I think it would be a great idea to have higher compression ratio without actual higher compression. Leave the compression the same (say 12:1) but on the powerstroke the piston expands further (16:1 or whatever) and the gas cools down more, giving more energy to the engine instead of to the exhaust. could we have a super complex weird crankshaft that does this?

I take it this is the principle that water injection works using? injecting water after the compression stroke to cool the cylinders etc thus increasing the thermal gradient?

Water injection is 2 fold, cooling yes, but also acts as an anti-knocking agent. Its also usuallly 50-50% with either ethanol or methanol

The Workshop interesting...so would systems like nitrous oxide also have a degree of temperature gradient working in their favour? (as I understand it almost all compressed gasses have a cooling effect on any surface they are released upon?) will you be doing any water injection/anti knock video any time soon?

"will you be doing any water injection/anti knock video any time soon?" - yes
