The dry hull is very thick and strong, made from 3/16" thick fiberglass with 1/4" thick lexan lids. It is a very solid, strong (and very heavy) boat!

Very impressive. The plexy also allows you to visually check compression on the seals, very useful mod.

Outstanding review. I worked on nuclear submarines @ General Dynamics Electric Boat Division for about 2 1/2 years in the late 70's early 80's. Worked both Trident and Los Angeles class types. Would love to get into a hobby like this, very interesting.

I sort of 'accidentally' stumbled upon this video, but enjoyed every second of it. A very clear and understandable explanation of your work, containg very ingenius modifications by yourself. I realy love both the idea of the clear polycarbonate top and that of the 'pressure pump leak check' system.

The kit came with all of the detail that you see. It is the MasterScale version from Engel of Germany. Missiles are a definite possibility and have been implemented successfully by other builders. Propulsion for them typically comes from airbrush propellant, which is basically compressed gas. I can tell you that from my experience with working torpedos, gas propelled missiles are easily implemented, though having them fly straight is another issue...

The periscope mechanism itself is almost entirely situated outside the pressure hull above the lid. The only penetration is for the motor shaft itself, which uses Engel's seal system composed of brass rod and tube with a silicone rubber sleeve over it.
@RCSubGuy
@RCSubGuy 10 жыл бұрын
Engel sells their gasket material on their site. Its basically rubber rod. Just set it along the path you need and silicone it down in place, making sure that its secured well. Plain old silicone works well, too. Spray the bottom of your lid with mold release agent, or use vaseline along the face where it will Lay a good bead around your seal area and then press it down gently on your silicone. Let it dry, and voila! you have a seal that is perfectly formed to your lid!

I always wanted to build an accurate as possible model of a German u boat with the ability to submerge at will and fire working torpedoes. I worked in ship yards for years and even worked on a few subs. The hull is insanely complicated and it's amazing to me what these machines are built to withstand. The modern nuclear submarine is made to contract so much that a clothes lines tied taught from one bulk head to another on the surface will be lying on the deck when fully submerged. My plan was to weld up the hull out of aluminum panels but when it came to making an actual firing torpedo that will load, fire and actually strike something and explode I was in over my head.

These boats need five channels minimum to operate: throttle, rudder, dive planes, ballast and ballast trim. Extra features such as the bow retracts and periscopes add additional channels. I was running seven on this particular boat. There is no reason you couldn't upgrade to brushless. Just bear in mind that you'd need to run a gearbox which increases complexity. The ones in this kit are actually quite efficient and run times of 2hrs are perfectly achievable.
@RCSubGuy

A little vaseline certainly won't hurt, but if I'm not mistaken both Engel and OTW recommend against grease on the orings. Grease tends to trap dirt and other particles and can lead to leaks if not kept clean. I usually keep mine grease-free and just ensure that the seal faces are clean and clear of contaminants before I tighten it down.

You'll be looking at around $3K with delivery from Germany for the kit. You've still got to get it together and buy a radio system for it on top of that. Not cheap, but its a beautiful kit worth every penny!

in fresh water you can get about 20 ft deep and still ain't a in control, however any contaminants in the water such as minerals, chemicals, and especially salt will reduce that significantly.

Hey *RCSubGuy!* Here's an idea: build the *Red October!* Here's how: ·parts 1- 1:100 Typhoon rc sub 2- two hydrojets (google rc water jet engine) 3- mesh screening to place over jet intakes in order to prevent F.O.D. (Foreign Object Damage: a mechanic's way of saying your engine swallowed something it shouldn't have) 4- doors that open and close in order to cover the jet intakes and exhausts, to maintain hydrodynamic efficiency when operating on just the screw propellers.

You can buy it from Engel out of Germany. With shipping to the US you'd be into it for over $3K, and that's just for parts. Double that to get it put together by a reputable builder for you, or allocate a good month of steady work to get it built, especially if you haven't got much experience with RC subs. DEFINITELY NOT recommended for beginners!

I want to start with this hobby, but I don't know which submarine to start with. I have experience at building rc scale model ships. Now I think I have to go with an engel modell(there are really no other sub. kits wich are considerable for me). So there's the Typhoon and the Akula, which one is more appropriate for a medium level beginner? Time is not a problem. I have contact to an rc ship sailing club(I guess you call it like that?) if that matters. Id really like to hear your advice Greetings from germany 🇩🇪

That is a very cool submarine!! I was wondering if you could ever make it fire rockets from the missle tubes? Also, did you ever build a 1/100 scale of the Ohio class model sub, and make a video of it like the Typhoon? Very good video!

The Engel boat is a lot of work and your build time is a function of what needs to be done, but moreso your skill level. I'd say that you'll need to allocate between 100 and 200 hours to the construction.

wow, lots of channels, too cool. i didnt think about the battery capacity you were running. must be pretty high, im guessing around 5000 mAh? i get about that much time in my car. as far as the brushless, i wasnt thinking something like a Mamba Max pro. that would turn the boat into a torpedo and rip it to shreds. but a small brushless on a direct drive maybe? i dont know, i just hate seeing such a beautiful model with ugly 550 cans powering her. bling factor, thats just my opinion.

That'll get you close! It's all dependent on USD/Euro exchange (which is great right now!), desired features and builder workloads. You can also go with a simpler internal setup (which I would do myself if I built the boat for my own use), which would also save considerable cost.
