What an excellent series on the basics and theory of engine building. So many helpful tips! I am glad you took the time and considerable effort to do it. Many years of experience of what you have learned to be true that you have passed on. My congratulations. Perhaps you might like one or two of mine. I use a low strength thread sealer on all my bolts and nuts with exception of main and rod cap bolts which I use medium strength. The low strength sealer (Loc-tite thread sealer) does several things. Lubricates threads so proper torque specs can be reached. Seals the threads where bolts go into water passages. Keeps the bolts from loosening up. And lastly provides a barrier to reduce corrosion between dissimilar metals. High Tack comes in aerosol cans also. I prefer to paint my gaskets on both sides with it. Makes application much easier and less mess. Use acetone for clean up of High Tack. You will find this especially helpful if later down the road you have to remove the part. After scraping off the majority of the gasket, a lint proof rag with acetone on it will immediately remove the old sealer. Again Thank you for the great series.

Those are very good tips, thank you. I would be careful about using LocTite to lubricate threads....that will actually cause your torque to be off a little. I explain the effects of lubricants in my fastening video.

@@PetesGarage I would have put a 428 CJ in the car. They are a really good Cobra Engine. When you use aluminum heads, water pump, intake. It weighs very close to a Windsor. It looks right in there, and they are beastly in a Cobra, Shelby shipped them that way. The 394FE I have would scare you to death in that car. So much fun and I built the engine for $2000 and some scrounging. A Windsor in a Cobra just seems wrong. Even if it’s cheaper, I can’t under that being issue for a Cobra. But I can build a scary 390 that will look right. And you will never use all of the power.

@@PetesGarage The Goldtop with P90s is be beautiful. I destroyed my left shoulder and I have trouble with a 12” readies neck. I tried a 7.25 Strat and I can play it. I love my Les Paul. I have a bolt neck Epiphone LPSpecial with P90s. Do you know of a company that sells 7.25 radius necks that could fit it? I can’t get my hand to work on a flat radius, I need a rounded fretboard. Good video. Came across it when looking up Canton windage trays. Im wanting to stick with the OE stock oil pan on my 306 build and theres only one rear sump windage tray and it seems like its real chore to get it to fit with the oil pump pickup and with a block mounted dipstick. I got the 2K eastwood paint like you used but mine is in the spray can I also got a couple of the grey primers as well. Havent used it yet my project stalled a bit and now the paint is a year old so I have to toss it out as eastwood states it has a 1 year shelf life.

I was always told the oil pick had to be around a 1/4 inch from the bottom of the pan, I took the pan from my high performance Lima engine 2300 pinto engine, and added an inch to the pan to increase the volume, so I had almost 7 quarts, never had a problem (this was my daily driver) never had a problem with pressure drop or oil temps, but yeah if your circle track race either dirt or pavement yeah a baffled pan will keep the pick up submerged in oil.

Pete's Garage what I wanted to know was is it a good part? I'm in need of replacing my stock balancer as the rubber is getting weak and my engine revs at 8000rpm. Is the fluid damper good or is there something else I should look at?

A fluid damper is best because it covers a huge range and is more effective the harsher the vibration gets.

+Petes Garage - on the box with the four doors at the bottom if the oil pan (the technical term has momentarily evaded me,lol), I noticed the four metal fastening clips. do you clean/cut the threads before using them? personally, I despise the horrible little things...even though they are sometimes a necessity; eg: fastening motorcycle fairing. I had the 'random idea' that a nut could be securely welded underneath...it'd have the added advantage that one could choose a higher-quality metal, instead of taking that what's offered by the manufacturer. on the other hand, all of the above is rendered superfluous, because I cannot imagine parts manufactured by your chosen supplier being of a medium grade. ;) on a wee tangent: this morning, Pete, I was subjected to a moment of enlightenment. not only do i live in the wrong country (Germany); but i also live on the wrong continent! the market for tuning vehicles to this degree over on this side of the 'pond' is a: tedious in finding parts, b: nigh-on-impossible to find technically talented machining shops, c: running the gauntlet and cutting through the red-tape jungle of the stringent street-worthiness/emissions tests; which are imposed upon us by the government, is diffcult with a metaphorical machete....let alone a real one. even if the above mentioned are 'luckily' found or met, you'd have to sell your kidney on ebay to pay for it all! you're a lucky man living over there, pete and as we say up in the north of england - " a reet top fookin' bloke too!" thanks for posting and if I could, I'd drop off a crate of the world's finest beer infront of your workshop! "Newcastle Brown Ale" it's called. or "Dog" as it's affectionately known locally ;) these video's are absolutely priceless mate!

It's taken you over 2 years to get this far obviously because of your other projects but I must admit you have the patients of a Saint as we say here! They are well filmed, edited well, methodical and to the point. Your knowledge is second to none and I must admit your videos are addictive. I read a blog post that you dyno tested the engine and have now tore it apart for inspection. Will you replace all the mains and rod bearings along with the slightly worn thrust washer or just the thrust washers for the final build? And secondly are you rebuilding your Cobra? +RICKAFIX Sometimes the drip comes from the timing cover being off a little and the main seal is not centered on the crank. And sometimes it from oil getting past the pan gasket....either way it's no good. Merry Christmas to you my friend

Just curious as to whether or not you will be doing a video on how to set up the wiring harness and connect the engine to the interior electronics/dash. I want to eventually build an engine and put it into a chassis of my choosing and so far thanks to you the engine building part of things seems straight forward but I find myself wondering how people are able to put engines they built from scratch into a random car and have the interior electronics and what not still functioning like from factory. Any insight or advice would be appreciated.

