That first ATC made my head hurt. The pilot said the nature of the emergency right away and said to standby for both fuel and souls, but she continued to ask for all three. They needed to listen and let the pilot handle their procedures. But then it got worse when ATC changed a 180 heading LEFT turn into a 90 heading RIGHT turn. Why not have them continue the left turn? Good on the pilots for maintaining their cool, and especially confirming the turn direction, although i could hear them biting back their frustration.

I know they're busy, but it seems reasonable to raise concerns about the 1st controller. I mean, she seemed to talk too much when the pilots need to focus on flying and checklists...she made them repeat what the issue was when it seemed clearly stated from the outset....she continued to talk to them after hearing "stand by" at least twice....she told them to continue with right turn, after telling them to make left turn.....I assume the controller was a relative rookie, who will hopefully learn from this one!

While I agree with you mostly, she didn't hear the first "stand by" that we heard, as you can hear her say "I think I stepped on you." -- Also, it's important to note this audio has a lot of trimmed silences, so the pacing of the interaction is not accurately represented.

The tone in her voice seemed to indicate her checklists were priority over the pilots’ need to aviate. Though it sounded like the crew were fine anyway, hopefully her leadership corrects this quickly.

I really think ATC controllers should be required to pass the souls on board and the fuel remaining to the next controller for emergency aircraft so they don't have to keep asking for the same info over and over when the pilots are busy trying to keep the flight safe. It just seems unnecessary when the pilots are probably task saturated. Maybe i'm wrong, but from a student pilot perspective this seems like a good improvement that could be made to the ATC process

@mikhailswartz

While I agree that they should pass on the info re. SOB, fuel is consumed on an ongoing basis and the trimmed emergency situation doesn't reflect the duration of the emergency. Imagine for a moment that a 747 or A380 declares an emergency and flies around for 40min running checklists and talking to company and such. The difference in fuel quantities between declaring the emergency and being on final would be significant. Throw in a go-around and the difference grows bigger still. So an update on fuel remaining isn't entirely unreasonable.

Well, they're not going to omit the info about a B767 landing on the parallel, nor will they not tell them about an RJ departing from their designated runway. UAL1027 had things well under control, so there was no reason to completely halt 22R unless they landed and were unable to exit the runway. The only issue with this entire ordeal was the first ATC, who is not the standard for all US Air Traffic Controllers. There was another comment stating it might have been her first emergency, and I'm kinda thinking that might have been the case, or she may have been used to having to ask 2-3 times. Good news is, they landed safely and that controller can only get better.

A couple weeks ago on a flight out of Denver, I was on an A321 and there was a loud bang outside the aircraft about a minute after takeoff. Several long minutes later, the captain came on the PA and told us that we had experienced a compressor stall. However Delta had real time engine telemetry to their maintenance HQ and the pilots were told all engine parameters were normal, so we continued on to our destination. It was a normal flight after that.

Agreed. "Good Luck"? Seriously ATC person? Any ATP pilot practices an engine failure at any point in the flight multiple times a year. They don't need luck. They rely on training. Not on well wishes from ATC. ATC added stress to an emergency situation instead of remaining professional and concise. That was truly bizarre. It seems the golden age of 121 aviation safety is really hanging by a thread at times.

Why or IF the ATC doesn't know exactly how many "souls" are on board is a bit confusing... I'd think in this day and age they could click a few things on a screen and pull up all available information on that aircraft... Including fuel state.. I hope the MH370 disappearance has motivated all airlines to share engine data (etc) in near real time.. I could be wrong, of course... But, it shouldn't be much to push that data to ATC...
