Same engine is in the John Deere 825i Gators.
Tools I used:
Makita Cordless Ratchet AWESOME: amzn.to/3bqam7G
Cylinder Hone: amzn.to/3GzaPCF
Piston Ring compressor: amzn.to/3GBNfFf
Gasket Maker I prefer to use on everything: amzn.to/3GAoucE
Because so many ask:
Pocket Knife I Daily Carry USA MADE S30V steel: amzn.to/3nMHrjX
These links are affiliate links that I may or may not make a few pennies on. If you don't like Amazon don't buy from them and buy elsewhere.
Thoughts: The engine itself isn't that bad and probably the highest quality thing on this machine. The rest is definitely China budget quality. A few manufactures have had the ultra compact car; the Chery QQ converted into an off road machine. This Oreion Reeper and the Joyner Trooper being the most popular. Would I buy one? Probably Not. It is going to be a constant maintenance machine with non-stop breakage, especially if you take it off road. You would be better off with a 10-15year old name brand Side X Side. If you want to road drive a machine though, this would be a decent option. It already has a horn, turn signals, headlights, windshield with wipers and fluid, radio, etc. It has better road/pavement manners than a true side by side UTV which is to be expected since it's essentially just a compact car.
WHY it ate the piston rings on only #3. I think it was due to low oil and the 3rd piston being the last one on the oiling circuit. There wasn't enough oil to spray up though the squirter to cool and lubricate the 3rd piston.
Where I bought OEM Chery parts from: Ali Express
Chery SQR 372 800cc
3 cylinder 12 Valve
51hp/51ftlbs torque 6000rpm
2014 Oreion Reeper 4x4
Chery QQ
Joyner Trooper
Duruxx DRX2 DRX3
John Deere Gator 825i

I live in jasper tx and just put an engine in one of those,I had never worked on one before but I Changed the engine and it's cramped on space but not really any different from working on a small front wheel drive. It was cool to see you do the topend considering the engine I put in was supposed to be running and when I finished I got it to run but it has a blown head gasket so I'll be repairing that now. When I was younger I had a customer with a recently rebuilt Toyota MR2 that was burning oil like this reaper, on a lot of motors you really need the service manual because what I found is that the rings all had a certain position they had to be in,not just the old school staggering the rings method!Once the rings were positioned correctly no more oil consumption 👍👍

The guys who don't want to work on these little engines may have to learn anyway. You're ahead of curve. It's not like the engines are going away. As a builder/remodel contractor who repairs all my own tools, you learn very quickly that every major brand is made in China. Some in Taiwan, the better ones in Japan, most in China. You'll find a couple brands made in Europe, they might be better, but typically twice or three times the cost but not twice or three times the quality. Pick your poison. Buy cheap usually means get cheap, buy expensive doesn't always mean quality. Do your research.
@sixtyfiveford
@sixtyfiveford 2 жыл бұрын
When you fix your own tools you learn everything. It took the owner a year and a half before he found me via a mutual friend to work on this. He called every ATV shop in town and the neighboring state, then went to call auto shops and everyone told him no. ATV shops told him to essentially throw it away and buy a new ATV/UTV. That's the disposable world we live in.

Most USA made name brands like Milwaukee, Stihl, Snap On,Harley Davidson,etc.. are now actually partially or completely made in China. Many still think they're made in USA so they'll laugh at you & your Chinese brand chainsaw not realizing that their Stihl was made in China.

I think it's kinda weird how many shops won't work on older vehicles despite being fuel injected. They're actually often easier to work on than newer vehicles.I heard many shops don't have timing lights anymore.
@sixtyfiveford

@@michaelbrinks8089 Just a heads up, Milwaukee is 100% Chinese owned (TTI) and just give people the perception of USA with this USA name. Milwaukee failed as a USA business and TTI saved them. Stihl is still a German brand with most of their saws being assembled in the USA with foreign parts mainly because no one will make parts in the US. How much you can claim that's USA made is really not much. Americans can't afford American laborers anymore. Everyone demands higher wages but then complain when stuff costs four times as much, so we just moved to China to get our stuff.

It is not a converted Chinese car. The Oreion Reeper is a production vehicle made in China and assembled here in Corrales New Mexico and yes it is street legal. I have the 4 door version and mine is tagged. Glad to see someone taking the time to tear one down and rebuild the engine. This is the 1st video I've seen where someone takes the initiative to rebuild one, like you said there is no one else so you become that one. Lol. Great video. Knock on wood I have 3000 trouble free miles on mine but I'm also fortunate enough to have a dealer within a couple hours of me I could take mine too if need be but your video has been very beneficial in actually seeing the tear down process. Wish you were closer to me, I'd hit you up in the event I needed engine repair.