Interesting, I read recently that my car has a dry sump with around 8 litres of oil in. On the dashboard it shows both oil temperature and coolant temperature but not pressure. Is this system with the sump better than a dry sump?

A dry sump is used mostly for cars that will be used in racing applications where oil may not always sit in the bottom of the oil pan. Neither is better, they are each designed for specific use.

I never thought the larger sump was for more cooling surface area on the outside, just that the larger oil volume had a higher heat capacity when run with an oil cooler. What about fins? I've seen sumps with fins that don't look like they do much more than decorate it, I'd love to see what kind of extra cooling performance you'd get out of actual fins like those on an air cooled engine's cylinders.

+RTDragonCommando Anything to add surface area to the pan will help in cooling. You don't want the oil to hold heat, you want it to dissipate evenly.

you can put magnets on the oil filter too, I would rather have the junk trapped in the oil filter but its harder too see, unless you open the filter but yeah, a magnetic drain plug will tell you wants going on with less hassle.

Say Pete, has anyone welded a heat sink onto an oil pan to facilitate cooling? I suppose intercoolers for oil does the same with some additional plumbing. Hm, bubbles - gasses can make great insulators. Can you perhaps compare and contrast what a dry sump oil system is and why it would be preferred ? A soft suggestion for your shows. Consider a flexible (or directable) camera with light source to peek into cylinder, upper/lower wells, oil pans, or anywhere else you might like to show us. I suspect that every build out you do, after taking your time, cleaning all surfaces, applying sealant and gaskets, torqueing as MFGRs specifies - you can park your car in your living room without being concerned about fluid leaks onto the white rug.

Another great question. Dry sumps are used mostly to even out oil flow. When accelerating or turning the engine could starve. he purpose of the external sump is to make sure oil is always available. I like to work very clean

Nice video Pete just started watching your series. What manufacture do you use for your gasket selection? every time I open a gasket set it's cork oil pan gaskets! Also, did you lock-tite the windage pan bolts in your oil pan upon final assembly?

+Ed Spencer Thank you. Fel Pro or Victor Renz will have special gasket sets designed for high performance applications. You have to look for special applications. I do not use LocTite. It is not necessary if the fastener is properly torqued down....but it can be used as a safety feelgood measure

I'm not sure if they make for that year of ford blocks or for ford at all, but I've had a lot of good experience with fel-pro's one piece rubber gasket that is steel lined on my chevy 350. I've never had an oil leak with them and you don't use any sealant(or it won't work right). Hey have you finished this engine? I honestly spent the last week watching all of your videos involving rebuilding an engine. Thank you very much for your help and insight. I am attempting to rebuild my first engine in the next couple weeks and you gave me a bunch of great information on how to rebuild an engine properly. Thankfully the engine I am rebuilding is a four cylinder so it will be a bit easier than this engine. But again thank you for your videos. In a previous video concerning main bearings you mentioned how if any bearings have a slight scratch even from a manufacturer we shouldn't use it. Do you recommend sending the scratched ones back or buying a new set again or what?

Hey Pete. I have an engine builder building me a Windsor 393 stroker. He wants to put a high volume oil pump on this engine. Everything I can find says its a bad idea on sb fords. Any thoughts or experience on this? Happy 4th of July man.

I use a HV oil pump in mine, just make sure you put on a 7 quart pan. Happy 4th my friend

Pete great videos, however i'm concerned about your measurement on sump pickup clearance. I have always used straight edges and rulers and your idea on adding a known thickness spacer is great. I think your math is flawed or i didn't follow correctly. If you add a 1/4" spacer and then have a 1/4" gap between the pan and block surface you should have zero clearance. The only clearance would then be from the gasket material in this case a paper gasket more like 1/16" with out being squished from torque. If you used a 3/8" spacer since that's your min spec, then with the pan installed and had zero clearance then the gasket thickness would be your extra. Using a 1/2" or more spacer would give a gap to measure to be sure the pan is sitting on the pickup.

Well something budget minded 2k range sbc 350 for a 72 chev pickup. Bottom end has low miles so just bolt on top end. heads, intake, cam, carb and all the small bits. Have been looking at the Edelbrock top end packages but also looking into piecing it together. Vortec heads etc.. Thought with your expertise here be able to just rattle off a good budget minded build that a backyard mechanic could throw together without getting too technical ;). Love the vids. Keep em coming. Why not use a Dry sump. You will gain the extra HP by not having the engine driving the pump. Lose some weight while you're at it. The plus side is the external oil cooler and maintenance cost.

***** Actually my question was pointed at you. As I despise people that seem to think they can talk for someone else when I didn't ask them to start with. And his assumption about my knowledge on the subject is one other reason as well. I installed many of these systems for many different costumer reasons. As if you're going to spend $12,000.00 on a motor the extra $800.00-$1100.00 investment is cheap insurance. As you don't need to spend $4000.00 if you're not some NASCAR engine builder. +Jake Champion Yes it is, you got me. I have had lint free cloths breakdown when I soak them in lacquer thinner so I use paper towels. I will only use them to clean gasket surfaces and only when they are wet so the don't leave fibers. You're a sharp guy.
