I appreciated the honest statement at the end by the boat's owner. Fun while it lasted.

I grew up in a waterfront town in the Pacific Northwest and lived only steps from the river front where tugs worked towing logs to the local pulp and paper mill. I could hear them going past my parents home and then hear the horn signals to open up the bridges so they could pass underneath. That sound reminds me of misty wet mornings with my window open looking out at the river. Thanks, from Hoquiam. Washington, USA.

Wow, this brings back a few memories. As a teenager in the early fifties (1950-54) I would spend my summer working, helping out in my Grandmother's store "De Firma Monster" in Vreeswijk across the river from Vianen, where the Assistent is based. The business also operated too small tankers, they would sell diesel fuel to some of the boats going by. The smaller one was called "Oliebootje 1" and it operated on the Lekkanaal. The larger one "Oliebootje 2" operated on the Lek river. Those days on the water were a blast. It was also my first Full-Time job. It paid "Een kwartje" (25c)per week. Possibly Mr. Scholten and Mr. Hendriks remember the "Oliebootjes". I absolutely love all these stories, Thank You.

Bijzonder verhaal. Stukje cultureel erfgoed.

A beautiful old tug....I could not tell if she is built of iron or not as I could not see any rivets. I worked on the Wedell Foss for a bit in San Francisco Bay, she was built of riveted iron in 1904, and still in very good shape though repowered to diesel from steam after WWII. Nothing like an old slow turning engine. -Veteran '66-68

I'm intrigued by these type engines and have a few question. Is the initial start of the engine accomplished by compressed air or a starter motor? If compressed air where does it originate?
@1911olympic3 жыл бұрын
Most of these ships have air-compressors that feed large air-tanks. With the air in those tanks, the engine is started.

That stork engine needs removing and refitting with something like a MAN 6cylinder turbo diesel, around 600hp..
@kobuszijlstra53873 жыл бұрын
Nope
@Draxindustries13 жыл бұрын
A new 600-1000hp MAN or B&m would be turn key useable and provide the sort of power a tug needs. That Stork engine, although likely reliable wouldn't pull the skin off a rice pudding even though driving a 1 metre prop. The Stork was probably OK in its day but now out dated and very low powered. An update like this would provide an income as the boat would then become a useful workhorse
