One of my vehicles started making a rather disturbing sound so I went to investigate and to hopefully fix it.

My 1993 Dodge Dynasty has been making the same noise for 2.5 years--after I had a broken belt replaced. The friend that first tried to install the new belt broke the alternator instead. The mechanic that fixed the alternator and put the belt on told me the noise wasnt a big deal. Another mechanic said this meant the engine was failing so I should buy another car (he just happened to be selling one). Now I might simply get a new belt and put it on myself. Thank you for posting this video!

Thanks for a great video! I have been hauling around a replacement drive belt in my 1988 Park Avenue for about a month thinking it was going to be a big project. You made it look so easy I think I can do this without a big problem. You even give the socket size! I had a hard time finding this info with my alldata online manual. Thanks.
@knurlgnar2410 жыл бұрын
On later 3800 engines GM put an engine support in the way and you have to remove the support using an inverted torx socket - what a pain. But on these engines it's really simple.

My friend, great info video! But please open the garage door next time or connect an exhaust discharge hose out the door! Anyways, keep up the good work! Yes, mechanics use a long screwdriver to pinpoint where noise is coming from the old fashion way. Few old timer tips: First, and foremost, try flushing your engine oil with adding 8oz of any kerosene to the oil and drive car for 10-20mil keep under 4k RPM, this brakes down the hard to get to oil sludge deposits in the tiny upper engine passage-ways, you'll know its working if you see your oil dipstick color change from black oil to a lighter brighter color. Then just drain your old oil. You will not do any harm to your engine, that's how marine engines oil sludge is broken down & cleaned from the inside. I have done this on all my & friends cars in the past 10years. Sometimes I also take my clean powerful contractors vac and reverse the suction direction and blow air pressure on top of engine oil cap, this way more dirty oil deposits get pushed out thru the drain. Next, add new synthetic oil with "Blue Devil" rear main seal, that will seal up and tighten your oil pressure and expand the critical engine rubber seals. you can also add "Lucas Oil" sealer or "MMO" Marvel to help tighten any oil leaks. Second, while engine running at 2500rpm, spray carb cleaner in your vacuum line to clean upper intake, injectors and combustion chamber. Next, drain a quart of Trans.oil, then start and warm up the car, let it run and add 1qrt "Lucas oil Trans seal" (domestic engines only, Buick is perfect) keep running the engine and now shift gears slowly one at a time holding in each position 1min, R-reverse, O-overdrive, 4th, 3rd, 2nd, Low. To top it off put a bottle of "Rich-Fuel" complete fuel line system cleaner to the gas tank to eliminate moisture, bad Ethanol, carbon deposits and 50 other great things this product does to your cars. Professional mechanics do these easy steps to get the most miles and most power, many used car dealers mechanics do this as a 125pt maintenance service. Hope this helps. Keep making videos!

Master mechanic here. You took the same route I would have taken from the start. Sounds here and there are best analyzed by usially taking those serpentine belts off and just checking all the pulleys. I found sound on my F150 2002 ford recently that was a loud whistle that others with this same ford engine had at startup. It was something funny actually I discovered, in spite of videos on Ytube of guys saying it was manifold leaks when in reality it was the breather screw on cap for the power steering pump. When those engines first start the pump reservoir has to suck in some air as the fluid pulld downward and if it gets clogged on top it whistles loud LOL. Theres a little breather button in the middle of the PS cap on these particular ford engines

Hi! I watched your video and I thought I should ask for your opinion.I have a 2000 Dodge Durango, V8 5.9L engine. It makes the same noise as yours but it's not the belt (I had that and water pump changed as they were making a squeaking noise). When I accelerate, the noise gets louder and becomes a clucking noise (it feels like that when your chain on the bike falls off, you continue paddling but the bike is not going faster). The car shop guys told me it's an internal engine problem and I should change the engine as it could cost me more to fix it. What do your think?

Yeah, after I made this video I educated myself a little more about serpentine belts, their construction, design, etc, and I will likely never again purchase a neoprene belt! Soon after this video I did get a nice quiet one so I didn't have to put up with the 'turbo whine' from that spare POS belt. The Tiger Claw surprised me - it's pretty good for the price point. I think the Cobra will work well for you too though.

... this was the last year of the iron intake 3.8 V6, after that Buick went to a plastic manifold and head gasket problems became the issue (this iron intake version, the 1991, also had multi-point fuel injection, it's probably the best engine ever made for reliable & most durable performance with very good efficiency).

An old boy I used to know who was a wizard with engines would take a long screwdriver, put the handle to his ear and press the tip on various parts on the engine to eliminate where noises like this were coming from (Kinda like a Doc's stethoscope) and track them down. I tried it and you can hear perfectly where the noises are coming from and just as importantly where they are NOT coming from. Incidentally, that belt looked like it had melted when the engine was stationary. Hard to tell on film but was that the case and if so, did you track down why?
@knurlgnar249 жыл бұрын
The belt 'chunked' and did not cause any heat issues. Part of the neoprene rubber multi-v feature broke loose from the backing and this lack of interface material clunked every time it passed over a small diameter pulley.

Someone probably dropped a socket or something onto your belt and damaged it when the object got pulled through a pulley. Just curious, did you recently have any work done to it? if not im thinking road debris.
@philipreich70359 жыл бұрын
First off, I like watching your creative tinkering and re-use of stuff. I try to do the same. You, like me, seem to like to squeeze everything you can out of your hard-earned dollars. Since you bought the belt that failed at a local auto parts place, you might find they will replace it for free.... Most of the national chains (and some brands) offer a lifetime warranty on their belts -- it's a gimmick that doesn't actually cost them much because you need the receipt, and you need to be the original purchaser, and most folks either don't keep their receipts or don't keep their cars that long. If you keep your maintenance receipts filed -- you might be in luck... I know you re-used the original belt back on the car, but this way you would have another "backup" for when that belt fails or gets noisy.
@netmatrix759 жыл бұрын
Immediately i could tell its the belt problem. Because the pulse delay sound does not indicate whats inside the engine which is usually way much faster.
@theshovster85058 жыл бұрын
My first suggestion would be OPEN your garage door before you start your car!!, unless of course, you can't bear the fact that your car ticks and just want to end it all!, but seriously open your garage door if your going to run your car for any length of time
@m4d_mark_xtr3me796 жыл бұрын
The reason why that belt sounds bad is the direction of the "ribs". Should run parallel with the pullys and idlers... That belt was meant for pulleys with teeth as well as running wheels/ flanges

You have the fuel injector noises, with some slapping & clunking. I had some chattering & squealing. It was a belt tensioner, and idler pulley. ($65), and really easy to fix. That belt is way past "throw it away" stage, even without the missing chunk. Replace the idler pulley and tensioner for GP. Those two items have the worst bearings out of everything, except maybe the water pump, if you are using really bad tap water in the system. I buy distilled water, rather than us Salt River (Phoenix) water. Arkansas River water, Lake Meade water, & most Colorado River water, Las Vegas water are all horrible mineral laden ilky bilge water. Keep that stuff out of your car, and if you have a Hydronic heating system or a steam boiler, buy a water softener, or treat the water in those closed systems. That nasty tap water rips the zinc out of the metal fittings, and destroys stuff. 89 cents a gallon at Walmart.
