Classic 10 is almost dead now, if you won't contribute by either scoring goals, pressing from the front or dropping deep when you don't have the ball, you won't play. Ozil really is the closest I've seen to a classic 10 and he gets criticized for it.
@mattnorris71246 жыл бұрын
I think that's because he goes missing in games at times, especially when teams focus on overloading the central areas against Arsenal and when they don't try to play expansive football against them. Most of this comes from natural evolution of defensive structures and priorities to neutralize players of this ilk. I think the best way that Ozil has been used is as a "False 10" during I think it was the 2010 World Cup where he'd sit in the hole and create during attacking phases but then during defensive phases, push up alongside either Gomez or Klose to help press and force Germany's shape back into a compact 2 banks of 4.

I'm not so sure that an enganche is incompatible with modern defenses. Riquelme was put under a lot of pressure too, yet he managed to find a way out of many a hairy situation, often humilliating several defenders at once and creating space in the process, so pressing him was a risk as well. It is true that nowadays a number 10 is required to help in the defense as well, which hurts the enganche's role in my opinion. In fact when Riquelme arrived at Barcelona he was reportedly told by Van Gaal that he was the best player in the world when in possession of the ball, but when their team lost the ball it was like having one less player on the field. Which explains why he didn't get much playing time there.
@necromax137 жыл бұрын
brokenHelghan That's simply bullshit IMO, an excuse for a shaky defense. All the great teams in football, with no exceptions, have all attacked with 5 and defended with 5, if you require your creative attacker to go back and man mark, there's something wrong with your tactical positioning and formation.
@khoiduongminh51116 жыл бұрын
Victor the Kid In modern football, the striker is the first defender, and the keeper the first attacker. That is why you see sweeper keepers, ball playing defenders, and defensi ve forwards. Of course, some players are more attacking and are expected to move and press less, while some defend more/most of the time, but everyone is still expected to contribute. The inability to move/press/mark is now more of a disadvantage to players in an era where tactics squeeze water out of stone.
@Kafkaesque1175 жыл бұрын
This is so true, the enganche can't exist which is sad, but 10s have changed massively, players like Kroos, Oil, Messi etc have had to change their jobs within the 10 role. It puzzled me though why maradona played Messi as a enganche in the 2010 world cup, yes his team and Messi's performances improved because of it and got to the QF, but their inability to get the ball to him vs Germany was the best example of how the enganche's flaws have been exploited and the role nullified within the modern game. How Löw played Ozil showed how to play a somewhat modern enganche.

In the 2014 Germany squad they played a 4-2-3-1 but the midfielder in the hole (number 10) was more reserved. Kroos operated in the centre like a regular central midfield as him playing as a 10 doesn’t work. Plus if they ever had a number 10 Ozil would fit the job.

@@footballisbeautiful.4870 Messi in his prime, playing on the right wing, was best described as a Raumdeuter. He is king of dragging defenders out of position and making clever runs into unusual positions. Classic 10 doesn't really exist in modern football due to the fact many teams play with at least one defensive midfielder, sometimes two, which lowers the effectiveness of the 10.
In Argentina the engache is sacred. But when players moves to Europe, managers put them as strikers or in similar roles to Pirlo or Xavi. For example, Agüero was an enganche before he moved to Europe and more recently you have Paredes being MCD when in Boca he was form to be the next Riquelme.
@martinjuniors69737 жыл бұрын
In modern argentine football these tactics don't exist anymore, it's either 4-5-1 or 4-4-2 (4-2-2-2), with few exceptions, Boca being one that plays 4-3-1-2 or 4-3-3 with Centurion switching between creative foward (behind the striker) and winger, but there are no players like Riquelme, Aimar or Ortega anymore sadly. During the later years of Riquelme's carrer teams tried to nullify him like you said in the video, most of the time they couldn't do it, even when competing in Libertadores playing against the best teams of south america we got to the finals when he was 34 years old and with a ton of injuries, it's good to remember though, he won Libertadores 3 times before this. At the end It was his own age that limited him, and even then, he was still the best player of Boca when he decided to go to Argentinos Juniors (his youth team) and had a great season with Argentinos winning the B league and promoting Argentinos to Primera Division when he decided to retire. Riquelme was the last 10 of Argentina and in my opinion the best player I saw in Argentina, El Ultimo Diez.

Im argentine and this is all true. The enganche has mutated to box to box midfielder. The main difference is that they are asked to defend now. Football has be going to systems similar to basketball or handball, where all players attack and all players defend. It is much more dynamic, mucho more complex, and also much more demandating physically (thats why we have 3 changes per team in every single match while in the eighties or seventies that was an exception). Although, people in Argentina still play with enganche. It is soooo popular that in every amateur match people play with enganche. And in professional footbal too. That explains our failure in World Cups, we still think that at least one midfielder, sometimes two, must not have defensive skills. Thats why we dont have any box to box player. Not one. We went to last WC with Mascherano, who is defensive midfielder, and Biglia, (crappy player) both with more than 33 yo. We dont have box to box modern football players. We still think football as we used to 40 years ago, with the midfield in a shape of a rhombus, being one tip the enganche and the other one the defensive midfielder.

