Engine ran without oil, seized! Can it be saved?

Engine operated without oil "locked up/seized". Is there anything than can be done to get the engine running again? In this video, I attempt to get this engine running again.

When I was a kid our lawnmower siezed up. My parents were divorced and I lived with my mother. My mother removed the spark plug, turned the mower onits side and then poured oil into the cylinder through the spark plug hole. We rotated the blades until it moved smoothly. Set it back upright, gave the pull cord a few tugs and voila it ran! As I remember it didn't sound nearly as seized as yours in the video. My mother was amazing IMO. I enjoy your videos.

I've done it. I had a tiller I found in a recycling dump. Seized up tight with water all the way up to the carburetor when I found it. I told the guy I would have it running in no time. He laughed so loud and thought it was funny. An hour and a half later after I tore it apart and sanded the cylinder gouges out of it. Sent them the video of it running. And it still runs today 8 years later.

Nay the crank Journal bearings are fried it's just a matter of time then you will need a new crankshaft by that time

I have a Honda engine on an old Troy Bilt Tiller that siezed the rod which IS the bearing. Honda is extremely proud of their rods, so I used a hole saw in a drill press to 'ream' the rod assembly to fit the undamaged, not even scored crankshaft. It was siezed enough that it bent the rod a bit, so there wasn't much to lose. I did this nearly15 years ago and it STILL running, with a barely discernable rod knock. It still burns oil; the reason the engine siezed. But I watch it much closer now.

@@timbenham516 Crankshaft isn't the wear item here but the connecting rod and crank bearings are--the crank is forged steel and can be cleaned of the aluminum deposits it gets from oil starvation. In other words, you can save the crankshaft but everything else is toast or will be soon. He should have disassembled the engine for an autopsy--always neat to see engine damage.

I once rebuilt a 16 hp Kohler single cylinder engine that had locked up. Looked a lot like this one inside. It was 30 years old from a John Deere garden tractor that the owners late father had owned since it was new. I tried to convince him a repower was the best choice but he insisted I fix the original at all cost. I pulled it down had the cylinder honed and sleeved. New piston, rings and con rod. I had the crank turned; journals and mains and installed new bearings on both ends. Reused the old counterbalance and oil dipper. It cost him $1000 to rebuild a $600 engine but it ran like new for years to come and the memory of his father lived on. Thank you for what you do and keep em coming!

Heh, nice job! _Many_ years ago a girlfriend siezed up the engine on her old Murray push mower. When I checked, it had little or no oil. I was almost sure it was going to be a lost cause, but I still thought I'd see if I could get it running again. To break it free I had to hit the piston with a small sledge using a piece of wood as a cushion. Some hours later, and after changing the oil three times (it looked like someone had pured glitter into the crankcase) I decided to see if it would start. I was astonished when it fired right up on the third pull and it barely smoked! That thing ran for _YEARS_ afterwards! Moral? Never give up!

Being a racer and someone who works on engines a lot i'd probably never use a lot of these products. But, it is very cool to see how they work, what they do, and how well they hold up. I appreciate what you do on this channel. Very helpful information on here to everyone. I don't think the knock will ever go away. A trashed bearing is pretty much the end of the line. However, I think some of the scoring in the cylinder walls could be masked with a product like Engine Restore. I've used it in the past and had an increase in compression, though I've never done a tear down of an engine I've ran it in. Keep up the great work, it's always great to have marketing tested.

it will poke out the side of the case (rod) in less than an hour under load. no big deal, take it to the dump, grab one that someone else left there with a loose blade or plugged air filter, swap filter, tighten the cutting blade. go another decade-people don't understand small engines these days....... : )

I run an equipment repair shop. A mechanic taught me an old trick 45 years ago. A customer came in to his shop with a car that overheated and seized. He purchased the car from the owner. He spent part of the day trying to get the engine to run again with no luck, still seized up. He asked me to go to the grocery store and buy a few quarts of Coca-Cola. I got back with the cola and then saw him remove the spark plugs and start pouring the Coca-Cola into the engine cylinders. I thought he was out of his f-ing mind. The next day he came in removed the spark plugs and turned the ignition key. I couldn't believe it, the engine turned and blew the remaing coke out of the cylinders. He flushed every thing with new oil and the engine ran again. I have done this same thing with leaf blowers , string trimmers and a golf cart engine. I know the golf cart ran for quite a long time, it burned a little oil but still ran well. The blowers & trimmers ran well for quite a while also. Note: the engine crankshafts were not totally seized but were not turning free enough to use the starter motor or recoil starters. Make no mistake, if an engine has seized it still has been permanently damaged until proper repairs can be done. This was just a short term fix on much older equipment to get a little added engine life out of it. It might just run a day or the rest of a season, the engine has still been damaged...

