I actually have a suspicion that this act is exactly why TT fell (literally) for the big trap soon after. If they met zero resistance coming into Aeor, that would have made them more cautious. It's Aeor. Even the weather wants to kill you. If it was too easy getting in and those rangers got spotted at all but didn't engage, that would have been a huge red flag. Since they were attacked at the entrance, they likely assumed that was all the resistance they'd see until they got inside Aeor proper. I truly think that without Fjord's decision, Lucien would have used his eyes to see and dispel the glyph that triggered their demise. Simply put, I think steamrolling those rangers made them cocky.
@Oddricm
@Oddricm 2 жыл бұрын
There were also three undead giant guards that were dealt with when the M9 entered. If there were no explanation as to why those giants weren't there anymore, aka the rangers having killed them, then I suspect the TT would be more on-guard.
@TitoMcFadden
@TitoMcFadden 2 жыл бұрын
@@Oddricm That's a really good point I had not even considered. Yeah, not having the rangers engage would have backfired horribly. Lucien was no dummy. Dead giants but nobody in immediate sight? That's an ambush waiting to happen. If they were expecting the ambush, the glyphs would have been spotted simply because they would have moved slower and more cautiously. I don't care what anyone says, Fjord made the tough but correct call.

This moment is just bone chilling. Watching Fjord wrestling with the responsibilities of command and the weight of the choice between saving the lives of the rangers and Dagon but possibly ruining the trap or sacrificing the rangers and Dagon - at least temporarily - in the hopes that their trap will not be compromised and that they might actually get the last bit of their rest in was so chilling. It's like the best wartime movies where the commander knows that no matter what there's going to be a sacrifice and they have to live with the painful knowledge that they have, in effect, made the choice for some of their men to die. The animation here carries that so well and I love it.
@ashleycook6025

Very true. Fans (and immediately Sam) are giving Fjord/Travis a hard time, but knowing that every moment, every hit point counts, he makes a call. This isn't just about a trap though; it's about every advantage they can get to save their world. Fjord doesn't give this order without being willing to be there himself, not to save his own skin, but because it must be done and he can not be the one to do it. He WILL feel the weight of this choice for the rest of his life, and many, maybe even members of the Nien, will hate him for it. Ultimately though, there was no right or wrong decision. Buying your troops more time to prepare can mean victory, and it's not uncommon to throw unqualified, ineffective soldiers at an enemy to slow them down like living caltrops so the more specialized fighters have a better chance, it seems selfish and cold but it's a reality of combat and war. I know that now they still experienced defeat, it will weigh on him terribly. The Nien especially need to live and make it back to Exandria if they end up going to the ethereal planes; no one else is going to defeat U'katoa, who is also still a very real threat.
@mateochavez8455
@mateochavez8455 3 жыл бұрын
It didn't really buy them any time, they didn't finish the long rest. It was a bad call. But I see what he was going for. And it was a bone chilling moment. I'm excited to see how Fjord deals with his decision, knowing that their sacrifice didn't work out the way he wanted it to.

"...of the choice between saving the lives of the rangers and Dagon but possibly ruining the trap or sacrificing the rangers and Dagon - at least temporarily - in the hopes that their trap will not be compromised..." This is VERY wrong. Telling them to engage IS what put the trap at risk. You really think after getting ambushed that Lucian wouldn't become MORE paranoid about traps and ambushes? To hide the trap best you keep your prey as UNAWARE of the hunter's presence for as LONG as possible. Telling the scouts to engage was like throwing up a flag saying "ENEMIES ARE HERE! BE ON YOUR GUARD!" But that aside, as Ashley Cook said his decision wasn't about the trap. It was about the long rest. But even that didn't even have an ice cubes chance in hell of succeeding.

@@mateochavez8455 What you're talking about is hindsight. At the time, Fjord/Travis was making a gamble in the hopes that it would give the party a chance to recover. It didn't pay off as he'd hoped it would, but he didn't know that it wouldn't and he made the call based on the situation at the time.