As a 90s kid this probably stems from Man utd of the 90s when Roy keane and scholes would rule the middle of the park with beckham and giggs in the die areas. Even cantona played as a 10. Zidane , gazza, Baggio, Zola and Rivaldo also come to mind ! Some very old football fans in their 80s, in Argentina and Uruguay, they say that there use to be many players in the 1940s who played like Messi does, in that difficult to categorize position. In that sense, they say that Messi, to certain extent Iniesta, to certain extent Kempes, but most of all Cruyff, were the reborn style of a type of player who had all but disappeared by the 60s.

I'm Brazilian and here the 10 refers to a different function, which can have more offensive characteristics or not, the main thing is to organize the game, like Modric, Iniesta, Pirlo, or Dribble and open spaces, like Neymar, Messi. Remember Pelé's pass in the fourth goal against Italy in 70, he arrives in a position to try a shot in front of the area, attracts the marking and passes aside, opening space. But putting Socrates and Zico as the same, many here would say is crazy. Perhaps the most "Brazilian" number 10 today will be Coutinho, but it can vary. Now, I gave current examples, because I was surprised to say that they are not less effective today.

Milan under Ancelotti played diamond predominantly, and at times 4-3-1-2. But never 2 #10s. Shevchenko always had a partner up top

4-3-2-1?? Typo?
@VituKhonje7 жыл бұрын
I think not. He mentioned one of the strikers would drift out wide "or into the hole as well." Technically with that last bit in the quotations, it would be a 4-3-2-1.

What do you think about Dybala's role in Juventus' "4231"?
@LiMai__7 жыл бұрын
I think its amazing how they converted him from a false 9 to an "Enganche" in Argentina which translates to hook in english basically meaning a CAM. He along with James Rodriguez, Ozil and many more are saving the position and keeping it alive.
@necromax137 жыл бұрын
Kan Raskall They're wasting him using him as a second striker/CF to Higuaín, this was clearly seen on the UCL final against Madrid. Dybala lacks the "thing" from the Argentinian 10s that allows them to never be marked, and give the killer pass. Now, if Juventus played him as a parallel striker, or as the first striker with Higuaín a few steps back...

Problem with a pure no 10 is that they are unfortunately limited in modern football as they become less effective when placed in other areas, the most effective no 10's i've seen are messi and hazard and they play out wide and have tremendous physical attributes which make it impossible to take the ball off them and also has a lot more mobility then dybala, ozil and james which makes them more valuable in modern football
@tathagatamukherjee57947 жыл бұрын
Atlast one of my favourite positions.😄 Do you think Dries Mertens cn Fit to this category?
@souradeepsengupta957 жыл бұрын
More false 9 than pure 10 though. He's one of the new breed of forwards who drop deep to link play and provide creativity, in addition to clinical finishing in and around the box. A 9 and a half maybe.
@tathagatamukherjee57947 жыл бұрын
yes rather BamiDelle Alli is more a pure skimmer and well adapted to that sort of atmosphere.
@souradeepsengupta957 жыл бұрын
They're all following the Messi model - fluidity and freedom to get away from man-marking, and space to accelerate and dribble away from intense pressing. Often these players tend to be played as wing-forwards to accomodate them into a 433. Other examples would be Eden Hazard, Alexis Sanchez, Ross Barkley, Paulo Dybala too to an extent, Marco Reus, etc. This is what a playmaker looks like in today's game as opposed to the languid style of Riquelme.

In Brazil people generally don't say meia-armador or meia-atacante, they simply say meia. That's the usual form. Since in brazilian portuguese people we don't have the term volante ofensivo, a volante is always a defensive midfielder, and a meia an offensive one.

In the world of football we have a few possible solutions to not being a able to play a classic 10 One such option is to play the same leicester city 4-4-2 in which jamie vardy becomes the defensive striker but when the ball is won The Enganche who does nothing defensively receives the ball and becomes static using his ball control and strength to keep the ball like Roman Riquelme allow the defensive striker and other players to go past him This style of play is for when you want to counter without necessarily risking losing the ball or being hit by a counter to your counter There is a place for the classic 10 There just need to be precautions Imagine if Liverpool who press decide to press the Enganche the gaps left behind will be utilised If the opposition try to mark out the enganche he can immediately become a trequartista and start roaming again leaving more space to run into in the end space can be created using classic 10 for the striker

classic 10 is not actually usable in football nowadays. it's a lot of pressure on one player.
@MasterAppels7 жыл бұрын
Most teams have one playmaking winger and a deep-lying playmaker which spreads the weight around a bit. Take Arsenal, for example, they have Xhaka/Cazorla playing deep, Alexis/Iwobi/Ramsey when he played there on the wings, and they played Alexis as a false 9 - taking some of Ozil's creative responsibilities off of him. And Ozil isn't a bad finisher, he just doesn't take enough shots.
@martinjuniors69737 жыл бұрын
I don't think is as cut and dry as that. Tactics in football come and go depending on the characteristics of the players.

Why take a 90% chance when you can pull off a 10 % chance pass that sets a teammate up with a 100% one =)?

felix winchester You know The Chilean National Team won it's first Copa América using a classic 10
@necromax137 жыл бұрын
felix winchester It's due to inneficient defense systems that rely on attackers and creators to defend, which they often do badly. Juventus with Pirlo depended on him, and he didn't defend, or make a Sprint forward or backwards. When a team is properly built around a playmaker, high or low, his accompanying box to box midfielders, or the 5, will fill up the gap, while the creator repositions himself.
