For those of us with little to no knowledge about aviation can you explain the potential damage that could be caused by reversing?
@JuanAdam123 жыл бұрын
@@catguy00 Thrust reverse redirects the normal thrust forward instead of rearward, but that's not the issue. The engine is still sucking in tons of air from in front of the plane, and everything on the ground in front of the plane, into the engine. Reverse thrust is used on landing on a "clean" runway to help slow the airplane (in addition to brakes and lift-spoiling devices), but using reverse thrust is discontinued at (typically) 60 knots--about the time the airplane is ready to exit the runway onto a taxiway. TL;DR--using enough reverse thrust to move a loaded airplane backwards on a taxiway is a needlessly dumb thing to do--especially when your need for doing so isn't your fault, or your reasons for doing so is to be "super helpful."

Fun facts about Greater Cincinnati International Airport: 1) It’s not even in Ohio, let alone Cincinnati. It’s initialism CVG comes from Covington, Kentucky, which is approximately five miles east-northeast of the airport. If named today, it’s abbreviation would like be based off of the city of Hebron - possibly HEB, although that sign is taken by a regional airport in Burma. 2) It is run by the Kenton County Airport Board, even though the airport lies entirely with Boone County (does border Kenton County) 3) CVG is DHL’s largest cargo hub globally. 4) Canadian folk singer Stan Rogers died in a cabin fire incident which required his plane land at CVG. Though the majority of passengers died, some passengers and all crew survived. 5) Every time I fly through CVG it takes no more than thirty minutes from the time I walk through the door until my butt is in my seat by my gate. Incredibly smooth operation.

Unfortunately not nearly as busy as it once was, and it is a nice airport. There is an abandoned concourse with over 90 gates sitting in the middle of the field that used to hub all the Comair flights. We have picked up some business in recent years, and freight is doing well, but the Delta/NW merger took CVG from 3 concourses down to one not completely filled.

I have seen the mad dogs and 727s use reverse thrust and back up out of the gate at some airports in the past with just a man standing in front of the plane plugged into the intercom port in in the nose. Are they no longer able to do that with today’s planes? When I was a little kid, we were on a 707 at a gate at Love Field in Texas and they pulled to far forward into the gate, and used reverse thrust to nudge the plane back into the correct parking position. As a little kid, I loved it! Hearing those engines wind up a tad, then watching the wing spoilers pop up when he stepped on the brake or what ever. They repeated the process about 3 times before they were satisfied and shut everything down. Will never forget that event.

I was working ground at SLC when Western earned the coveted Golden Towbar Award! I tried to tell him to wait for his gate but he thought he knew better. He must have forgot that gates B4 & B6 were reversed or it was his 1st time at SLC. As it was the ramp I had no real control, but I was just trying to prevent what ended up happening.
