I've been a marine mechanic for years..he done a great job! The only thing I would do different is ,I wouldn't have pulled the plugs and sprayed the cylinders.. especially when you spin the engine with the plugs out you didn't have the water running..I know it didn't start but, it doesn't take more than 30 sec to start heating up an impeller.. One more thing ..store your fuel tanks full of gas..then there's no chance of condensation ....other than that good job..

A lot of people don't realize it, but storing a boat in a green house type enclosure helps protect the boat better than storing in under an overhang. The greenhouse will keep the boat warmer in winter months often preventing freezing damage due to water in areas it isn't' supposed to be.

I would never store a motor long-term with gas in the carbs. Drain them dry to prevent gummy residue from building up. Also, what's the use of filling gas tanks only to leave the gas to deteriorate over time? Drain the tanks (and hoses) dry. Also, get rid of as much water in the cooling system as you can (this is especially important in salt water motors) by first running fresh water through the motor for a few minutes and then using compressed air to clear the system of water. Dry motor, empty carbs. Done.

Some of theas electrical systems if u crank the engine with out the plug wires hooked up or grounded or on a spark checker u will be spending hundreds on. @sentientarc6 жыл бұрын
Tom, you said 2 things that conflict: "High Octane, Low Ethanol Gasoline". That's wrong but a VERY common mistake. Forumla 1 Race Engines use extremely high compression.Their engines have changed over the years (6 cylinder, then 4), usually because engineers want to try something new (there have even been recent Electric Formula 1 Races). Were it not for High Octane Fuel (100 or more), the Formula 1 Internal Combustion Engine would fire early due to the increased pressure in the cylinders. To compensate, High Octane Gasoline is used and, it's baclwards. The octane number increases as the ethanol increases because ethanol is less violatile than gasoline. Using pure gas in Formula 1 would cause detonation, a.k.a. knock or ping. Many vehicles are very powerful yet have small engines due to the lessons learned in Formula 1. Because Honda, for instance, can get power from a 4 cylinder engine that was unheard of just 40 years ago, higher octane fuel became necessary for you and for me. Honda learned a lot from Formula 1, even won often. Detroit should have been watching sooner. Me? I think that once the government stop stocking lakes and streams with fish, people are going to notice that there's a problem and maybe just maybe, admit that man is the cause.
@mytech67793 жыл бұрын
Your education in the subject is severely underdeveloped. The chemistry is just not that simple, a fine thread of truth is hidden in your statement but the whole of the statement is so grotesquely oversimplified and inaccurate that I must say you have no business giving any advice to anyone about fuel chemistry at any level. You can make 115octane and higher pure hydrocarbon fuels by using different blends of alkanes alkenes(both branched and linear), cycloalkenes and aromatics. In the USA fuel was much higher quality in 1970 than it is today and contained no alcohol, many regular street cars with the performance engine option had 11:1 or higher compression ratios and that was without the aid of special computer designed combustion chambers and antiknock sensors to retard timing. Specific blends of alcohol and gasoline(like 5 to 10% ethanol) can have some efficiency benefits for certain specific situations, while other blend ratios are rather undesirable for most uses. All alcohol-petroleum blends are very bad for storage. Over the years formula 1 has used many different fuels depending of the changes in racing rules that benefited one fuel or another, they were using pure methanol for several years. In drag racing they use pure methanol(not ethanol), pure nitro-methane, or gasoline depending on the category; some categories allow a choice of nitro-methane with no supercharging or gasoline with supercharging. For aviation gasoline adding a small percent alcohol (to prevent water crystals in freezing temperatures) will actually lower the anti-knock rating of 100/130 rated fuel by about 2 points while it will slightly raise the rating for 80/87. (These are aviation anti-knock performance test results, not exactly correlated with automobile octane rating but both measure anti-knock performance.)

@ronpowell23737 жыл бұрын
If you can find it , use graphite grease or carbon grease- an just a small swipe, on the plug threads. Those greases are conductive and so wont hurt the plugs ground . Normal grease is not conductive. I also spray the outside of the engine in water dispersant spray , wipe down and then use a hand sprayed silicon wax ( one for car paint) on the outside of the engine. That keeps the engine looking new by keeping the bolts and fixtures from corroding. Also the engine leg goes onto a support stand once the boat is parked - a couple of milk crates or a small stack of lumbar pieces - it helps relieve the transom of the motor weight and means you can move the motor up and down if the tilt tube grease congeals in storage. That makes it easier to break the tilt system free when the boat comes out of storage.

@MortonsontheMove7 жыл бұрын
It depend on the engine, A larger 4 stroke with an intercooler you may have to do that if there is no proper drain. For outboards they are designed to drain in the vertical position. There may be some left but should not be filled in any cavities, so no pressure when freezing. Also turning it over a few times without starting it will run the pump dry and you should be good to go. I have never used antifreeze and never had a problem, just remember to check the lower unit for water.

Just like was said on previous comments, fogging isnt necessary unless its going to sleep for longer than a year or 2. As an experiment, i left the cylinder head off an old 40 horse johnson (for parts had a scored cylinder) all winter in thick salt air. no fogging oil coating. next spring: not a hint of rust anywhere on the pistons or cylinders, and that was with the head OFF. For my 225 johnson, i put a mix of fresh 89 gas, 40:1 royal purple synthetic , and stabil. ran it for 10 minutes and im done. i think that fogging oil is actually bad for plug fouling, carbon buildup and possible detonation.

By turning the engine over without running it (like in the video when we spray in the cylinders directly) this will run the pump dry and pump out any water. There may be a little moisture but if the engine is down they are designed to drain without any large amounts that could freeze and cause pressure buildup so it shoulden't be a problem. As long as your have stabilizer in the gas and engine it doesn't really matter whether you leave it connected or not. I disconnect mine as I don't store the gas in the boat. Nothing else really, just the lower unit like in the video. If there are any exposed metal parts (like throttle linkages) It is sometimes good to spray them with a light oil to prevent corrosion.

Ya know I thought of another thing that I should have mentioned. Its a really good idea to lubricate your steering cable if your engine is connected to a steering wheel. There should be a grease zerk where the engine connects to the cable.

You just want to spend more time with your engine before storing it.
