Engaging the Public with Science at the Imperial Science Festival | Lab Life

This May the Patani Stem Cell team escaped the lab to run a stand at the Imperial College Science Festival in London. Each year thousands of people visit this incredible festival, which is a celebration of all things science, and researchers from across the UK get to show off what they've been up to
We were there, along with our friends from MNDa (Motor Neurone Disease Association) to talk about motor neurons, Motor Neurone Disease and stem cells. We had colouring in competitions, story books to give away and, most excitingly, a performance from Combination Dance Group, who we've been working with closely on a dance called Action Potential that explains how motor neurons work and what happens when they go wrong. MND is a neurodegenerative disease that causes weakening of the muscles and eventually death. Unfortunately there is no known cure for the condition but we're working hard to find one.