Huh. I just realized: This is exactly the sort of situation NPC's run into when a party of "Evil-Aligned" adventurers decide to show up and start ruining everything. A sense of dread. The 'correctness' of Fjord's call here aside, it was a really powerful scene, and said a lot about his character and ability to lead that he was able to make that choice, because he believed it would be good for the Nein. Personally I would say any damage the rangers dealt could have expended hit dice, spell slots, and maybe other resources, so the choice had value. Anyway great work on doing the scene justice. And so quick too!

Travis talked about this in the latest Talks Machina that he regret not asking for details before making the decision. His intension was to use the ranger to stall for time. Travis said he should have asked where the team spot the TT. If they were at the entrance, then there was no point to sacrifice the rangers. So we should all learn this from Travis as well. Always ask for details before making important decision.
@electricbluetiramisu3713
@electricbluetiramisu3713 3 жыл бұрын
Sometimes you don’t have the luxury of time when it comes to critical decision. The Tomb Takers legged it to another A site, collected another threshold crest and then moved that to the main Aeor location in 6 days or less. If they’re moving with that level of determination then those rangers have only one opportunity to effectively engage them since an ambush requires positioning that they would have already had in place and would have likely lost the use of if they relayed further details. The position was either already known or needed to be inferred. The passage of time in a D&D game can be a bit nebulous and needs to malleable so it doesn’t become too stressful but a tense situation like this would’ve lost its impact of Travis let himself fall into analysis paralysis that you just can’t always have in reality. Obviously you should always aim to make the most informed decision but sometimes the situation is critical and you have to take a risk and trust in your judgement

@@ShadowedKing one thing I do like seeing when people order others to take risk when they themselves are not the ones taking the risk. To me, it’s a case of “You made your choice, sure it was a difficult choice to make but it was a choice you made. Now suffer the consequences.” A lot of times, to me at least, these things are brushed off as “oh well, they knew risk. Not my problem.” but here we see consequences of it.

I don't think my lovable team could handle something like sending people to their deaths, and roleplaying the emotional impact that the decision would have. Maybe one day. :)

Nah Travis made the right call, for Fjord's character. This is exactly what Fjord would have done from what we've seen up-till now. He only cares about those extremely close to him. Dagon was a stand up guy, but all those Rangers were well trained and probably did do a "small" bit of damage. If not for their sacrifice, Kree might not have been the only survivor. (Lucien doesn't count as he's Immune)

Essek's hands playing eith the stone while he's talking to Fjord, he was clearly nervous when he asked him that question. I wonder if he regrets telling the rangers to engage (as he said many times before, he is responsible for the people at the outpost). I know some survived (like Dagen) and some are dead. Hope they revivify them after defeating Lucien. Even if they are NPCS with no faces they are still "alive people" in the game. Plus I liked the rivalry between the head ranger amd Dagen.

They would need to use Raise Dead which would require a decent amount of resources and that's if they remember it and dependant on how much time is spent in the Astral Plane where beyond a certain number they may need to go beyond Raise Dead which requires yet more resources. Its unlikely they'll be brought back. Fjord definitely did a bad in hindsight but made a choice from what he figured was a justifiable means at the time.

This is such a extremely powerful moment. The weight of what he just done affected Fjord so much in that moment. His whole story was one of the most enjoyable moments of season 2

I really do hope there are some serious repercussions to this. Don't get me wrong I totally see his reasoning, but still~ I think it makes Fjords character a whole lot more interesting, and it creates a unique dynamic between him and Jester now. I wonder how Jester would feel knowing Fjord sent men to their death. The group has all been lovey-dovey, and there has been no conflict between them since.. since Fjord argued with Caleb about the scroll? Perhaps I'm forgetting some hahah // Anyway the point is, it would be interesting to see the group split in opinion of Fjords actions. I wonder who would side with Fjord, and who would be against. Oh also, I love Matt

Ah yes, what a convenient way to avoid walking animation. Thank you, Shadowhand. You had the animators in mind! Anyway, I was so mad at Fjord at that point, considering the trip to where they were now didn't even take them more than an hour, and they were both cautious and encountered multiple dangers along the way. And it was entirely possible that, knowing this place was discovered, Lucien could have decided to find another way in. And then they never would have known. The entire plan wasted along with the lives of Dagen and the rangers. Side note, kind of hoped they *mild spoilers* ... didn't actually live, and there would have been consequences. At least Dagen, since he's the one they care about. But glad a bunch of them lived, anyway.
