Mike Day Concrete (Everything About Concrete)

In this video, we'll discuss an engineer's specifications for pouring concrete, including the use of rebar, wire mesh, and fiber mesh in different areas. Whether you're pouring a concrete floor or constructing a garage, understanding these requirements will ensure a strong and durable final product. Find out how to properly prepare and reinforce your concrete in this informative video!
#EverythingAboutConcrete #MikeDayConcrete #engineerspecrebar
We're pouring in 4 different areas for this job today. The engineer spec'd different reinforcement for each area.
The house floor has 6 mil poly and fiber mesh in the concrete. The garage floor has 2" styrofoam, 6 mil poly, and a mat of rebar in the floor. The tiny garage area has 2" styrofoam, 6 mil poly, and wire mesh in the floor. All different types of reinforcement on the same pour.
Do you think the engineer's specifications make sense on this house and garage floor pours?
What would you have done differently, if anything?
The garage floor was also 6 inches thick VS 4 inches thick for the house and tiny garage.
Comment with your thoughts.

Mike, my hats off to you and your crew, I am not a expert, but been around many pours, I worked in excavation for years. I never saw a leaf blower on any jobs before. I thought I needed a leaf blower, and have never used it for leaves, just blowing off equipment. Good comments as the pour is being done. Shear panic for me if I had to do that big of job.

My guess on the various slab specs is that the engineer created "Zones" and set the specs with computer design software based on the anticipated loads in each area. You should get used to this approach as it optimizes materials and labour. There is no logical reason that every area has to be the same spec. You may not notice big savings on an individual house, but on a large building or a whole subdivision, the savings from this approach can quickly add up. I am subscribed!

FYI....I would be telling you to use a power blower to blast the rainwater OFF the plastic!!! It would be photo'd and documented in the report...it you did it or NOT....can create future issues with leaving puddled water under concrete you placed on the slab.....messes with the slump/cure rate and reduces both compressive and tensile strength of slab. A little won't....that is WHY ....BLOW OFF the EXCESS PUDDLE WATER!!!!

I guessed 50 yards when I seen you start pouring the garage floor. Did this for a lot of years starting in 1970 for my dad in San Diego. Army moved me to Washington State. Got out of the Army in 76 and started pouring concrete again. Here we had to pour 1000 sq ft per man pouring slabs like this.. We were paid $5 an hour. House payment was $190 a month. Good life with wife working and making almost $4 an hour. Remember one slab the guy I worked for bid it at ten cents a square foot labor. We never made enough $ to save for retirement or medical insurance. Lucky I was never in the Dr office or sick.

Get used to foam. The newer building codes are requiring insulated floors, including slabs on grade. And if there is any radon in the county, they are starting to require the poly sheeting as a radon barrier. The variance between jurisdictions is because every town and county gets to modify the code as they adopt it. And the new codes publish every three years, but many jurisdictions, don’t adopt the new code for five or six years, after they are published. Where I am, the city and county are just moving to the 2018, in July. The state, who does electrical and mechanical is on 2021. Im designing for the 2021, and studying the 2024.
