@@Hav0k - I imagine it might be like that on really big ships, yeah, but most of the time it will be a "land and get out to load the thing" deal. You can't reload the A-10 Warthog's gun mid-flight. We already have that with some orgs and missiles and bombs. They'll have their fighter/bombers, and then a logi ship with a cargo hold of ordinance to rearm them landed a little outside the combat zone so the fighters only have to make a short trip rather than all the way back to a base. Imagine that but also with heavy-duty repair guns (mech-mounted?), spare components and ammo crates as well. A smart team with good logi could be in a fight WAY longer than a bunch of hooligans' without support.

This x10000 would love to pass the time in QT doing ship maint. Patching holes, fixing items. Also gives crew something to do between combat. The idea you should be able to solo multi crew ships is the problem not this. There are plenty of low/single crew ships out there. I've personally have been rearranging my fleet to better support low/no crew gameplay when I'm by myself and leveraging my orgs larger or capitol class ships. I think the main concern with engineering for myself has less to do with engineering and more so to do with the fact that through virtue of mission payouts being split between party members solo play drastically outpaces in most game loops you can do with a group. I imagine its going to be just as hard to get other players to crew aboard your ship as it is now in most instances. I think a payout system for missions should consist of giving lets say 4 party members the same pay for basic tier missions and only if they're over the recommended party size only then do they take a major hit to rep and credits for mission time. If the mission is hard enough to justify that recommended party size being upped they can do that on a case by case basis. adding one additional person to a party doesn't double your mission speed, adding 4 doesn't quarter it. Realistically If you just bump mission payouts to enable co-op play you'd still have the problem that solo is still the best way to go hands down. Credit rewards for completing missions relative to their difficulty is always going to have a soft cap on it to prevent overtly expeditious grind. Having a system akin to what i've proposed allows for a more reasonable truncation of rewards in such a way that still allows them to be rewarding. I personally think engineering gameplay is super essential however for even a modest sized ship like the corsair even modest damage to your ship can cost you 100's of thousands of credits. Couple that with the fact that the cost of repair can be so high you may just not ever use a multicrew ship for 90% of the games content. You can quickly run into the red while crewing a ship like the corsair.
@Brosion992 ай бұрын
if i interpret CIG correctly engineering and other mechanics like personal health are supposed to be balanced in a way that they dont end up being a tedious job you have to do nonstop to survive, but rather a way to extend your life in the verse as without those mechanics your character/ship would die much sooner. Meaning theyre not supposed to be gameloops to keep you occupied, but rather gameloops to extend your gameplay without the need to resapwn, making death of a spaceman more viable in a complex game like this. I could be wrong and its probably also intended as a balancing pass for small and large ships/ solo crews and multi crews alike, but i think their main goal is to make dieing less common without making the game/ hits you need to take to go down unrealistic.

Star Citizen needs little time sinks for when traveling through quantum space: Similar to how Sea of Thieves have little time sinks while sailing (steering the ship, adjusting the mast, etc.) This is especially important for space trucking. Unlike in real trucking or trucking sims, there is no road to follow and no cars (obstacles) to avoid. Not to mention there's no unique vistas to gawk at, and no atmospherics to chill to; it's all just space + the quantum travel effects the entire way through. Space trucking, by its nature, has way less gameplay and visuals than normal trucking. So Star Citizen has to fill the void somehow. Otherwise, cargo hauling will be less about being a space trucker and is instead going to be more about being a hangar box mover. Engineering gameplay could be a big step towards this direction. Adding gameplay to the space travel part of the space game.

For some it'll be as easy as landing to refuel / rearm, and repair /replace worn or damaged components. "looks like your shield generator is on its last leg. I got a new grade b industrial that fit, or I have a refurbished grade a military for the same price". Having an org event where after a Jump town, Blockade runner, or Xenothreat event coming in after the battle and offering repairs, and salvaging the left behind wrecks for components, weapons, and salvage. about this being "controversial": While for some this may mean a reconsideration of their larger ships efficiency or even general use (especially combat related), I dont think this will be too controversial, at least not in the margin of other changes. I mean just compare it to Master Modes. MM is a direct violation of the aimed goial of the game, engineering is much more in line with the long term goals and plans for the depth the game should always have. Its the same wit Cargo. In fact, the only "controversy" I see, at least for me is, how can this system make sense and have meaningfull impact when MM basically over-rules and negate any depth component and ship performance could bring to the game? Both systems work against each other and the question remains, wich one will survive into a 1.0 state in a meaningfull way.

im waiting for this for a decade. and it is exactly how i expected a good gamified solution to be. at least for a start. i see a lot of potential here.

Time sink will not be a problem when the game gets to the point of actually doing something meaningful. Right now all the tasks are full of emptiness and a wipe is always around the corner so players are concerned about time sync. However when you fly to a planet to do a set amount of tasks with friends for the afternoon it will feel much more rewarding. I AM worried about the payout of group tasks. I hope that they pay better with more people involved to incentivise group play. I am not sure how they will regulate this tho and build it into the game. It will be a challenge.
@csion8368Ай бұрын
@@afterthought3746 For PVE grouping pays far more. Can be on a multi crew mining or salvage ship producing far more per hour. Also on single crew ships having a friend in another ship running RMC salvage or unstable quantanium back a forth keeps you on task.

I think engineering will be great. The only people it will tick off the most is those that have dropped $500+ on a large/capitol ship that will have a much harder time solo'ing the ship.

This better not be as annoying as having to eat and drink. We should be able to use all components for a while before they break or need repair. If every single time I use my ship a component breaks I’m going to be pissed as hell

Maybe research what Star Citizen was intended to be. It's not going to be a log on grab a mission then log off game.

This is CIG, next you'll have to file a flight plan. Load and fuel the ship yourself. Preform a preflight inspection. Have customs inspect your ship for departure. Wait for clearance to takeoff. Crash into an invisible hangar door. Then take the tram back to the spaceport to do it all over again.

Engineering sounds interesting, but I think CIG just needs to be careful not to make it too extreme. I don't want to spend more time fixing my ship than flying it.

Our org see this as a reason NOT to fly multicrew ships in the future. To do anything you will first have to find and purchase a bunch of spare parts (likely fly around the system to the different shops), then manually move them onto your ship and stow them somewhere taking up valuable space and loads of time. Then if you still have time to play the game, have to deal with random parts getting old whilst we are just trying to fly the ship somewhere... its fast becoming more and more nitche this game, soon there will be such a small potential player base that you will need to pay $100 month subscription to support the game post go live... I used to love the indy side of the game, then came the 'cargo tedium' changes that killed hauling, now with this it will be much easier and more time efficient to just fly around and gank people than doing the more interesting game loops.

Which is game realism always expressed in the negative effects? Do you know how often I have repaired the engine of my car in the three years I own it? Zero times. I paid a mechanic to look it over three or four times. I'd have a serious word with the seller if my car would break down every week unless meticolously maintained all the time.
@Stampede6022 ай бұрын
Once engineering has been applied to all ships it may finally incentivize player groups to fly one multi crew ship instead of several single crew ships. The multi crew ship can be repaired while staying in the fight. While the single seat fighter will become combat ineffective once components start failing.
