In this episode i will show you how to install a aftermarket coolant temp gauge the fast, easy and best way. I needed a temp Gauge on my 1950 gmc and the one on the 1988 suburban instrument cluster wasn't working. The cheap ebay crap digital thing i thought would be the cheapest one i could buy also not working. I was in advance auto parts one day and found one for 16 bucks and thought wow that seems cheap and it is a bosch, so it is quality. I will show how to install it on a 350 from a 1988 gmc engine.

Doin one of these in a 97 s10. Thought it was about to blow up, but the gauge is just a dirty liar (Literally) My problem is finding a place to put the gauge haha. Thank you for giving me the knowledge required to accomplish this task.

Since i dont see a comment on it as far as i know the line for the mechanical gauges that runs from the sensor to the gauge is filled with pressurized ether gas, i assume it actuates the guage through some kind of pressure change based on the temperature, the 2 wires are for the instrument lights and the gauge can operate independent of them Edit: It could also be a Bi-metallic strip that expands and contracts with heat, also would operate independent of the 2 wires

These usually just have a semiconductor in the sending unit that loses electrical resistance as it heats up. Electricity runs from the gauge through the sending unit and into the block. As the sending unit gets hotter from the coolant the electrical resistance decreases, this causes the electrical current to increase and produced a magnetic field in the gauge that opposes a spring. This is what turns the arm for the gauge. As the block gets hotter the field gets stronger and pushes the indicator arm further.

You are correct about the Ether gas. This is a very old style of gauge called a Bourdon Tube design which is actually a pressure gauge. As the liquid in the reservoir tip expands and turns into a gas the pressure builds up and pushes on a 'diaphragm like' mechanism. This particular Bosch is like the lowest of the low entry level gauges made in China. It will show some activity whether it's actually accurate is anybody's guess. This tooling is the remnants of the OLD Sun Electric consumer gauges from the early 1980's originally made in Taiwan and since sold off 2 or 3 times. They were super cheap then and haven't gotten any better after being sold 3 times in 40 years.

Wanted to see the wiring part, I bought a cucv and reach the temp guage part, you know it's totally mechanical. The brittle line is broken and I dont see where it was even connected. I see a bong at the fan clutch housing, based off where I see you screw in the sensor, I assume its there it should screw in. That red and white wire on your guage, what are they connected to.

Thank you but I have a 1997 ford ranger XLT and I watch so many videos and not one show where the temperature gauge sender is, do you know where it is or I will put a gauge in like you did but I still don't know where the end goes on the engine?

Would it work if you didn't use the temp sensor and hardwired it (guage) to a broken temp guage in the cluster?

Not recommended for teflon tape on any temp senders it can cause a reduction in power source basically a bad contact and cause readings to be off .

We have 54 loadmaster / carry all. 4x4 454. We use it for overlanding... I have one sensor in the head where it is known to be the hottest part of the engine, this particular gauge is a pro comp2, I’ve been wondering if this is a good location? We do have a sensor in the upper radiator hose , and another in the lower radiator hose that runs into a hf-125 auto cool guy solid state fan controller ... I e been looking to find the optimal area to monitor head temp via coolant sensor? This was my first place to check... lol and wouldn’t you know you had a 50 Chevy ... anyways thanks for any input ... be well

Quick question, the installation instructions say not to use Teflon or compounds on the probe because of grounding issues. Mine has a slow leak unfortunately. Any advice?

use teflon, some threads will make contact the teflon will just fill the void and stop the leak
