreshes every 2-4 years still? And what will this do to the longevity of their devices? Will there be slower upgrade cycles since they will be their own competition for the foreseeable future? Is this chip too good not to turn into a chip manufacturer? 🤔

I like the disclosure. Everyone at these big publications who review Apple products all happen to be Apple fanboys too so it is hard to get an honest opinion.

i foresee apple moving towards risc-v in the future years, there's some friction on reliance on arm and their closed source proprietary libraries; plus the move from arm to risc-v won't be nearly as big of a pain in the ass as the move from arm to x86 because they're both risc based architectures (x86 is cisc)

One of the reasons Microsoft keeps dropping the ball is because their engineers suck. They hire them based on test performance, while Apple hires their engineers based on experience and accomplishments. Testing has been shown to eliminate the most creative and brilliant engineers.

Is this from first hand experience or an anecdote? When you mention engineers do you refer to software engineers or hardware engineers?

Given the reliability and serviceability of apples last couple of years of products. I'm keeping the Intel. At least i can replace my battery and keyboard or anything else. Give it time i think intel\amd will get caught up. its good competition for them. one thing to take into consideration is that if you have an x86 you can run software all the way back to the early 80s with out emulation.

Intel and AMD commissioned MS to make this excuse of a computer so that the world can see how bad are ARM based computers. While none of the 3 companies mentioned above were able to produce anything that fits the mobile part of computing.