When we was kids we was given Maxi Puch scooter that seized up somehow had a gauged cylinder wall like that, we got it free and sanded the cylinder wall down with sandpaper ran for years after that.

I don't think there is any product that can get rid of that rod knock without physically replacing the rod bearing, the noise is because the gap is too big and your hearing the rod slap going up and down. But I'm sure your already know that :) keep up the great videos!

But thats kinda the problem, it can help but it can also hide things. Is my valve train working right or is the sound of bad lifters being hidden by the Lucas? If your bearings are starting to go or your rings it can buy you extra time before the engine dies but I think its best to only use it when it gets to that point. I have also yet to see any thing to make me think it works better then simply stepping up your oil weight and that is allot cheaper.

Sorry PF, but JB Weld doesn't fare well in abrasive or scraping situations like you will encounter with the piston rings. You'll have to go for one of the "real metal" enhanced epoxies to even have a chance at it working and even then I fear it will be a waste of time and effort. If the cylinder is all aluminum, you might try one of the aluminum low temp welding rods, then machine it back down.

the trick is you gotta go pretty deep for a jb weld fix on a cylinder wall, but you are right shallow applications it will let loose, but a large fracture or hole. you can hog it out and apply and it will work... but a rebore and a bigger piston ring combo would be recommended.. but after hearing this one start a new bushing or sometimes bearings in these little motors is in order first.

I had a oil filter come off of a s10 blazer years ago and the motor locked up so I filled it with 100% slick 50 and it was a standard so I pulled started it and the motor finally broke free and started but once running it knocked for about 5 minutes and finally smoothed out and I drove it for 6 more months and put another 7k miles on it until ball joint broke and wrecked it into a ditch.

gm engine seizing? yep, sounds normal. had a friend who's parents had a gmc jimmy. thing went through motors every couple of months despite regular oil changes. they'd always seize after awhile. older couple and they didn't hot rod it.

Just wanted to thank you for your videos. You showed me that mowers are not only pretty resiliant, but also that it's pretty easy to take one apart and diagnose a problem. My wife and I got a freebie mower (Weed Eater 158cc Briggs) this summer. We ran it for a while and it siezed. I never bothered to check the oil when we got it. That was my bad. I pulled the spark plug to make sure it wasn't hydrolocked, then checked the recoil spring to make sure it wasn't bound up. I hand spun the motor and it was tight. I think we were fortunate that the motor siezed pretty early into the last mow before a lot of heat built up. It didn't take a lot of hand pressure to free it. Ran an additive (Mechanic in a Bottle) along with the oil. No knock and clean exhaust. Ran it for an hour today. I think it's going to survive another year of service! Keep up the awesome videos!

what i have found in the past when the seize due to oil starvation is the rod has a habit of breaking down and "welding" material on the crank , since most these small engines dont have a oil pump , most these oil treatments wont seep in properly , and since the rod has galled to the crank , it has worn excessively , hence the knock . some times if the engine is worth the cost , it can be honed , a new rod and the crank turned. great stuff you got going on here . im hooked . thanks

The problem is, adding NO2 alone won't do anything but lean it out, it needs a proportional amount more in fuel. Leaning it out is a good way to get detonation, but not more power.

My neighbor had a 95 Ford (this was in 2000) 4x4 5 speed manual 300 Straight 6, he bought it brand new and used it for a farm truck mainly went from farm to farm to check cattle or hauling bags of feed. It quit on him in the middle of the field by my house and he basically said the hell with it and it sat there for 2 years. I aggravated him to death wanting it and he told me it was locked up but he would take $400 for it (it had 30,000 miles in it. I immediately paid him so he couldn’t back out. I put a new battery on it and sure enough it was seized tight BUT was full of oil. I took all plugs out and put A LOT of PB Blaster in each cylinder and let set for 7 day, I returned with a long breaker bar and a socket to fit the crank nut and I worked it back and forth till it freed up, pull plugs again, and cranked engine to blow any remaining PB out, put new plugs in and hit the key, she started and smoked like hell, and I drove it for a week and the smoke gradually stopped, I tuned it up, drove it, 230,000 miles and 16 years later, after teaching my son & daughter to drive a clutch I sold it for $750 to another farmer for a farm truck and it’s still going and going !!! I’ve owned several trucks with that 300 6 cylinder in them and LOVE THEM !!

I'd like to see a teardown and rebuild of that engine. That knock might never go away without a new connecting rod bearing. One thing you should totally do is run thicker oil. Maybe put some Lucas in there.

