Engine Oil Consumption in my Infiniti FX50. Nissan VK50VE with over 200,000 miles

1 quart per 3,000 miles.
Not bad, considering the vehicle has close to 219,000 miles and still purrs like a kitten.

Which brand, model, viscosity of engine oil are you using to FX50? And what’s your oil change interval?

PCV valve failure can also cause oil consumption, not just piston ring wear, or sludge stuck on the piston ring

Agree. PCV valve maintenance is usually one of the first steps I recommend for people with excessive consumption.

Thanks for your videos! I need your expertise. Driving a 09 FX50, I fixed the variable valve solenoid months ago, it was the P0021 error. The car was already shaking like crazy bc of missfires. After adding the new one the error was completely away. At the beginning, the symptoms started with small drops in the rpm, it felt like the transmission was failing. Now I have a little rattle of the car, when the rpm drops to 1000 to 1100 rpms in the 5th gear driving constantly (60km/h). When accelerating higher to around 2000 rpms, everything's fine. Also this rattle appears, when driving constant and going away from the gas pedal, and accelerating again. Mostly on lower rpms. Any idea what this can cause in the VK50?

Probably carbon build up on the intake valves, the engine is direct injected.

I have 2012 m37 What’s the common issue with power steering reservoir bubbling, is there air in the system ? No issues w steering

I do not know what exactly they changed in the design to make the reservoirs bubble. Nissan had been using that basic setup for a lot of years, and the older cars don't usually have bubbling reservoirs. I know it doesn't look too "peaceful" but it's not really anything to worry about

I have an 07 m45 @ 168k and it consumes approximately 1Qt. every 2,000 miles and run about a 5,000mile OCI. I have had a factory fill, Penzoil UP, and Mobile1 in a 5w30 with similar results. Would moving to a 5w40 or Ester based oil help minimize consumption?

I honestly have no definitive info regarding the ester based oils. However, I know that 5w40 and 10w40 should still be in the range of acceptable oils for the VK45DE. I would just try the ester oil to see if anything changes. Just like the people who run diesel oils, it was just a matter of trying to see what would work

Also, I usually recommend that you check to ensure your PCV valves are good. Most times, people report lower consumption after attending to those. Although, some engines will still consume excessive oil, regardless of all the remediation steps we can take

Same problem with my fx50 but I do smell oil burning so I have may have a oil leak and my car has 170000 miles on it

You can check for leaks on the side of the engine heads by just running your hands (or napkin) front and back. If your valve cover gaskets are seeping, the oil will usually make it onto the hot exhaust manifolds and stink when it burns off.

Uhh that’s not a great question, what exactly is wrong with the car ? What have you done too try and fix the issue, spark plugs, coil packs, starter, alternator, battery, a lot of things can play out.

Without any background info, I would just suggest taking it to a mechanic/dealership for a proper diagnosis

All the M56s I have had, have consumed oil to some degree. Nothing catastrophic, but as a Nissan V8 owner, I am used to checking often and topping up between changes

@@EdBwoy a quart every 3 to 600?? Getting that p0021 over advanced, and p0543 oil pressure low. Full on oil, still have 2k left on interval. Drivers cat is clogging up but the 21 is intake, passenger side. Can't see the correlation here. Anyways, checking paperwork for warranty from shop that replaced engine, and then most likely off to Infiniti for a look inside the oil pan.. Side note, how comfortable is the driver seat in the L, vs in the S; over a 400ish mile trip? Idk if you've taken that kind of trip in the L yet.. but my sport seats are killing my bum 😆

@@mikeschaner5853 oh, not that bad at all. The worst was my M56S, which did was about 1 qt per 2,500 miles when I used Valvoline. It is usually better than that though. Check the paperwork, sometimes they force you to go through a dealership to prove that your engine is consuming excessive oil. But something is not right for sure.

@@mikeschaner5853 so, there are 3 different seats: base model, sport or deluxe touring. The sport ones are great for the twists and turns, but for highway drives, the deluxe touring is unmatched.