China makes these for a few brands that are just labeled for whomever wants to buy them in bulk. Duruxx DRX2 DRX3 is just one of many. They do little more than put the tires, roll cage, put oil/had in and they're done. No it's not a Chinese car per se but every part is pretty much from the Chery QQ.
@maxum3300
@maxum3300 2 жыл бұрын
@@sixtyfiveford yes China does make them for several different brands. Like you said Durrux is one, Rebel is another. In Canada they call it a Discovery but it has a slightly different front end. When I mentioned they were assembled in Corrales New Mexico I was speaking of the Oreion Brand specifically. I really enjoyed the engine rebuild video. Awesome job. Merry Christmas.

It is fun to cruise around in but way overpriced for the quality/lack of quality you get. I think they sell new for around $17,000 which is the same ballpark as a high quality name brand UTV. I think they fit their quality better in the 8-9k range new. I'm sure the importers are paying around this and marking them up to the $17k+

Biggest red flag is that Fram oil filter 🤦. I ran them exclusively for years, until after an oil change on my Silverado. Started it up after the oil and filter change, and only had 15 psi of oil pressure. It had always run at 40 when warm at idle. Pulled the filter off, and found casting defects blocking the passages. Thought it was a fluke, so continued to use them. Then a few months later, the same thing happened again, but on my daughter's car. I'll pay a few bucks more for a Wix, AC Delco, Bosch, or Motorcraft from now on.
@sixtyfiveford
@sixtyfiveford 2 жыл бұрын
I never run Fram on my stuff but do occasionally on customers stuff to save a buck. I will say FRAM is 10x better than some of the quick oil change places filters I've cut open. I only dislike FRAM for the bottom mounted oil bypass hole; they are not the only one to use this style. During cold startup when oil bypasses the filter media it is forced pass all the dirty media pleats and can pull/wash previously caught junk away and straight through your motor. Top mounted bypass like Motorcraft and Napa/Wix is my choice as the oil just goes in and out when cold. That being said every FRAM I've cut open has never looked like any had failed and think they do get picked on a little excessively.
@CrazyHamSales
@CrazyHamSales 2 жыл бұрын
I've been using FRAM for 30 years on everything, they are the most available locally, and never had an issue with them or any vehicle i have run them on. I will say i don't like the Orange FRAM's, the Silver ones are only a couple bucks more, the Tough Guard, and i have cut them open and they have different filter media and a silicone drainback valve, the Extra Guard has a rubber one. The Ultra Synthetic filters are even better, they have a lot more filter media, but i can never find them in stock locally for my vehicles. Lately even the Extra and Tough Guard versions have been harder to get, supply chain issues like everyone else. Anyway, here is a good read on the grade comparisons, i have seen some good KZbin videos on it as well. focusoilfilter.com/fram-oil-filters-comparison/ I know they get a bad rap, but locally i have two choices, Fram from three stores, or go to an Auto Parts store which is wildly overpriced, they sell FRAM also but $3-4 over the price at the local farm supply stores or Wal-Mart. I have no issues with Napa, Wix, etc.. It's just a lot more money locally for me what i feel is not worth the cost. I pay an average of $7 for a Tough Guard for my vehicle locally, from the Napa or O'Reilly's i have locally their cheapest filter runs $16.

In Arizona, there are communities (retirement, maybe) where golf carts are standard transportation, so this car would be a nice ride there. Obviously it's just local driving. The family car is in the garage or carport when the golf cart is driven.

Great Video! Thanks for helping your friend/neighbor! When the oil light came on, then maybe the engine overheated and #3 cylinder would have been the hottest (furthest from water pump) so maybe the heat took the temper out of the #3 rings? Or as you said maybe bad mfg on the metal rings! Liked!! Subbed long ago!
@sixtyfiveford
@sixtyfiveford 2 жыл бұрын
I'm thinking the #3 was the last on the oiling circuit and every time the oil light cam on it was getting starved the most. There's a little squirter that's squirts oil onto the bottom of each piston, so #3 just wasn't getting oil and overheating.

John Deere is a pain in the butt to order parts for, especially all the stuff they don't build in house. I did call them and they will only sell a complete engine for I think 5 grand and have no idea when it would come in. Funny thing is I can just buy a complete engine direct from the source for around 3grand. John Deere really knows how to gouge.

Hey i wondered if you could do that in a little midengine kind of way because I have a 99 Saturn that still runs great but, it sits too low to get in and out of yet as a kind of sis by side itd be repurposed and fun again. As it is I kinda think that one would be lots of fun. Only thing is that I'm sure neither are like a positrack coming out of the trans are they ? if not the power would just go between the front and back dependindig on the conditions ! Thanks for sharing !

They welded or locked the left/right outputs so they both spin the same. 4x4 could simply be disengaged at the front axle or even hubs of the front axle.

My biggest concern with it is the one wheel peel trans being used as a transfer case. I did notice 2 levers by the shifter that said lock which makes me wonder if that's just manual lockers for the diffs but I can't help but wonder if there's a locker in the trans
@sixtyfiveford
@sixtyfiveford 2 жыл бұрын
They welded or locked the left/right outputs so they both spin the same. The front driveline spins all the time and 4x4 is engaged with the front differential. The lock levers are the lockers from the front and rear so you could have a true 4 wheel peel.
