Welcome to another episode of Trailmakers! Today I decided to try to make a machine capable of throwing and skipping "rocks" on the water! It only took about ten thousand attempts but eventually, I ended up with a terrible rock skipping robot...

About Trailmakers:
In the toughest motoring expedition in the universe, you and your friends will build your own vehicles to cross a dangerous wasteland. Explore, crash horribly, use your wits to build a better rig, and get as far as you can with whatever spare parts you find on your way.
Welcome to the Ultimate Expedition!
Journey over grueling mountains, hazardous swamps, and bone-dry deserts on a distant world far from civilization - it is just you, your fellow adventurers and the amazing, jet-powered hover-buggy you built yourself. Explore, crash your vehicle, build a better one, and get as far as you can with whatever spare parts you find along your way.
Trailmakers is about building very awesome vehicles and machines, but you don’t need an engineering degree to get started. The intuitive builder will get you going in no time. Everything you build is made from physical building blocks. Each block has unique features like shape, weight and functionality. They can be broken off, refitted and used to build something new. Individually the blocks are fairly simple, but combined the possibilities are endless.
Expedition Mode is the challenging campaign mode of Trailmakers. You are competing in an off-world rally expedition with only a few building blocks to get you started. You must build, tinker with and rebuild your machine to progress. Journey through a big world, overcome deep gorges, angry wildlife and dangerous weather to progress and find new parts that will juice up your machine. The world in Expedition Mode will test your survival skills and ingenuity.
Sandbox Mode is where you want to head for an unrestricted, sandbox, vehicle-building experience. Here you can build anything you can dream of, and play around with it in the world of Trailmakers. It is a great place to test out crazy machines, and experiment with the physics engine. With tons of different blocks, hinges, thrusters and interactive vehicle parts - the skybox is the limit.
Trailmakers is even more fun if you play it with other people. Build cool vehicles and compete in mini-game modes with your friends or other Trailmakers online. Build a helicopter, send it to your friend, and shoot them out of the sky. Put two seats on a tank, and let your friend control the turret. As we get further in Early Access development Expedition Mode will also be adapted to multiplayer.

Trailsmakers's water physic dont have the "speed density effect" (if you go very fast or with a big surface into the water he react like a wall/liquid) and sadly it's what make rock skipping work in real life.

So the real trick to skipping a rock irl is to get the flat to grab and use the surface of the water to make a piled micro ramp and jump/skim via that, to get such and effect it needs usually between like a 20° and 45° angle depending upon the stone used. (Can be bigger or smaller in edge cases), what you are trying for is a rotational skim throw, and without actual water that can go up a rotating object that just simply wont work. Plus it is not a great skipping method on liquids. It does work decently on hard surfaces though. And yes, rotation is a decently large factor in getting truly great skipping. And lol, yup, that is a far better boomerang build, and similar to a version i have had before irl

You will want to add mini thrusters and keep the wings. And the optimal angle of hitting the water is 45° and 12.5° angled down. Also if you get it Moving faster, rotatonaly, you can make it more stable after hitting the water.

Try increasing the power of the launcher, that might help, also try to put a servo on the rock, if it stays active after the launch that should the rock to rotate giving it angular momentum (if it is modeled into the game physics) and thus more stability during flight.

I feel like putting some more attention on the thrower might have helped, particularly with that last rock. Once you got it skipping, it would have been interesting to see if a faster launch (from a longer or faster arm) would have helped it skip better, since it seemed like it was running out of momentum after the first skip.

You should've just put mini thrusters that will still work after you launch it then it should spin like how you really make the rock skip on water in real life. Spinning also helps the rock maintain its balance making it skip on the water. I wish Scrapman sees this comment

5:28 *correction* rocks skip BECAUSE the rock is angled upwards so that is counted as a skip of a stone. so 5 minutes in you already have a successful prototype. now just more skips.
@scrapman
@scrapman 4 жыл бұрын
But the impact with the water wasn't causing it to angle up there, so it wasn't skipping off the water, the water just happened to be in it's already determined path when I pointed it that way. So that didn't count to me if the water wasn't the main cause of bouncing up.

I don't know if you did, but maybe research how rock skipping works and then how the water in this game works before trying something like this xD like il probably eat my own words but the way it works in the game is probably that it just raises each component up that is touching the water and adding drag but in real life, it skips because the rock pushes the water in front of itself and making a "more solid" water ramp that it can use to jump. correct me if I'm wrong xD the reason why the last one looked like it was skipping is that the rock touches the water with its back it raises that part up and trough rotation trough the "core" the front part touches the water making 2 separate points of contact.
