Have you ever wondered why, despite medical advancements, heart disease remains the leading cause of death in the United States? With a staggering statistic revealing that 88% of Americans are not in optimal metabolic health, this talk by Dr. Philip Ovadia, a cardiac surgeon and the founder of Ovadia Heart Health shows a transformative journey triggered by the preventable crisis of a patient. Highlighting often ignored indicators like obesity and diabetes, he advocates for a fundamental shift-from treating to preventing heart disease. Drawing from personal experiences, including shedding 100 pounds, the talk challenges listeners to envision a world where proactive measures and seeking root-cause-focused healthcare keep individuals off the operating table. It's an invitation to rewrite the narrative and aspire to a future where heart disease is an avoidable exception rather than an unfortunate norm. After growing up on Long Island, Dr. Philip Ovadia completed an accelerated Pre-Med/Medical School program at The Pennsylvania State University and Jefferson Medical College (now The Sidney Kimmel College of Medicine at Thomas Jefferson University). He went on to complete a residency in General Surgery followed by a fellowship in Cardiothoracic Surgery. Dr. Ovadia has been a practicing heart surgeon since 2005. He has been married to his wife Shelly since 2010 and they have two daughters, Eva (12) and Layla (10). Starting in 2016, Philip started a journey to fix his health challenges, a lifelong battle with obesity and pre-diabetes. He successfully lost nearly 100 pounds and maintained that weight loss. Dr. Ovadia is now on a mission to help as many people as possible to avoid the need for heart surgery. He recently authored the book, “Stay Off My Operating Table.” Philip is excited to be returning to Jefferson to Redefine Possible and educate people to Feed Your Heart: The Secrets to Staying Off the Operating Table. Fantastic. I completely agree. I have eliminated medical conditions by following this advice. Can i add to the list..Eat less or smaller portions, eat less frequently (let your body rest from food) and finally fast. I fast 3 nights a week(by this i mesn i eat breakfast, big dinner and then relax and go to bed early (this allows me to have a fast 4pm to 7am). Its amazing how good your body feels when you rest from food..

Learning to assess and improve metabolic health seems like a vital step. Much better advice than the standard, "just be in a caloric deficit" in terms of losing weight.

That is 15 hours of rest. I do it too. Food can be very bad. I hope people understand the power of intermittent fasting, allowing the system to rest from the continuous processing and filtering of food.

I agree there should be much more emphasis on preventive care. I was diagnosed with PCOS and one of the symptoms is insulin resistance. I was also pre-diabetic but simple changes to my diet and of course, exercise, helped so much to the point where I don't even have to take meds for PCOS anymore. It absolutely works.

Absolutely agree, ,I was diagnosed 15 years ago as a type 2 diabetic. Unfortunately 6 members of my immediate family were also diabetic. Diabetic management has been extremely difficult but my shift to a lower carbohydrate eating plan absolutely minimum processed foods and moderate weekly exercise has saved my life as a man nearly 60 year's old. I'm in better shape now than my mid thirties and 30 pounds lighter. Stay well.

Thank you Dr Ovadia. I am 77, have been carnivore now for almost 10 months. My severe arthritis pain is gone, the hand tremor s that kept me from eating soup, or lifting my coffee cup for a refill are gone. My heart medication has been cut in half. I almost wish you had gone one step further and recommending a ketogenic diet, or even ketovore or carnivore. Bless you. Hopefully people hearing this or that were in the audience will research how you lost your 100 pounds and metabolic health.

@@barbaraeconomos4753I had quit eating soup and held a cup of coffee with two hands. I just assumed it went with getting old and never talked to a Dr about it. Seeing someone else last week with the problem made me suddenly realize I didn't have it any more. Definitely because of carnivore, as are the disappearance of terrible arthritis pain, etc.

Probably didn’t mention it because many of us are very healthy as vegans. He’s not promoting a diet but a healthy diet. He also said, “eat food that grows from the ground” which is vegetables. I’m 55 never been on meds, pain free and even had an inflammation test which was only 2 on the scale and I don’t eat meat. My cholesterol runs 150. I’m 5 10” 160 lbs. So carnivore is not for everyone maybe you.

