I found tent guy rope tensioners and bamboo kebab skewers for the pins works the best for me. Strong too had 25 pound pike on them and worked fine.

Did you test the new thinner model of the hinge, instead of just the thicker practice one you had? Seems like to be that with more material it would be less prone to break, less material more prone