After watching this vid. I had a go at unseizing my dirt bike. And it runs again. Had to clean up the cylinder walls and new rings. But it ran b4 I did any work to it. Just by filling the cylinder with wd40 and left it sit for 1 day. And first kick. It was free and acaulky started first go after 3yrs of sitting. Thank you. Love the channel.

take the piston out, hone the cylinder, replace piston rings and it'll work kinda, with that kind of blow by you are probably losing 20% or so to that alone. For rod, new bearing If the scoring is real deep you'd actually need oversize piston etc., so not worth it. Can't be too valuable of an engine

Because im an idiot I ran my lawn mower without oil. it began smoking from the crankcase within 1 minute and it was seized pretty much instantly after stopping the engine. I used this video as a guide to try and get it running again and was successful in restoring it to working condition. Great video, very helpful you got a thumbs up from me :)

I used Restore in a Ford Escort almost 30 years ago, it went from 50 miles to a quart of oil to about 250 miles to a quart. The car ran better and when cranking the car over it sounded like it had better compression, sorry I didn't check before and after compression. Love your videos, keep up the good work. Uncle B.S.

I'm surprised it started again. I guess I was expecting a rebuild. Replacing rings / re honing the cylinder wall / perhaps new piston / valves, what ever was needed. Like you said it would never be the same just re lubricating and getting it started with low compression. Thanks again for your videos. I think you do a great job testing things out. I, like you was a big fan of Slick 50 back when it came out. I felt I was buying into false advertising at some point and stopped buying it. People have no issues doing false claims / advertising and taking your money. Thanks for shedding light on the scammers.

Back when I lived in California, a co-worker had a pickup truck that was smoking so badly that he got a ticket for driving a gross polluter. He added a bottle of prolong to the oil, ran it for a while, then he drained out all the oil. He started driving it to work...20 miles each way. He continued driving that truck for months without any oil in it at all, so it didn't smoke. I saw that so I know it was real. I started using pro long after that. Your videos came up after a detailing job I just did. You should do some videos on tire shine or various chemicals, it’s a bit of a shift from the technical and mechanical nature of most of your tests but it would be cool to see something like that from someone I trust like you

If it's a Honda, it sure can. My 30-year-old HRX-series mower was burning oil, and I didn't realize it until it seized after just mowing half a strip one day. Checked the oil, yep, it's empty. Took it to a repair shop I knew nothing about, and after a week or so they told me it "wasn't worth it" to _rebuild_ the engine. They probably thought I would just leave it there, and they could fix it and resell it. But instead I picked it back up, brought it back home, filled the crankcase with oil, tilted the mower back, sprayed WD-40 (not the best option, but it's what I had on hand) into the chamber, and kept pulling the crank. After just a few minutes, she started up. Amazing.

I’ve freed many locked up motorcycle engines with PB blaster and Marvel Mystery oil over the decades and had them run like New again . Sometimes I let them sit for several weeks . Bad score and probably burnt rings, crank bearings burnt . I love your experiment and appreciate your hard work . Gosh . Lucus I guess .

I resurrected a husky 266SE chainsaw that had been run with insufficient oil in the mix, it had galled up and left bits of piston in the bore. I polished it up, freed up the rings and put it back together. It’s still running nicely.

Good Test! I once was Vocational Director in a High School. Someone donated a seized up push mower to the shop class. My teacher filled the engine with diesel. Both cylendar and crank case. It recovered pretty well. Good ole STP in the crankcase did quieten it down a lot. (very little smoke) Cheap recovery perhaps...LOL

I think this is the best channel on YT. Your testing methods are very good. As for the engine at hand. it can be rebuilt better than new if. you want to spend the money and the time. Lubricants additives, "MOST" are misleading at best to a down right lie on what they can do. Bearings are not used by way of friction. They use pressure on the oil or grease. There was a lawsuit on Teflon additives. The Teflon claims were proven false. Another fact is, when Teflon burns, it forms hard crystals that will score cylinder walls and cause the rings to freeze up. That is why your Slick50 engine seized in 2 minutes. The additives that do any good on old noisy, oil burning and/or low compression engines is because they are detergents that helps clean piston rings by loosening the carbon deposits. It also helps dissolve the oil-varnish on and in hydraulic lifters. One bit of irony is when the product works the way it should. the engine will quite often leak oil from rear seals and from the valve cover gaskets. Most of these issues stem from non-synthetic oils of the past. Oils that are 100% synthetic do not need any additives as they will do nothing to help and in fact, will destroy the oil. I can go on in great detail but I'm going to stop today. One more thing Redline oil is the best out there. That is my opinion. however, there is much data on this. I am not affiliated with Redline in any way.

Well I want to say thank you for taking that head off and letting us take a look-see at the cylinder the knock is probably from the crank in the connecting bearing and if I was going to try to improve the compression I would use at STP cuz it's a very thick oil and I've used that when a rebuilding engines you know to give it that extra boost especially in the oil pumps