Yes, that's so true! I've been vegetarian (with a bit of fish here and there) for most of my life but recently stopped eating dairy after a blood test showed higher cholesterol. I'm a cheese addict do thought it would be really hard. In fact, it was pretty easy and I feel the best I've felt in a good while! Simple fruit and veg is overlooked as a big key to our nutrition 🙏

Eating low on the food chain helps, exercise helps, but some of the risk is genetic and not impacted much by personal choices. Sorry. Look at the former President, who doesn't do anything to take care of his health. There are others who are active and skinny and still get coronary artery disease. Pharmaceuticals do have a role for some of us.

Probably the first doctor who I actually like and speaks truth literally from the heart. Having been in healthcare for 30 years and seeing a lot of death and healing, my question has always been why aren’t we, as a society, seeking preventative medicine? I don’t like medications although some are life saving. The fact that our food supply has been tampered with by the production companies and industry is very concerning. In foreign countries they buy the same products but the ingredients are different (less artificial or manmade) and more healthy. Why are we being poisoned? He gave wonderful advice on how to be and live better and longer.

Well done, heartfelt, credible. My only disappointment, due to censors, is he didn’t disclose that his whole food recommendations go beyond avoiding ultra processed foods, to personal and evidence-based successful use of a low carb way of eating being key to long term metabolic health for almost all people.

The fundamental problem is that the economic model is wrong. We pay an industry to keep us sick. We need to restructure the financial model pay them when we are healthy. We need to start by removing the drug industry reps from every doctor training college in North America.

I wasn't expected to live into my 60s because of my lifestyle..... Later, I had major heart surgery in 2016 after which I followed similar changes explained in this video. My life since then has completely altered. I lost 112 lbs, I got rid of my car, and last year, for example, I cycled 10340 miles, I run 5 miles a week, and I teach 6 hours of Tai Chi every week. I was 70 years old in Oct 2023, proof that what Dr Philip Ovadia says is true, particularly in my case. Maybe try changing your lifestyle....... it may just save your life

Dr. Ovadia, you have the manner and credentials to make people consider your message. The contradictory advice from doctors and media along with the perceived difficulty of taking personal charge of one’s health are difficult veils to pierce. Small changes, as you have outlined, seem to be the answer. You are answering your calling.

Education is so crucial here... it's really hard to motivate people unless they understand exactly what the meanings and consequences are and unfortunately because weight gain is so gradual you just get used to feeling the way you do, that sluggishness and tired all the time, that becomes what's normal to you and you don't think it's "that bad" until you're dealing with some kind of disease as a result

Been on carnivore diet for 6 weeks. First time in my 55 years that I do not have hunger even though I am fasting 18 hours a day. I actually push aside half eaten meal regularly and I cannot remember ever, ever doing that. I have been a food addict for every day I can remember in my life. This is so easy, so wierd, and I saw an interview with Dr. Philip Ovadia on Dr. Berry's youtube channel that really impressed me.

There's so much we need to learn about how what we eat impacts our health in ways beyond the obvious... but I do agree with some of the comments below about the role our genes play in things. My dad has always eaten whatever he wants and has always been so thin.

Couldn't agree more with what he's saying. Food has such an important impact on our bodies and just our energy levels from one day to another. Don't get me wrong I _love_ certain foods that I know aren't the best for me but I also know it's okay to enjoy things in moderation and if the rest of our diet is good, a whole pizza every now and then won't do much damage 😜😜

I really hope there's a shift soon towards how we perceive fast foods and over processed foods... often they're the choice because of convenience but there's nothing convenient about increased risks or stroke and heart disease.

Inspiring, however my question is as follows. I am 25years post open heart surgery (6x no-passes) I am on beta blockers and cholesterol tablets from day 1. I currently attend my gym for approx 15hours per week. Where I row 5Km per day, bench press weights, dead hang 1min per day, wall sit 5min pd, resistance & functional training 4hr PW, my question is: could I stop taking the pills? Resting heart rate approx 50pm

I have a very hard time with sleeping. It has been years since I can sleep well. I have tried everything and I don’t know what to do. Help! Have insulin resistance and had 4 stents put in my coronary arteries. Lost 13 pounds doing keto but have been off it for several months and having trouble getting back on again. My family thinks I am nuts to do keto but it is the only way I have been able to lose weight. And I was always skinny. HELP
