Great video mate! I’m adding a water temp gauge to my old Holden and this will really help. Thanks for all your efforts! See you on the tracks.

I've moved my oil temp sensor from the sump to an oil filter adapter on my 300 tdi. Temperatures seem to be much more accurate and temperature is measured right before it is circulated in the block. I get higher readings than before because the big volume of oil in the sump is cooler. I get around 105⁰c on the highway.

what about an oil cooler rad, or a thermastat opening at a slightly lower temp if your towing alot

great video im doing the same thing with the VDO oil temp sensor 1/8 npt i was wondering if you put any thread sealer on the sensor ?..... and my other question is im going to be welding the sensor into my oil pan and my pan is aluminum... should the weld-in bung be aluminum or steel or does it make a difference ??? and should the bung be npt like my sensor is ? thank you !!!
@RoamingTheOutback7 жыл бұрын
Thanks mate. No I did not use sealer. The thread should be tapered so it tightens off as you go, and thread seal may interfer with the earth unless the sensor has its own separate earth. As to your other questions its best you seek professional advice from a welding firm. As far as I know you can't successfully weld metal to aluminium with any degree of ease. Your bung should probably match your sender so you won't need to drill and retap it later.

Nice video, what gauges have you fitted in your defender now? I know you also have oil pressure, any others?
@RoamingTheOutback7 жыл бұрын
Currently fitted with oil pressure, oil temperature, voltmeter, EGT, head block temperature, tyre pressure monitor, tacho and coolant temperature. So got the main areas covered.. still deciding if I want a transfer box oil temp gauge or not.. just need to find somewhere to put it.

@mountainconstructions6 жыл бұрын
That is a brilliant idea What was that sensor in your sump guard? Was it a pre existing threaded hole?
@RoamingTheOutback6 жыл бұрын
My sump already had a temp sensor. It may have been original as an option. Not sure if all defender sumps would have a thread or not.
@ensatlantic7 жыл бұрын
Nice! But wouldn't you like to wrap the wiring of the sensor with some protective tubing to prevent chafing?
@RoamingTheOutback7 жыл бұрын
It could be a good idea but I had nothing handy and few of the other sensor wires have had any wear issues. As long as there's enough slack in the line and no tight spots it should be fine.

It would be interesting to know the comparison between Oil Temp and Water Temp.... Would just having a good water temp gauge be just as beneficial in warning of overall increased temps or do u reckon u need both?
@RoamingTheOutback7 жыл бұрын
From what I've read Rob the oil temp can increase above the water temp. The water only spins around the head, whereas the oil is sent throughout the whole engine. If the oil cooler isn't up to scratch and your pushing it hard the oil temp can rise reducing the lubricating effectiveness thus potential for metal on metal contact and premature wear. Probably a good idea to fit both if you have the room.
@Desmodromic9165 жыл бұрын
Oil needs more time to reach operating temp and its beeter indicator of engine temperature compared to coolant temp. You can add same sensor in coolant, (diffs, trans) and just add a switch to choose between water and oil. All shown on one gauge.

Great video, very helpful and a nice walk through. I have a question about the wiring for the sender. At about the 3:48 mark when you clipped the wire onto the sender, what kind of plug is that? Was that included with your sender or did you purchase it separately? I have the VDO vision series oil temperature, oil pressure and water temperature gauges, all senders and necessary adapters but I would like to get proper connectors to make everything as secure and weatherproof as possible. I've looked on Ebay and Amazon but am having trouble sourcing them.
@RoamingTheOutback4 жыл бұрын
pretty sure it came with the sender. It's not waterproof at all. Just a crimp on with sleeve. Thanks
@mustangmaniac19834 жыл бұрын
@@RoamingTheOutback Ok, thanks for the reply. I'm going to put some heat shrink tubing on the wire end of the connectors when I install them, hopefully that will seal them a little better. I got lucky and ended up finding these on a few sites, like Summit Racing, Ebay and where I bought mine, Amazon: www.amazon.com/gp/aw/d/B001RPPRXC?psc=1&ref=ppx_pop_mob_b_asin_title

Can I use a oil pressure gauge as a oil temperature gauge
@RoamingTheOutback6 жыл бұрын
no. The senders are completely different, and the gauges will not be accurate.
@johnpaulgarrido14966 жыл бұрын
Roaming The Outback one last question why is it that my fuel gauge is giving me the wrong reading when fuel reads half a tank when empty reads fuel
@RoamingTheOutback6 жыл бұрын
your sender and gauge may be mismatched, could be an earthing problem or your gauge is old and the internal mechanism out of adjustment.
@johnpaulgarrido14966 жыл бұрын
I purchased an after market gauge and all I did was connect it to the original sender wire from the fuel tank
@RoamingTheOutback6 жыл бұрын
Then the sender is not matched for the new gauge. You'll need to find one with the same ohm rating so they 'talk' together correctly.

@yachtyteam69785 жыл бұрын
No it doesn’t it’s the same temp as gas engines. Didn’t you hear in the video oil rapidly deteriorates after 130 degrees Celsius. Just saying 1700 degrees Celsius will melt iron, let alone the steel of an engine.
