As an engineer, you should love wedges. They are a basic machine in physics (the incline plane) and they let you shim up wobbly tables. Let's see if your architecture can do that.

Airplane knowledge: The flappy things on the ends of airplane wings are the ailerons, and they're used to bank (Also known as turning). The tiny wings on the rear are called the horizontal stabilizers, and the flappy bits (elevators) on them are used for moving the nose up and down (Climbing and descending). The vertical stabilizer have a flappy bit called a rudder, and it's used to move the nose left and right. HOWEVER, turning left and right is done by the ailerons on the wings in a banking move.

In some planes (like the PA28 I'm learning to fly on) the horizontal stabilizers and the elevators are put together in what is known as a "horizontal stabilator". You also left out the secondary flappy wing bits known as the "flaps" which are used to increase lift allowing you to fly slower without stalling. Some planes actually combine flaps and ailerons into "flaperons". Just a little bit more airplane knowledge for you :P

For the tail rotors you want it to spin to apply force in the opposite direction that the main rotors turn the body of the helicopter. This way you have a way to turn right by just letting the force of the rotors spinning turn you that way, and a way to turn left by spinning up the tail rotor to apply force against the spinning of the body and turn you the opposite direction
@ReatuKrentor
@ReatuKrentor 2 жыл бұрын
Perhaps it would be easier to use 2 rotors spinning in opposite direction like a Chinook or maybe like an Osprey and be able to rotate them for forward thrust.
@TheJerseyNinja
@TheJerseyNinja 2 жыл бұрын
@@ReatuKrentor I mean it certainly wouldn’t be easier than just putting the tail rotor facing the correct side for proper turning. The issue is i don’t know if this game has the logic to make a dual rotor system like that work because in those, when they want to turn while hovering one of the rotors slows down so the force is greater in the direction they want to turn. I don’t know if this game has that kind of programmability. Though just using the tail rotor to turn and keep it straight would be difficult as well as you’d have to program the speed of it to apply the correct amount of balancing force to keep it straight when hovering as well as when spinning the main rotor up faster to move forward as that applies more force and so the tail rotor would need to also apply equal force to keep it straight. As well as some other complexities. Though since they have helicopters as a thing in this game, I’m sure they have some kind of logic and their physics ignores some certain things to allow it to be done and actually work
@TheJerseyNinja

Sorry, I was thinking of a different helicopter. The chinook turns by angling the blades in opposite directions to turn. Which I guess could work in this game, assuming you can program how far the hinges move and assign the directions properly

Planes control surfaces are as follows: Pitch (up down) goes on the tail, yaw (NOT how you turn, rather how you stabilize a turn) is the vertical stabilizer, and only roll goes on the wingtips. Putting pitch on the wings is pointless because thats right on the COM (or should be, not sure if it is with yours). Thrust preferably should be in line with the COM horizontally, and don’t bother with flaps as the aero in this game isn’t advanced enough to implement those right.

helicopter blades actually change their attack angle constantly during each revolution. it's about the only feasible way to make the prop disc actually tilt over the craft. So to tilt right, you make the blade have a higher AoA (and therefore lift) on the left, and lower (or even negative) AoA on the right. To tilt forward you go lower in front and higher in back. Making that particular mechanism in Trailmakers might be a bit of a stretch though. You'd probably be better off taking that extra hinge out and putting a second tail prop on, turned 90 degrees so it pushes the tail up and down.

The heli wants to turn the way the main blades are turning, thats why you need the rotor in the back, you can make a rotor above the main one moving in the oposite direction to cancel them out and put a horisontal blade in the back to make you move forward. when you start moving you can use a vertical rudder (stabilazor) to point were you want to go. Trust me, im an aircraft technician

hay mat, when you get hover pads you can hover off the ground. but (if it still works) you can also flip the hover pad upside down so it is facing upwards. then place a vehicle part "above" the hover pad, maybe with an air gap between it, the hover pad kind of "pushes" your car down to the ground and lets you stick to walls/ climb vertically, could come in handy at some point the hover wall climber also kind of flys in a glitchy way, gets a kind of floaty effect. it's weird you might want to mess around with it in creative first

So this is actually a thing, in the 50s they designed and even tested a helicopter with peroxide-fueled rocket engines on the ends of the blades (pressure-fed from the centripetal force of the rotating blade) for the purpose of making expedient take-offs and other maneuvers. Gets you a lot more power without any more torque on the main shaft. Worth a search for "rocket on rotor helicopter" sometime.

interestingly enough the US military experimented with an air droppable mini helicopter that had rockets on the ends of it's two rotor blades the helicopter didn't see adoption though fort a number of reasons the most critical of which being that the engines messed up the airflow over the blades so much that an autorotation landing wasn't possible.

Hi Matt I've got an idea for your helicopter. If you mount the rotating actuator of the main head onto 2 hinges. The base hinge can tilt the head forwards and backwards the next hinge mounted on top of the base hinge can tilt the head left and right. The idea is to replicate a swash plate for translocational flight. I hope this helped if it does I'll see what else I can think of. Cheers 😀

the easiest way to make a helicopter steer in this game is to simply add rocket propellers directly to a seat (a diving bell works the best) and then you can simply use wasd to tilt the copter because using those keys moves the pilot enough to tilt it also if you get enough wings it will just float no matter how little spinning power it has

I found helicopters easier I suggest using propellers that rotate in opposite directions to reduce the main body rotation. Also to stop completely stop turning constantly you'll have to set up sensors but if you just but the smaller thrusters on the tail for left and right it will help tremendously. Lastly use the propellers for hovering and use thrusters for up and down (alternatively you can glade down if you made it right) and use thrusters on the main body for forward and backwards
