No, "mayday" shouldn't really be used here. Pan Pan would be more appropriate. A mayday call implies the plane is in serious danger, going down, and needs all available resources now. A 74 popping an engine isn't really that big of deal, especially fairly light. I don't know where pilots in the US got trained to call mayday for every little emergency but it has caused major issues when having smaller "urgency" situations everywhere else in the world. Using a mayday everywhere else brings all ATC to a halt, all hands on deck for a crashing airplane. They kind of pissed when they scramble everything for a what should have been a "pan pan" urgency call.

Even though the engine failed on climb, would the runway be checked for FOD?
@philipstaite4775 Жыл бұрын
I think that is why the controller asked if it failed on the runway or in flight. The response was on climb out. Still, out of an abundance of caution if they could switch to 8R and at least do a cursory inspection of 9 that would seem like a good idea. Granted 8R is "only" 10500 compared to 9's 13000 ft length. But winds were not a factor - 3 or 4 kts. Maybe that's why they directed them back to 9. After they landed, they'll see if they dropped anything on takeoff or landing. Limit the potential FOD to one runway.

Any controllers out there - fuel in time or weight? I can understand that there are situations where knowing how long an aircraft can remain in the air is important, as well as times when knowing how much fuel the ARFF units might need to deal with could be, but there doesn’t seem to be any logic applied in many of these sorts of incidents. In this instance the aircraft has already stated their intention to return immediately, so why does the controller repeatedly bother the crew with requests for fuel remaining in time when it’s of no consequence and they’ve already stated the weight. In other cases controllers don’t specify and there just seems to be no consistency. Is there any logic to this or is it purely just dependent on the regional control center’s paperwork?
@igotbeans Жыл бұрын
They need to know how much fuel there is in case a plane is dealing with fires like this flight was. Emergency crews need to know how many souls (living people bc planes can often transport deceased remains) to locate all survivors. They need to know fuel load to prepare to deal with the fire and maybe even prepare for an explosion since cargo flights like this one can carry hazmat items. Knowing all this info helps expedite the rescue efforts.

people get so triggered over this, I never used it in 15 years and controllers knew exactly what "declaring an emergency, engine failure" was

As a former 5Y pilot myself, we’re trained to use ICAO phraseology, and use Qne/Qnh /Qfe because Atlas flies all over the world. These guys did an exceptional job.

If you fly overseas a lot, as a 74 crew would, you tend to revert to ICAO.

I'll add my 2 cents here. THAT is how professionals aviate and communicate.😁 The FO was calm enough when changing freqs to give the controller a 'good night'. Of course the media jerks are quick to point out that it is a Boeing aircraft. They are clueless and probably couldn't tell you what that jet uses for fuel.

most planes use Diesel

After take-off checklist, Declaring an emergency, climb checklist, engine fire checklist, check aircraft weight, communications with ATC and company, FMC flight planning change to ILS RW09R, Descent checklist, Aircraft Performances check, Crew Briefing, ATC comms , Weather check, Fly the plane, Before Landing Checklist, Land….This is why pilots have a big payday ( but not so at Atlas Air - freightdogs as they are called worksuper hard for their $ )…😅

ATC and the 74 did good, but ATC didn't need to know where they lost the engine.

In case when it happens over the runway the runway inspection is needed.
@Lufex_ Жыл бұрын
Actually they do because if it had happened on the runway, the controllers need to know so they can carry out an inspection of the runway for debris as it can pose a big risk for other aircraft using that runway. The concord incident is a very good example of why debris on the runway is so dangerous.

Crazy how this is getting hit like another problem for Boeing. It's a 9 year old plane! At this point, it's a maintenance or some other event that damaged the engine...which Boeing doesn't make in the first place!
