Engineer Bill

It was such a privilege to have Bill Stulla as our friend. Known to hundreds of thousands of Southern California children as "Engineer Bill," he hosted "Cartoon Express" (although everyone called the show "Engineer Bill") on KHJ-TV, Channel 9 in Los Angeles from 1954 to 1966. A truly wonderful man who loved allchildren and wanted to do good for them. He won 2 Emmys for his program and was honored by many organizations throughout the years. Here you'll see a kineoscope of his show, corrected through today's technology, to re-live fond memories of a simpler time. The cartoons and filmed commercials were not captured on this kineoscope, but the essence of the program is there: Red Light/Green Light, Casey's Mail Bag, the Bad Habit/Little Mo, Fweight Twain Wayne, Gumby, and all the rest, as broadcast on February 1, 1960. We did call it the Engineer Bill show!! I was on his show in 1958, the hula hoop was a new fad, and my mom closed the show doing the hula hoop! I sure wish I could see a clip of that show!!

OMG I'm old. Casey Ivers was a year older than I was when this was broadcast; she'd be 67 now. Oy. I'm speculating that this little girl was an heir to the Ivers chain of department stores in the area in the 60s.

Used to watch EB. Great guy. Won some army men on his show. Sometimes the kids spilled milk on the layout.

I saw Engineer Bill later on in years at an Albertson's market opening with his calliope machine (you pull a lever and IF it made a certain sound, you won a prize). He wasn't too happy to be there...I guess the years caught up with him.

It was called "Big Whistle" and was invented by a man out in the Palm Springs area.

I had the good fortune of being on his show in `1958 and I spilled my milk a little bit while playing red light, green light, cuz I was sooooo nervous, well the highlight of the evening was at the end of the show, I was suppose to close it doing the hula hoop, the big fad of the times, instead at the last minute, dear Engineer Bill suggested that my mom do it instead!! needless to say, I was quite disappointed....my mom's dress was much more "form fitted" than mine!! LOL (He shut me up with a handful of Oscar Meyer Weiner Whistles!!)

Ditto I was on this show for 4th or 5th birthday. I remember he asked me question about where I lived. He said "Son where do you live?" I answered Lennox. And he asked where is that? I answered Next to BBQ Pete.
