Carol knew from an early age that she wanted to be a lawyer. She however hadn't counted on the power of a high school teacher who verbalised what she saw as "beauty but no brains" to almost derail that plan. She went on to become a lawyer, she got over those deep implanted words that almost became her. Or did she? Never underestimate the power of someone to try and write your narrative.

Hey Carol, my math's teacher told others and I who didn't get past the half mark to go tell our parents to get us flour and be cooking mandas by the road side,lol...Si I felt bad because I had been sent home for school fees and came back to find a whole topic on statistics had been covered and a CAT was glaring at me... Those words really made me hate the teacher and feel woiye for my self...I started flopping in math, I averaged at D but getting to fourth form I remembered I wasn't damn in Math and I put so much effort and passed my KCSE Math paper... Statistics ended up being my best topic even in uni. I wish to have practised in a statistic field....Teachers should know there tongues are very powerful.

wow! what a story. I can relate to this very much. One teacher used to call me ''macho red, she often told me you will end up selling mandazi'' . I once met her outside Kencom 30 years after I left primary school. To my surprise my entire body got swarmed with goos pimples as I looked at this old woman.

I’ve rewatched this one after watching the new one (Saved from Myself - April 2022), and it hit me that those watching 10 years from now might fumble with the hairdresser billions reference (he he). And the Maya Angelou quote is one to live by; it features in the most recent video too. Always a joy listening to Carole.

Oh wow... This brings fond memories of my high school math teacher Mrs Mwanthi. During a parents teacher meeting in first term form 4. She looked at my maths grades all through form 3 and they were all E’s. She looked me straight in the eye and said “This is not you. You are one of my A students in math and if you just believe in yourself and work, you’ll get an A in Math in KCSE. It’s like I was woken up. True to her word I got an A in math and the day the results were she said to me “I told you”. I’ve never seen her since as she left the school. She made a huge impact in my life yaaani.... she has no idea. I’m so grateful to her.

This talk has me crying because I was that girl too. Headmistress told me I would among to nothing after my beauty faded. I feared and failed math in high school because of that woman and avoided any career path that required it for me early years. Now as woman in the tech field with both an accounting certification and a computer science degree, I look back and know that there were many in my shoes that never made it because of those words. I was just lucky that I had parents who believed in me fully no matter how hard I fell. Teachers destroy lives on the regular when they are meant to nurture it which is sad. I absolutely enjoyed Carol's talk and can fully understand why she succeeded in spite of those words

Story of my life. Mine would make me stand in the class and ridicule me. The disappointment was that I was among the first two in languages and humanities. Funny enough good in sciences-chwm n bio but maths hapana. Wee-wee.....I have tried never to blame him but I see his contribution in my failing maths.

I had an almost similar experience. At some point in high school I lost my mum and I just lost all the guidance and focus. Was failing miserably. I remember in form 3 our maths teacher Mrs Akatsa told my aunt,"Sharon is beautiful but performs so poorly". Those words hurt so bad I never forgot. I wanna meet Madama Akatsa and show her my Masters Degree

Recently went to one of my sibling's academic clinic, he had drastically dropped in one of the subject... He later explained to me how the teacher had said something in class that made him lose some esteem and dislike the subject... I Tried making some sense to him that it's to his own gain to learn... Teachers need know better on what they say to the students

I know how it feels to come from top ten percentile to the bottom average. Why? Because it happened to me. And some seven odd years later we still talk about it with my form one desk mate. Funny thing though I needed up taking strategic management in campus which is an amalgamation of mathematics to predicts trends to set up strategies in order to prepare a response. Currently in sales and marketing actively and still using maths!! The damn thing never leaves. But hearing your story, maaaan! My mama has to watch this. I thank God she understood what was going on and kept encouraging me. This is a n encouraging story. Thank you.

I had a dream killer teacher too in high school who I really liked but didn't like me back. A European Finnish woman with squinty eyes married to a Kenyan man. She hated Kyuk students and openly favoured those from Western Kenya. Her name was Mrs Owindi she nearly wrote my narrative. Yet I was pretty good at her subject but she didn't like my personality. Then there was anther Mrs O something also from Western In primary school and one in my sons primary school class also a Mrs O something all were terribly harsh teachers with no compassion for their students. The one in my sons class made me return in the middle of my studies and move him to the US at the age of 4 years because she was so cruel mocking my son because his mother was studying abroad and asking him why he was living with his grandmother. She died soon after may she rest in peace. You're a smart lady and a great speaker yet your beauty rubbed your trwc her the wrong way. Shame on her!

All the subjects are important except that some of the teachers taken them too personal like we all have to be equal. We are born with unique skills and talents. Respect and dignity is more important when teaching. Human beings are diverse in their gifts and this has to be respected and appreciated. Not everyone has to be a mathematician or physicist
