When I built my garage here in Maine I went to the Code Enforcement guy, told him I wanted to build a 24x24 garage. He said ‘give me $50 and we’ll give you a permit for up to 30x40. Call me when you’re ready to pour and I’ll come out.” Called him back 3 times to come inspect… he never showed… went ahead and poured and built. After 11 years he stilled hasn’t showed up!

It’s been my experience in the public works construction arena county city level whatever it may be inspectors are typically failed contractors. That’s a fact.

In our area, any concrete under a wall must be below the frost line. The frost line here at about the same latitude as Maine is 3 feet deep. The rest of the slab is typically 4 inches. Agreed that the foam under the slab is a waste. The engineering I have used requires foam for 2 feet around the perimeter if it is a heated building. The ground more than 2 feet in from the edge virtually never freezes. People with heated floors put insulation under the entire shop. That makes sense to me because the ambient temperature is about 50 degrees, and they don't want to waste energy heating the earth.

“Uniform building code” and discretionary code enforcement. When we talk about reducing government bureaucracy it starts locally. Having a different code guy every 5-8 miles apart, along with all the other government functions is ridiculous and the only argument I have heard for it is “local control”. We need a county based system!

Mike, For your fiber mesh, are you using monofilament or fibrillated micro fibers?

Im in Massachusetts some towns don't allow Alaskan slabs like that. They want 4' of frost coverage. Either way we can dig it and do Alaskan or conventional easy either way. I have had some negative experiences with customer setting it up. If it needs lots more bracing I'm not going to fix it for free.

Code in our area is 18" for a floating slab like that, zone 5/6. Agree over kill for slab edge.

Plumbing doesn’t mean it’s going to be heated space. Most garages or shops have water and many have a lav.

Inspectors can be a weird bunch. The old thought about inspectors is they’re typically failed contractors, now intent on proving to everyone else how impossible construction is, so that’s why they failed. There are many that don’t fit that stereotype though and are just regular people doing a job. If they’re asking you to do something above and beyond that doesn’t really cost you anything, just bite your tongue and do it. Pick your battles. If they ask for something that does have a financial cost, you have the right to know why. If you’re just flat out being extorted, contact their boss and report them. The industry doesn’t need those types and it’s your responsibility to help get rid of them. Enough complaints and they’ll be gone.

I'm getting ready to poor a 12x36 slab how much concrete do I need
@psidvicious7 күн бұрын
4” thick - 5.5 yards 6” thick - 8 yards. That doesn’t account for any perimeter footing, thickened edge or waste. That’s just a flat slab assuming the grade is perfect. Length x width x thickness ÷ 27 = cubic yards.

@LovelyBowling-hs4sy I don't want to be unkind, but if you don't know that, be aware there is plenty more you don't know. I admire people willing to do hard things and do it themselves; but seriously, see if you can find a buddy who has plenty of experience to help. Good luck!

I think code enforcement protects people that dont know anything about concrete slabs from people that do bad work and charge a lot for it. I was charged a lot more than you guys charge for a driveway and wish the code guy did more to ensure it wouldnt crack and break apart. Because it has already turned to crap.

Hi Mike :) I sent you an email, but it might end up in your spam folder. I have a few questions regarding concrete driveways and training. I'm writing from Poland-we have a company specializing in garden construction.
