Love the s160s, one of the few American steamers we can see in the UK!

I am soooo happy to see these types of restorations. Nobody but the occasional excursion British steamer is built new these days. Every worthy candidate for restoration should at least be sheltered and saved from theft, vandalism, and the weather.

True. I hope the BNSF, like the UP starts putting all of the many GN and NP locomotives on static display all over the US into some kind of restoration protocol and activity. The most successful and cash flow positive railroad in the world can surely see the PR value of this kind of investment. Come on Warren Buffet, make this happen.

I live five minutes from Eddystone, PA where the Baldwin Locomotive Works used to be. I’m pretty sure much of the property is a Kmart now sadly. I always get a nice warm feeling when seeing one of their works of art is being restored all the way across the continent!

It is important to restore these steam engines to service. If we ever suffer a Carrington-type solar mass ejection or an intentional EMP attack, these vehicles will be the only trains capable of running.

I dated a girl from Moses Lake my last year at Washington State University. She knew I liked trains and took me over to Mr. Holmes' property where #557 and other railroad equipment was stored. Mr Holmes was very nice and gave us a tour of the grounds. There was an old sheep herder's covered wagon which he called his "small camper" and an SP&S business car which her called his "big camper." I still have the snapshot of #557 I took nearly 45 years ago.

The funny thing about the S160s is that they were basically designed to last for about 90 days of grueling 24 hour use hauling war trains, and now there are a bunch restored in Britain, and this one as well.

Just to wet the appetites of my North American friends for when No. 557 hits the rails once more, this link takes you to a video of two S160s battling up the 1 in 40 grade in the Staffordshire Moorlands of the English Midlands. Small engines by US standards but nick named "Mighty" here in England. kzbin.info/www/bejne/ZmXJpaSpndR5hKc

what about the tender? Did they save it or is it gone too?
@stewartsterling95816 жыл бұрын
The original tender was removed by the ARR before it was sent south for scrap. The Museum of Alaska transportation and industry had a steam tender that they donated for the restoration that was on a steam crane that the ARR had modified for that use. It is an original USATC tender and has been redone to be original again. Will be oil fired though so has a tank in the coal bin.
