Very smooth, Alekhine is one of the most instructive on improving his position and exploiting weaknesses by playing "simple" chess! He is in my top 5 with Kasparov, Botvinnik, Fischer and Tal. P.D. Mato please review the Kramnik vs Buhmann game from Dortmund yesterday!

Hi Mato, could you give us a little more time after: "Please pause the video" and your next question? That would be great and support our active learning by first trying to find the right move. Your presentations are great!!

Absolutely brilliant attack by Alekhine..He could see hidden weaknesses in the opponents structure & exploit them ruthlessly..

04:02. I thought black Rook would take pawn on e3, and then (perhaps) push his pawn to f4.
@HeyKevinYT8 жыл бұрын
White rook would recapture the black rook. If black now still plays f4 (forking knight and rook), white knight would move the knight to e4 and attacks the queen.
@Andyson9868 жыл бұрын
Black Knight x e4 (forking King & Queen), pawn x e4, Queen x e3 check, King moves, Bishop x e4. If Bishop x on e4, Bishop x e4, pawn x e4, pawn x Rook on e3, check. Or just white Knight e4, Queen x e3 check.

That was quite prescient of Alekhine to play the "Spassky System" defense four years before Boris Spassky was born.

This time I saw the killer move, but only because Mato said, that there was one. It must be an attacking move, (probably with a piece sacrifice) and ne4 is such a move.

I'd say the turning point at which Engelen's position started downhill was 17. de5. That injected a lot of energy into Black's attacking setup. Of course, against Alekhine, it's generally not a good idea, to open the center, but still...!

@urdjur18 жыл бұрын
I don't understand why Ne4+ is such a killer move. Is white forced to take the knight with the f3 king pawn for some reason? Wouldn't it be less greedy to take back with the knight on g3 instead? When I paused the video, I considered Ng4+ instead. It doesn't fork the queen, but white can only capture with the pawn. If he moves the king instead, you can take the pawn at e3. Is this a bad plan? Also, thanks for your entertaining videos Mato!

@Watermelon_Man928 жыл бұрын
Mm. I tried sacrificing the other way (Ng4+ instead of Ne4+).
@Watermelon_Man928 жыл бұрын
(Alekhine's line isn't really a sacrifice but it's likely the best choice. I was trying to go 1...Ng4+ and if 2.fxg4 then 2...fxg4+ 3.Ke1 Rxe3 and White has complications.)

After 21. h4 Ne4, why was the knight captured with f pawn? Aren't _22. Ne4_ or _22. Be4_ better captures?
@Zodiac200038 жыл бұрын
Capturing with the knight loses a whole piece: 22. Nxe4 fxe4 23. Bc2 exf3 24. gxf3 Rxf3 (Computer reads 11 pawn advantage to black unless white lets black take the bishop with the pawn, in which case it reads 4.1 pawn advantage and black is a piece up) The computer seems pretty indifferent between pawn takes knight and bishop takes knight though.

No, it's not my one dislike. I never dislike Matos posts. He's far too funny and generous and I've learned at lot from his postings. He's clear and to the point, probably because he isn't hung up on ego. I only follow Mato and Jan Gustafsson Banterblitz, having long since lost patience with those who overestimate their abilities or simply talk too much.

Mato Mato, Why the pawn takes the K sacrifice! If the BxN then keep the file close. Taking the knight by pawn is allowing the black in better position.

Very nice game. Even though I am more intermediate player rather than expert, I consider Engelens move with the king towards the center kind of an obvious mistake in many ways. Firstly, I wouldnt count on such renown player as Alekhin to exchange pieces rather than complicating situation to find any positional advantage. secondly, putting the king in a line with rook when e4 is secured by 3 opponents pieces, this is just asking for trouble! Am i missing anything? I find it very surprising when top class players on one hand are able to solve very complicated patterns many moves ahead and they are storming forward when i would be too uncertain about the outcome, on the other hand they make moves I clearly see as obvious blunders.

engelen did a big present to alek with this wrong important moves
@Hallands.8 жыл бұрын
Well, Engelen starts loosing the game rather early! 4 Nf3 is the wrong horse, as Alekhine obviously will play Bb7! This horse will, instead of participating in the control of the center, create a bind on either his queen or his wh sq bishop until the diagonal is blocked. He then seems to forget about this problem, thereby inviting an attac on the king. This poor understanding of the centergame - confirmed later, when Engelen has the opportunity to block Alekhines wh sq bishop on two occasions - is the beginning of the end. Kf2 is a Hail Mary Move and h4 is hopeless. Alekhines Ne4 is fine, but it is not THE killa move, since f4 is stronger. But no matter, at that point anything sensible wins for black...
