Engine off landing!

What happens if the engine of an airplane stops?
If the engine fails, airplane becomes a glider. The pilot has to use the control surfaces (ailerons etc) to ensure the airspeed stays over the stall speed for the particular aircraft type.
At the same time the crew will be trying to identify a potential place to put the aircraft down in order to minimise injury to occupants or people on the ground.

I teach my students to land with the engine completely off. But before that, I explain and show them all the elements that are important for a good and correct approach.

My instructor suddenly pulled the throttle and said: "That damned engine just quit..." Okey, check wind direction, the angle the farmers plough had been running, a field was selected. We got lower and lower. I kept the nerves cold and was prepared for setting down the wheels out there, not questining the possibility to land safely. "Good" said the teacher and pushed the throttle to max at the height of not too many feet.... No airfield exercise...... I also got lessons how to perform more than one aerobatic manoeuvre.... That teacher was special and an expert on that type of plane, ended up with 15 000 hours on that type.

Did the instructor warn you that he was opening the throttle again, and did he open it slowly and progressively? More than one aircraft has rolled in because of a sudden increase of engine torque whilst going low and slow.

@@ShaunieDale He just pulled the throttle back to idle. No warning, no tip about the coming exercise. That instructor had 15 or 20 thousand hours in that plane....

In the soaring club to which I belonged they would regularly practice this with more experienced pilots since you could never be certain you would find enough lift to get you back to home field if you ventured far away and you were required to commence a landing circuit at 900 ft AGL. They called these 'out landings'. With a glide ratio of 25 or 30 to 1, I guess you had more time and could fly further to choose a suitable landing site than could a dead stick powered plane, but landing in some paddock on a skid or single unsprung wheel meant the glider's sole shock absorber was the pilot!

First priority is to fly the aircraft anything you have time in addition like navigating and communicating are a bonus. That's what most student pilots remember their instructor drumming into them.

Most instructors have you practice "engine out" maneuvers and landings at an "idle". They also say if you actually turn off the engine... you're in and actual emergency....

When I learned to fly, my instructor made me practice many times this exercise with the engine off too. Contrary to what is said in the comments, there is nothing dangerous, especially when you fly over the airfield, a plane is made to glide.... Not to mention the fact that you can simply restart the engine if you are too short. Today if I have a real failure, I would have less apprehension because I know the capacity of my plane and I have been trained.

@@flydayaviation I helped pull a 152 out of a field once because the newly-minted pilot thought it would be a good idea to practice an actual engine-out. He came up short and the engine did not restart. I don't recall what was growing in the field, but it was over 6' tall and by sheer chance, the pilot landed with the plow rows and the aircraft didn't flip. We were able to tow it out, get the engine started, and the aircraft's owner flew it home, but it could have very easily ended badly. He narrowly missed power lines that he didn't know where there until after he landed. The airplane stayed upright and was essentially undamaged. Pure luck.

On my final test to get my pilot license I was extremely lucky as I was going back with the FAA Instructor to my home airport when on the downwind for runway 18 he pulled the power back and wanted me to fly engine out. I turned final way to close so I put the Cessna 152 into a perfect side slip and as I was looking out the left side window at the runway the FAA Instructor said "Go Around " but I was fixated on making the landing when I heard him say again in a louder tone "GO AROUND " and with that I proceeded with the go around. The whole time I kept thinking that I just failed the test but thankfully I got the passing grade and received my single engine land pilot license. In my own opinion....I would have safely landed the plane.

A side slip is a beautiful thing. I was approaching the runway at Catalina Island pretty high so I slipped to get on the proper glide slope. The girl I was with started to freak-out…”What are you doing! WHAT ARE YOU DOING?!” I really didn’t want to get into a discussion with her about the benefits of losing altitude rapidly through uncoordinated control inputs while I was trying to land on a mountaintop, so I just turned to her and yelled back, “IT’S NONE OF YOUR BUSINESS!”

99% of the landings I do in my Long EZ is with the engine at hard idle. Abeam the numbers on downwind the throttle goes to the aft stop and the speed brake pops out. Then I control the decent with slips. Easy, at least 2,000 times (so far).

Every time yo throttle back for a glide approach, the engine cools. On a long approach, one opens the throttle for a few seconds to keep the temp up for the go-around, if there is one.

On any practice engine failure you have to watch the speed. You have to do this (with engine idling) for the flight examination.
