@@rafif549 The 1980's weren't ideal. That era *felt great in many ways, but appearance can be deceiving and feelings can be unaware. They were a lot better than current times, as far as we knew then, but there were a great many things we didn't know then, about the way the world (realm of man) worked. Things were going on then that we didn't know, things that people that study know now, that were in the shadows then. It was simply the earlier portion of the same trajectory that the world is on now. You know the saying about the frog in a comfy-warm pot of water? The frog doesn't want to hop out because it feels so great, but by the time the water heats up, it's too late for the frog, and he can't jump out.

Reminiscing the past often brings a sense of nostalgia, a yearning for moments gone by. Englebert Humperdinck's rendition of "Those Were the Days" captures this sentiment perfectly. His warm, rich voice takes listeners on a journey back in time, painting vivid pictures of fond memories. As the song plays, one can almost feel the presence of yesterday, engulfed in the comforting embrace of days that were simpler and perhaps more joyful. Englebert's music becomes a time machine, touching hearts and souls.

Once upon a time there was a tavern Where we used to raise a glass or two Remember how we laughed away the hours And dreamed of all the great things we would do Those were the days my friend We thought they'd never end We'd sing and dance forever and a day We'd live the life we choose We'd fight and never lose For we were young and sure to have our way. La la la la... Then the busy years went rushing by us We lost our starry notions on the way If by chance I'd see you in the tavern We'd smile at one another and we'd say Those were the days my friend We thought they'd never end We'd sing and dance forever and a day We'd live the life we choose We'd fight and never lose Those were the days, oh yes those were the days La la la la... Just tonight I stood before the tavern Nothing seemed the way it used to be In the glass I saw a strange reflection Was that lonely woman really me Those were the days my friend We thought they'd never end We'd sing and dance forever and a day We'd live the life we choose We'd fight and never lose Those were the days, oh yes those were the days La la la la... Through the door there came familiar laughter I saw your face and heard you call my name Oh my friend we're older but no wiser For in our hearts the dreams are still the same Those were the days my friend We thought they'd never end We'd sing and dance forever and a day We'd live the life we choose We'd fight and never lose Those were the days, oh yes those were the days La la la la...

Anyhoo, only commenting now bc i feel kind of bad. Initially i googled a line from this song & kept finding only Mary Hopkin. Never heard of her? Persisted since i definitely remember a man singing this. … yup! _This_ is the tune i was reminiscing. Ps Mary Hopkin did a fine job too but i could never get used to it, ya know? … bc i’m OLD.

"Those Were the Days" is a song credited to Gene Raskin, who put a new English lyric to the Russian romance song "Dorogoi dlinnoyu" ("Дорогой длинною", literally "By the long road"), composed by Boris Fomin (1900-1948) with words by the poet Konstantin Podrevsky. It deals with reminiscence upon youth and romantic idealism.

Just like Elvis' "It's Now Or Never" and "Surrender" are both classic italian songs but Elvis took them both to #1. Mary Hopkin's version of "TWTD" is the definite recording as that's the version that sold the song AND was recorded by her in several different languages AND went to #1 ALL OVER THE WORLD!!! You ask anyone who did "TWTD" and the answer will always be Mary Hopkin. Thanx

@humpyfan Mary had the big hit, that's right and everyone who names "Those were the days" would talk about Mary Hopkin (me too, I like her cover too) but she has performed it 6 years after these lyrics were recorded the first time, they were recorded by Gene Raskins Band "The Limeliters". That wasn't a hit, but that's another story. And I don't blame anyone who is singing cover versions. Engelberts version is a nice one too.

@mahmoudmms I did not state a definite recording date. I am taken an educated guess. I am sure of one thing though, It was never released on the U.S. (Parrot) or the U.K. (Decca) version of "The Last Waltz" LP. It did however appear on the 1988 German CD release of "The Last Waltz" as a BONUS track. So you could be right as far as being recorded in '67. In '88 and '89 Germany released Enge's first 5 LPs on CD and they all included bonus tracks that did not appear on the original LPs.

Though we called it quits long ago you know I"m still in love with you."... and ends with "while I'm holding your memory, he's holding you"..... The biggest music theft ever: Plagiarism brought fame and fortune, the real author died in misery. Stolen Russian song. Although many believe that it is a Russian folk composition, its author is known, his name is Boris Ivanovich Fomin, he was a Russian composer and musician, born on April 12, 1900 in St. Petersburg. The original name of the composition was "The Way Far Away", ("Dorogoj dlinnoju"), and the first performance was recorded by Tamara Cereteli (1925), but outside Russia the composition first became known in the performance of Alexander Vertinsky (1926) and most likely is that Raskin heard exactly that version. kzbin.info/www/bejne/baGnhayteL6Wa7s
